Johnson Named Starting QB for Hogs

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ new starting quarterback is actually its old one.

In a move that didn’t come as a surprise, coach Houston Nutt on Wednesday named junior Robert Johnson as the starter over freshman Mitch Mustain and an injured Casey Dick, ending what had been a short-lived quarterback race.

Nutt realizes that his decision to start Johnson in the Sept. 2 season opener against the University of Southern California might be an unpopular one with some Razorbacks fans. But that didn’t impact the coach’s thought process.

Johnson started the first seven games last season, including an embarrassing 70-17 loss at USC on Sept. 17. He went 2-5 as the starter before getting replaced over the final four games by Dick, who went 2-2 in that span.

“Robert Johnson, right now, (is) a little older,” Nutt said Wednesday night. “I think he’s much better than he was a year ago.”

Nutt said Johnson has shown over the first two weeks of preseason practices that he’s making better decisions than he did a year ago when he struggled to move the offense.

That improved decision-making, plus Johnson’s overall experience and close relationship with quarterbacks coach Alex Wood, helped the junior reclaim the starting job.

“I’m more comfortable, and I feel more experienced (than a year ago),” said Johnson, who completed 89-of-158 passes for 876 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions in eight games last season. “And (I) have confidence in myself, so that helps out a lot.”

With Dick still unable to practice because of a nagging back injury, Mustain will serve as Johnson’s backup when Arkansas opens the season against USC at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Redshirt freshman Clark Irwin, who was not considered to even be in the mix when preseason practices opened earlier this month, will work as the No. 3 quarterback.

Mustain, the former Springdale High star, had impressed coaches with his maturity and composure, as well as his ability to make throws in practice. But the freshman wasn’t surprised with the news that Johnson had been named the starter.

“That’s something to be expected. He had a great fall, and I still have a lot to learn,” Mustain said. “I support him, and I think the entire team does.”

After signing with Arkansas in February, Mustain had talked about wanting to redshirt his freshman season if he wasn’t named the starting quarterback. But he said he’ll leave that decision up to the coaches.

“It’s not my decision, honestly,” Mustain. “I guess if Robert goes through and works out and ends up playing the entire year, I guess that (taking a redshirt) is what will happen to me.”

Dick was considered the favorite to open the season as the starter. He ended the spring as Arkansas’ No. 1 quarterback, but he has missed most of the last two weeks of practice because of a back injury that has been slow to heal.

“All I know is that Casey Dick cannot be ready by the first game. I know that, and so you have to go forward,” Nutt said. “I think it was the right and proper time to let our team know who the first-team quarterback is.”

" I hope every thing works out for ROJO, and I think he should get a fair look. The problem I have is why would you leave a guy out there who struggles under pressure. If he doesn't preform early, you have to make a switch. I still hope he does well, but you have to give your team the best chance to win. If that chance is with ROJO fine, but if not make the switch. "

" Rojo my fanny. This guy can look as good as he wants in practice. When the game fires up if he looks like the same bone head we saw last year pull him.....Honestly I think I'm selling my tickets...I simply do not want to see us lose the game because according to coach nutt he is a little bit " older" . Well guess what every year those two quarterbacks are both alive he will always be a little older....Play someone that knows how to win. "

" I'm tired of everyone being so negative towards RoJo and coach Nutt's decision to start him. I understand that he made some decisions last year that werent the smartest, but he does work hard in practice and deserves a second chance. Football is a team sport, and i believe that a lot of what happened last year can be accredited to the entire team ant not just Johnson. Nevertheless, I do believe that if Robert makes similar mistakes he should be pulled early. You never know this new offense could be a perfect fit for Mr. Johnson. "

" I support your decision Mr. Nutt. That is why you are the coacha and the rest of us are ARM CHAIR coaches. I believe that if you put your best 11 on the field at the time then youdon't have to second guess any decisions that you make. If you start making decisions based on the media then it is time to get out of coaching. "

" Let's give Mitch some time to adjust, not throw him out there to sink or swim with the rest of the state on his back. He will have his time, in the mean-time, let's support Coach Nutt's decision. He is going to make the best decision based upon the facts before him, afterall, his job is on the line. "

" First off, Nutt's job is not on the line. As long as Broyles is the athletic director Nutt will be the head coach. Secondly I don't agree with anyone who agrees with starting "RoJo". The kid makes dumb decisions sure, but he is also a pansy and doesn't know how to take a hit/wants to take one. I know that no one wants to take a hit, but you are in football, learn already. All I have to say is I would take a hurt Casey Dick over a healthy Robert Johnson. I also don't want Mitch Mustain out there, b/c you know the Trojans will see that as an opportunity to destroy all of Arkansas's hopes and dreams that we put into an amazing freshman. So, basically we are up the creek either way. Go Hogs........ "

" I dissagree with nutts decision to start ROJO. This quarterback is not ready for the responsibilitys to be a captain of this offense. We have a very strong team...sure we lost 2 USC but with 2 fumbles in the first half from a backup running back... "
