AUBURN, Ala. -- Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, on his way to celebrating the Razorbacks' 27-10 victory over No. 2 Auburn with the UA fans on Saturday, explained how his defense had held the Tigers to 213 yards.

"Heart, guts, character, fight," Herring said. "And it all starts with Coach (Houston) Nutt!"

Herring thought a minute, grinned and added, "And today we had stats, too."

Mainly, the Hogs had five sacks for 35 yards in losses, plus 20 more yards in losses on rushing plays.

Linebacker Sam Olajubutu, who had six solo tackles and one sack despite suffering a "stinger" to his left shoulder and neck, testified for the defense.

"Man, we just played hard," he said. "Coach Herring had a great package and we've never been so ready for a football game. We studied Auburn all week. At halftime we said, 'Let's play like we're 10 points behind.'"

Hogs secondary coach Louis Campbell credited some of the Arkansas sacks to a good pass rush and others to good coverage by the secondary.

"It was no one thing, but a combination," Campbell said. "Reggie called safety blitzes, linebacker blitzes. We committed a fifth or sixth defensive back early, and Reggie kept dialing that up. We got a lead offensively, and we didn't give up anything deep in the second half."

Arkansas end Jamaal Anderson had four tackles, including 2.5 for losses totaling 18 yards.

"Last year we were still learning a new system, but this year everybody has a year of experience under our belts," Anderson said. "Last year it was more teaching and today it was about fundamentals."

Linebacker Matt Hewitt led Arkansas with nine tackles, but said he can still play better.

"Today I was just gang-tackling," Hewitt said. "We passed our first test against (Alabama running back) Kenneth Darby two weeks ago and today we passed another test by holding Kenneth Irons under 100 yards, too (75 on 15 carries). We played team football -- all 11 guys on defense."

Hewitt said the Hogs knew Auburn quarterback Brandon Cox was not a scrambler and would stay in the pocket.

Hogs tackle Keith Jackson was in on seven tackles, including 1.5 for losses.

"Coach Nutt gives us good motivational speeches all the time," Jackson said. "After we gave up that 90-yard drive (in the second quarter), we knew we were better than that. We said, 'No more.'"

Nutt accepted congratulations from former Razorback Jim Lindsey, who later said, "This could be a breaking-out time for coach Nutt, you know, from the difficulties we've had. He has been blamed for things going back even to before he got here. This is a week-to-week business, but this could be a breakthrough."

" The win over Auburn could be pivotal in a Razorback resurgence to national prominence. And Houston Nutt will be at the head of the program. My complaint with Nutt has been his offensive play calling and one dimensional offense. Those deficiencies have been corrected with the hiring of Gus Malzahn. Arkansas has had two good recruiting years. A successful campaign this year should bolster recruiting in coming years maybe to the point of being in the top 20 or better recruiting programs every year. "

" It was a magnificant Razorback victory!! Malzahn called a beautiful game, and his best is yet to come because he is so creative in his play calling. Nutt gets credit for hiring him even though it was risky to hire a high school offensive coord. All of the Texas recruits that take recruting trips to Arkansas fall in love with ALL of the Arkansas coaches, so we've got a good thing going and the future will only get better for the "true" Hog fans!!! " I didn't want HN when he came, but he is a good coach. I would hate for the program I love to take steps backwards, that would take years to overcome. He has gotten the offensive coordinator that we all wanted. They are having a good year. Go Hogs Go "

" Come on Marcus, you know you didn't go to school at the University of Arkansas. Actually, I'm certain you didn't go to college anywhere so you aren't a true fan of the Razorbacks anyway. You and Bob Caudle need to "shut your pieholes" (a direct quote from MN writer a few weeks ago in reference to Coach Nutt and Reggie Herring) After one game this season, all you small minded, fair weather fans jumped off of the bandwagon. Bailed and started hating and bashing all the Coaches. Its easy to point the finger when you don't have a hand in any of it. True fans have stayed in there with support and have played a role in (and had their hand in) the support of the program. Some of you weak minded losers will be trying to climb back on the wagon this week, I'll be steadily kicking you right in the teeth and off the wagon, because we don't wsnt your kind of support. "

" The naysayers can choose another team to gripe about if they don't like the Hogs' coaches...these are our boys and our coaches win or lose. To criticize the coaches is a backhanded way of criticizing the players...and the players understand that. The players work hard in practice all week and play hard on Saturdays with all they've got. It's our boys team first, and then true Hog fans will support them. Our Razorback team has a great future for a small school in the NW corner of a small state!!...against much larger schools. Hope these great coaches bond together and are at Arkansas for a long, long time. Coach Nutt outcoached Auburn's Tuberville yesterday all over the field. Our players have shown our coaches how individuals put the TEAM first! Way to go Hogs!!! "

" I think it's time the nay sayers "SHUT UP!!!" Everyone is sick and tired of listening to the crying about HDN. Face it...he's one of our own, and in my eyes he hasn't done that bad of a job. Even after facing NCAA penalties for things that didn't even happen during his tenure. QUIT CRYING and say congrats because our boys deserve it. "

" It is pretty funny how when the Hogs were losing you never saw anyone but a true fan wearing that cardinal red, but after this week there were people I have known for years and never saw them supporting the Hogs in anyway, and were out at two or three in the morning Razorback from head to toe, and even crazier is all the people with Razorback flags flying from their car. Arkansas needs more loyal fans not one that blows with the wind. 0-12 or 12-0 I'll be there. GO HOGS!!! "
