FAYETTEVILLE — Fire damaged the roof of the Elkins Elementary School cafeteria Tuesday after workers reroofing the facility left for the day.

The fire was reported to the Elkins Fire Department at 7:32 p.m. and was under control in about 40 minutes, a spokesman said. Firefighters from Round Mountain and Goshen fire departments also responded.

    No injuries were reported.

Washington County Fire Marshal John Jenkins said the blaze appeared to have started under sheet metal roofing being installed. A flame apparently ignited some material under the sheet metal that went undetected.

“It was purely accidental,” Jenkins said. The workers had stayed at the site for two hours after work ended for the day to watch for fire and had left about an hour before the blaze ignited.

The ceiling in the cafeteria also sustained water damage, Jenkins said.

No damage estimate was available Wednesday.

A spokesman for the school district said an insurance adjuster was on the scene Wednesday morning and work had resumed on the building. The roofing contractor told district officials the work would be finished for the start of school Aug. 21.
