ELKINS -- Teachers in the Elkins School District should have an extra $1,000 for Christmas.
Superintendent Robert Allen said the Elkins School Board approved the raise for the current school year at a special meeting Thursday. Support staff will also receive a pay hike of up to $1,000 depending on the length of time they have worked for the district.
The package has a total cost of about $160,000 districtwide, Allen said.
Raises are a mixed bag in other Washington County school districts.
The Springdale School District gave teachers a $1,500 raise for the current school year, raising the starting salary to $39,521 for a new teacher with a bachelor's degree and no experience.
Fayetteville teachers have not received an increase for this school year except for annual step increases given for an additional year of experience or more education. The starting salary for a Fayetteville teacher with a bachelor's degree and no experience remains at $34,420.
Prairie Grove teachers received a $1,000 raise last May that took effect this school year. That boosted the starting salary for a new teacher to $33,000, Superintendent Chris Webb said.
However, teachers in Greenland and West Fork have not received raises this year.
West Fork Superintendent Joey Walters said his district typically waits until later in the school year before raising salaries. The starting salary in West Fork is $31,335.
The raise in Elkins added $1,000 across the board to the salary schedule and boosts the starting salary from $30,000 to $31,000.
Raises for support staff are based on years of experience with the district, starting at $500 for employees with five years or less experience.
Those with five to 15 years experience will receive $750 and those with more than 15 years will get a $1,000 raise.
The school board decided to exclude bus drivers from the new pay plan because salaries are based on short, intermediate or long routes or trips and include an automatic annual increase of 3 percent, Allen said.
The district's Personnel Policy Committees for certified and classified employees have to approve the salary changes before they can take effect.
Allen said he hopes to issue the checks before the start of the holiday break on Dec. 21.
