BENTONVILLE -- New roofs and turf for sports fields are some of the repairs needed in the Bentonville School District after Sunday night's severe weather, officials said.
The district's Tiger Athletic Complex suffered the most storm damage, but extensive roof problems also were discovered at a few schools, Superintendent Gary Compton said Tuesday.
Officials do not have a cost estimate for the repairs and are working with an insurance adjuster, roof specialist and a construction crew.
Joe Haynie, the district's construction manager, briefed the School Board about the storm damage Monday night. Board members approved a resolution that allows the district to do work in excess of $10,000 without seeking competitive bids.
The high school's sports complex is home to the football stadium, multipurpose building and baseball, softball, track and soccer fields. The multipurpose building has a weight room, turf room and office space.
The storm ripped off parts of the multipurpose building's roof and downed two light poles at the stadium. Portions of fences were blown down on the baseball and softball fields, Haynie said.
Haynie recommended replacing artificial turf at the football stadium and inside the multipurpose building. At the stadium, debris from the light poles shattered onto the field.
Haynie said he wasn't certain how long it will take to completely repair the building but said crews are already working to patch the roof. Crews are also working to patch roof damage at some schools.
Compton anticipates the installation of new roofs this summer.
The affected schools are Thomas Jefferson, R.E. Baker and Elm Tree elementary schools, the new elementary school in Centerton, Spring Hill Middle School, Lincoln Junior High School and the district's technology service building north of the junior high school.
The tech center, which is also a preschool site, suffered water damage.
