FAYETTEVILLE -- Ronnie Brewer didn't need a wardrobe change for his suit to match his hat Wednesday night.

Brewer's blue suit went perfectly with the hat of the team that drafted him, as the University of Arkansas junior was picked No. 14 by the Utah Jazz in the first round of the NBA Draft at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

"I'm very excited," Brewer said. "It works out well for me. It's an opportunity to play right now, run the lanes and have a great duo at guard."

Utah drafted a point guard last season in Deron Williams, the No. 3 pick in last year's draft. Williams averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 assists in his rookie season.

Williams finished sixth in voting for the NBA's Rookie of the Year award, receiving the only first-place vote that didn't go to winner Chris Paul.

Brewer, a Fayetteville native, made himself available for the draft April 27, but put off hiring an agent, leaving open the possibility he would return to Arkansas for his senior season.

Little more than a month later, though, Brewer hired CSMG's Hank Thomas as his agent, officially ending his collegiate career.

In three seasons at Arkansas, Brewer averaged 15.7 points per game, good for 16th on the Razorbacks' career scoring list. He also had 216 steals and 299 assists during his three-year career.

As a junior, Brewer was named honorable mention All-America by CollegeHoops.net and was a defensive All-American by CollegeInsider.com in a season where he led Arkansas to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001.

Brewer follows his father, Ron, as one of 11 Arkansas first-round NBA Draft picks. The elder Brewer was the first Razorback selected in the first round when he was picked No. 7 by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1978.

Ron Brewer said his son had a solid career ahead of him if he could keep working to improve.

"I think he will end up being a really good pro out there, but the thing about it is, it's a chore and he's got to make sure he maintains that responsibility," he said in a televised ESPN interview immediately following the selection.

Ron Brewer played eight seasons in the NBA for Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland, Golden State, New Jersey and Chicago. He averaged 11.9 points per game in 501 career games.

The last Arkansas first-rounder was Joe Johnson, who was picked No. 10 by the Boston Celtics in 2001.

The Jazz barely missed the playoffs last season, going 41-41. After making the playoffs for 15 consecutive years beginning in 1989, the Jazz have missed the playoffs three straight seasons.

Utah went into the draft needing a shooting guard and got just that in Brewer. Brewer could also be asked to play some point guard for Utah, backing up Williams.

Brewer looked like he could wind up as Paul's teammate for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, but the Hornets selected UConn's Hilton Armstrong with the No. 12 pick and by the time their second first-round pick rolled around at No. 15, Brewer was off the board.

Many mock drafts had Brewer being selected either by the Hornets at No. 12 or Orlando at No. 11.

"I definitely thought I was going earlier a couple of times," Brewer said. "But all things happen for a reason. I'm very happy to be where I'm at."

The Magic did go with a shooting guard at No. 11, picking Duke's J.J. Redick.

Jazz fans gathered at the Delta Center cheered when the pick was announced, although many expected Redick to drop to Utah.

In Utah, Brewer will play for coach Jerry Sloan. Sloan will enter his 19th season at the helm of the Jazz, needing 16 wins to reach 1,000 career victories.

"I'm really looking forward to it," Brewer said of the chance to play for Sloan. "A lot of people say he's tough on players but I'm willing to do whatever I can to get better."
