    SPRINGDALE -- Time out!

The Springdale City Council delayed the vote on the proposed lease agreement between the city and the Wichita Wranglers Tuesday night.

Council members planned to send proposed revisions to the Wranglers to see if they would agree to the changes.

The stadium is scheduled for completion in time for the 2008 season, with the team $325,000 per year lease the facility.

The delay on the contract came after numerous questions arose about the contract. The major obstacle, the possibility the stadium would not be tax exempt, fell after Lee Ann Kizzar, Washington County assessor, agreed the proposed uses of the stadium would fall in line with tax exemptions listed in the Arkansas Constitution.

The city plans to build the stadium on the southeast corner of the intersection of Watkins Avenue and 56th Street. The 40-acre lot is under contract for sale at $4 million.

The facility would be built with $50 million from a bond sale approved in a July election by 13 votes. The funds would cover the land purchase, building a stadium for $33 million, extending sewer and water lines to the site, improving roads and paying the cost of the bond issue. The bonds are scheduled to be paid off by the extension of a 1 percent sales tax.

" Well this sounds like pretty good news for those of us who want the Wranglers in SPringdale. Wonder why this article didn't clearly specify the major obsticles to agreeing on the contract??? This gives Overton more time to figure out a way to slap down the people... "

" Well here we go again I wonder how much tax will realy be needed to operate this stadium. If you folks think there will be enough people go to pay the bills think again just look at Razorback stadium it is not paying it's own way. Sometimes it is not even half full. "OH" thats OK the pore old tax payer will make up the shortage what a great deal. "

" Every game I've been to in Razorback Stadium has been at least half full, most significantly more than half. "

" A simple google search will uncover that Rich Baseball has owned at least one minor league team since 1982 and they currently own 3 teams so if that is not stable ownership I don't know what is. It is interesting that I have yet to hear the council ask for any public input other than our vote since it is our money they are spending which they repeatedly remind us. I do hope they understand the urgency in getting this done so the construction can begin as it would be unexcusable to have cost overruns because of a rush job to meet the 2008 season opening deadline. The Texas League season ends in September unlike Major League Baseball. The Mayor probably should have taken a couple council members to Buffao for the lease talks, would have been interesting to see how tough some of them talk when it's nuts and bolts time. Also, if Mr. Dotson thinks Springdale is the team's only option he's fooling himself. Just like Sam's Club, the Wranglers could well end up in another town in Northwest Arkansas and not Springdale. If there is no lease then what is the point of building a stadium? "

" With respect to Billy Bobs' comments regarding alderman Mike Overton, it would seem to me that Mr. Overton is doing exactly what he should be doing. He is asking tough questions that must be asked. He was elected to look out for our citys' wellbeing and fiscal viability is a very legitimate concern. Most everyone WANTS baseball to come to Springdale, but not everyone is willing to sign a blank check to make it happen. Most of us WANT a shiny new red Corvette, but I'm not about to sign a contract until I read the fine print. Since Mike Overton is one of those people elected to read the fine print, let him do his work. Just my humble opinion, Dean "

" The Rich family will walk away very soon if they haven't already. I'm embarrassed for the council and our city. This is a watershed event and if the council will pass the lease with only small changes (some of which are good), they will then be flooded with approval requests for tens of millions of dollars of surrounding new development. Just ask Frisco, Tx., Oklahoma City, Springfield, Mo., and numerous other cities who host a team. 8 council members can't each negotiate something they've never negotiated before. They must trust the mayor and city attorney's tireless great work and document. Being greedy, trying to be cute, trying to posture for future mayor campaign, ect. all unfortunately means the end is near. This team will pull out and not look back. Get positive within the next 72 hours or Springdale will forever be a laughing stock in NWA and we'll all be driving to Benton County to attend a game. "

" Why can't we just go to an independent team and have them pay for the stadium. Leave the Wranglers back in Wichita and stop wasting our tax dollars!!! "

" Ted- Your comment is ridiculous. No team is going to pay for a new stadium 100%, affiliated or otherwise. Also, independant baseball is NO WHERE NEAR the caliber of ball you will be getting with a Texas League team. Old washed up has beens and never were's or young future Major League ballplayers. That is the difference. "

" If a team really wants to come to your area they will help pay for the stadium. Example, Greenville Drive, in Greenville, SC. An affilate of the Boston Red Sox paid for a new stadium in the downtown area and it was just voted the best new stadium in baseball, beating out the new stadium in St. Louis. It was also completed in under a year. "
