FAYETTEVILLE -- The University of Arkansas will celebrate this week the 100th birthday of former UA President and U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright.
Fulbright, who was born April 9, 1905, died Feb. 9, 1995, in Washington and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fayetteville, his hometown. The UA named the College of Arts and Sciences after him in 1982.
Fulbright served as UA president from 1939 to 1941 prior to representing Arkansas for 30 years in the U.S. Senate. He served for 15 years as chairman of the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee.
He was the only senator to vote against funding Joseph McCarthy's committee to investigate communists, and he introduced legislation that led to the formation of both the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the United Nations.
He is perhaps most remembered, however, for the scholarship program that bears his name. The Fulbright Scholarships, created in 1946 after World War II, intended to increase mutual understanding among nations through the exchange of knowledge and skills.
More than 255,000 scholars have traveled and studied abroad through the program.
This next week is full with events that are part of the yearlong celebration to commemorate the Fulbright Centennial. All of this next week's events, with the exception of the International Student Banquet on April 11, are free.
