LITTLE ROCK -- As Arkansas' players strolled to the locker room Friday evening, more disappointed than tired, LSU fans began a chant of "BCS! BCS!"

The crowd was lobbying for the Tigers to get invited to a top-tier bowl game. But it might as well have been a swan song for the No. 5 Razorbacks.

Arkansas entered War Memorial Stadium with the hope of keeping its slim national championship hopes alive, as well as improving on its No. 6 standing in the Bowl Championship Series.

But those plans were dashed with a 31-26 loss to No. 9 LSU in front of a crowd of 55,833. The winning streak is over. The talk of playing for a national title has stopped. And the Golden Boot trophy is headed back to Baton Rouge.

"That took us out of a national championship race, so now we've just got to come out here and play for the SEC championship," said Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, who rushed for 182 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the losing cause.

The Razorbacks (10-2, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) gave up too many big plays, quarterback Casey Dick didn't complete enough passes and the team's late drive for the potentially game-winning touchdown fell short against the Tigers.

As a result, Arkansas ended its otherwise impressive regular season on a low point. The players had to deal with their first loss since getting embarrassed 50-14 to No. 3 Southern California in the Sept. 2 season opener.

And the Razorbacks must quickly turn around following their first SEC loss of the season and get ready to face No. 4 Florida in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta next Saturday.

"We're still champions, and we know we're truly the champions," Arkansas defensive end Jamaal Anderson said, referring to the team's place atop the SEC West. "We can't let this get to us because we have a game next week.

"A few people are down, but we'll be fine in the morning."

But the hangover from Friday's loss could take a little longer to get over. It was a three-hour and 18-minute loss that left some Arkansas' players looking disheveled in the locker room afterward.

And Arkansas coach Houston Nutt had to address his quarterback situation after Dick struggled through his worst game as the starting quarterback.

The sophomore completed only 3 of 17 passes for 29 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and the offense stalled too many times against LSU's top-ranked offense.

It didn't matter that McFadden and Felix Jones each rushed for more than 100 yards.

"It was a rough day," Dick said. "They're a fantastic defense. They're big, they're fast, they're physical and they did a lot of things to put them into some good situations.

"But we still missed some big opportunities that would have helped us out."

There was Dick's interception early in the fourth quarter that led to a quick touchdown by the Tigers. There was Trindon Holliday breaking off a 92-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff following an 80-yard touchdown run by McFadden.

And then there was Dick throwing four straight incompletions on the team's final drive in the final two minutes to snap Arkansas' 10-game winning streak.

"I'd love to have a couple of plays back, maybe a kickoff back," Nutt said. "(We) can't turn the ball over on our part of the red zone and let them go 15 yards. That's too many gifts, too easy for a good football team.

"You don't have to help good football teams."

As LSU coach Les Miles sees it, his team might be more than just good. It might be the best in the SEC West in spite of Arkansas heading to next week's championship game.

"Ruining undefeated seasons is not why we're playing," Miles said. "... The (SEC) West division champion is the Arkansas team, but I'm not certain who the best is."

" Too bad Coach Nutt didn't pull Casey Dick for the Springdale lad, might have been a different outcome. What an atrocious outing for a quarterback. Of course he didn't hit a pass on the last drive, he hadn't hit but three before that point. If I was LSU defense I would have expected the run at least once. DMac might have broken another big one. I wonder if Dick will hit the bench now, or if Coach Nutt will leave Mustain there in favor of that Dick experience. To me it is a no brainer. Put Mustain back in and let him finish the season and get ready for next year. "

Nutt and Miles are Both Stupid wrote on Nov 25, 2006 6:29 AM:

" There is no way Casey Dick should have been in that game at the end. His play was beyond unacceptable. Nutt should have taken him out, but, instead, has already made comments that make you question his intelligence and ego. The only positive side is that Miles is such a complete ego maniac that his comments almost overshadow Nutt's stupidity. "

Jimmy wrote on Nov 25, 2006 7:33 AM:

" Dix...where are you? You need to back #11 like you have been all year. Casey played worse than Mitch ever did...he should have been gone by the end of the 3rd quarter. If not Mitch, let DMac play QB the rest of the game...at least the ball would have been in his hands every play. Oh well...the young men will regroup and play for an SEC Championship next weekend...albeit with a freshman QB, I hope! "

Nutt, what happened to your "quick trigger"? wrote on Nov 25, 2006 8:10 AM:

" Houston, you proved yourself dishonest, stubborn and selfish once again with your refusal to give Mitch a chance after Dick had proven it wasn't going to happen with him at the helm. I PRAY you take your crap circus to some other big top and be another program's problem. I want Gus to replace you ASAP. "

HogCowboy wrote on Nov 25, 2006 8:14 AM:

" Jimmy, settle down and let Malzahn handle the QBs and come up with some new routes. We can still have a season that will get us some of the nation's best recruits if we all don't fight among ourselves. We can agree to disagree like Southern gentlemen with dignity and class. Whichever QB plays next week, I wish them well and hope D-Mac has another great game. Whoooo Pigs! "

AngelHog wrote on Nov 25, 2006 8:17 AM:

" About recruiting, can Arkansas still possibly sign the running back out of Little Rock (Green?) who has committed to Southern Cal? He won't get to play nearly as much at USC, but could take over at U of A for D-Mac who goes to the pros after the season. This 10 win or more season should really help Hog recruiting. What other high school recruits will be impressed by Arkansas? "

Malzahn should be fired wrote on Nov 25, 2006 8:29 AM:

" Any offense that has that few successful passing routes should be fired immediately. I hope Nutt takes over all the play calling for the SEC Championship game. It seemed like every pass to those Springdale kids was dropped. Dick isn't responsible for that game, the offensive coordinator is responsible for that game. He thinks he's smart which makes him an idiot at this level. The only way to pass in this game is to run the ball when they know it's coming, and then pass, when they aren't expecting it. I hope Malzahn gets fired before his kids and coaching costs another huge game. "

JerseyRick wrote on Nov 25, 2006 8:37 AM:

" Malzahn should be fired?!? What? Not Dick's fault?!? WHAT?!? "he thinks he's smart which makes him an idiot"??? So any coach that thinks he's smart is really an idiot? What if they think they are an idiot, then they're smart? You're either related to Casey Dick, completely insane, or both. "

SEC WEST Champions wrote on Nov 25, 2006 9:12 AM:

Buster wrote on Nov 25, 2006 9:14 AM:

Huston is so bull headed he could not admit he was wrong in changing quarterbacks. Mitch should have been given a shot in the fourth quarter. Let there be no mistake about who has been calling the plays, maybe not on the field always, but Nutt has been telling Malzain ahead of time what he can and connot rum. Take that to the Bank "

North Carolina Hog wrote on Nov 25, 2006 9:17 AM:

" Good morning folks ! Out here in Carolina we do not get a steady diet of press about the hogs. My opinion is from the outside looking in. To me this all started with the Tenn. game. When we started the fourth quarter the game was out of reach. Why did not Houston Nutt play Mustain for the entire fourth quarter. Nutt had that opportunity to play Mustain in a positive light, not just subing him because Dick was doing poorly. You do not sign the #1 QB in the nation and not develop him at times like that. To me, when you have 2 good QB's there is no excuse to let a QB have a bad day (3 for 17). Look at Florida, they use 2 QB's. There is no doubt in my mind Mustain is our future. If not managed properly, he will be somebody elses future. Nothing against Dick, he is a fine young man, but that is the reality of the situation. Our leading passer yesterday was a running back. All that said, I am proud of this team. They have conducted themselves in a professional manner and they are to be commended for their accomplishments. "

" It was the best of games in some areas and not good in others. 2 more games left. I tell you we are better than FL with or without a good day from a quarterback. I would agree, if Dick plays in the Championship game like he did LSU, he does need to sit down and let Mitch have a go. We were just one or 2 decent passes away from taking LSU or the special teams not giving LSU a kickoff return run back would have done it too. Maybe a game plan where all the quarterbacks play and the one that shows their hot plays the 4 quarter? Okay, that is a dumb idea? :) But, McFadden was something else and Jones was supper too. So lets beat them Gators team!!! "

jeffstuckintx wrote on Nov 25, 2006 9:24 AM:

" Some of you people are idiots. If you you don't know anything about this sport you should keep your mouth shut. Malzahn did not take a sack on fourth down. That was Casey DICK. Those of you with a short memory should take a look at last years game. Late fourth quarter DICK also took a sack to prevent any shot at a field goal. We went with this guy because of experience. Definately experience in making a big play for the other team at a crucial time. Throw the ball to the end zone bone head. So what if it's picked off. Would have been better field position anyway. Play the freshman.. "

" Malzahn's play calling was the worst I've ever seen. The offense was a joke all day. I mean even when we would line 4 and 5 guys up, the routes were so amateurish in nature, that you could actually see the LSU players getting to the ball, time and time again, before the Arkansas guys. I would have to agree with the overall sentiment that Nutt should take over the play calling for the SEC Championship game. "

Agree with you wrote on Nov 25, 2006 9:50 AM:

Nutt continues to be clueless wrote on Nov 25, 2006 9:52 AM:

" This is very disappointing because as an LSU friend said this morning, the best team did not win. LSU is a great team and has defeated Houston 4 years in a row!!!!!! This is fact. Mitch could have brought some life in to a poor passing performance by Casey. Forget about experience and go on talent, who could have hit the deep pass to Williams......Mitch. Houston is again out coached and lets the team down because of his cluelessness. Mitch would have made the difference in the end!!!! "

And I do think the call on 4th and 3 was "bad" at best.....but, fire someone? This team is 10-2, SEC West Champions, and still has a great shot at the SEC Championship. ANYONE would have taken that going into the season. They played the best Defense in the nation to a game that could have gone either way. Take the frickin loss like a man (or woman) and stop whinning. YOU are why these fans of other teams make fun of our fans. Root for your team, criticize when justified, but STOP with the insane post about firing everyone or replacing everyone.......you sound like complete idiots. Great game, and LSU outplayed us......Now get ready for the big one. "

Russell will be gone next year and we will get them in Baton Rouge. "

We have to look past this and get ready for the game against Florida and then prepare for a bowl game after being out of the picture for awhile. GO HOGS GO!!! "

Our first year w/ Malzahn... 10 wins, and we still have two games left. When, in the previous 8 years w/ Nutt as the play caller, did we ever have a chance to win 12 games? LSU's defense would've eaten Mustain for lunch. We're talking about Mustains' wins, what big time time competition did he play against besides Auburn? He was 7-10, you people really know your football huh? Why is no one ripping special teams for giving up the kickoff return, or the penalties that took away a touchdown, or our CB's that over ran everything and got torched by their receivers? We've had a great season, the first time ranked in top 5 in over 20 years, and all you can talk about is what happened yesterday. Until each of you strap on a helmet and have a lineman pop you in the mouth, quit speaking. The only thing Arkansas fans are consistent at is the fairweather love. "

" This guy couldn't call successful passing plays if he had Joe Montana as a passing coach, and John Elway in his prime as a QB. Speaking of x high schoolers, Malzahn's passing routes were not even good enough for that level yesterday. Even Nutt's play calling in 2005 against LSU looked ingenious, compared to that moron yesterday. "

When Mitch was 8-0 all the national attention was on Mitch and Gus and you have to remember it’s the Houston Nutt show not the Mitch and Gus show. Houston couldn’t put Mitch in the game that would prove it wasn’t just about Houston and in Houston mind it’s all about Houston and nothing else. If he could he would change the Razorbacks to the Razornutts or the the Houstonbacks. All this game proved is Arkansas has the best running back in the nation and the worst coach. "

Mustain did not perform well at all, look at his stats. Heck, I can hand the ball off to Jones and McFadden and win. Heck, Mustain threw 3 picks against inferior opposition out of conference- Utah State? Just accept it, LSU won and it was not because of Dick. As usual, LSU uses you all to pad its win total. Geaux Tigers!!!!!!!!!!! "

The clock winding down with 2 min left and we are taking time getting calls in then and then Dick taking extra time on the line instead of gettin the ball snapped. Horrible ! Like I've said in previos posts - when Dick QB's there's only one receiver and that is Monk. Remember the play where Dick never turned his head to the other two receivers that were open (even the announcers made the fact known the other two were open) - this show his complete inability to watch the ENTIRE field for a receiver. The television announcers made the fact known that Arkansas just did not have much of a passing game. Well what a surprise ! You have to have a coach that will let you work on it first instead of his always famous stupid line "We have to establish the run" WOW did you really think every other team in the nation realizes that? The GREAT teams like, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan - the teams that are always near the top every year run the ball alot - BUT they have a established passing game the helps their running games even more. And now why man coverage the entire game - why not change ? "

As far as I am concerned, Nick Saban is not only a better coach but someone who knows how to win with class. As a Razorback fan, I am disappointed the Hogs lost the game, but they still have had a great year and should be better next season. I can't believe the coaching staff did not let McFaden touch the ball on the last drive. I suppose they had their reasons, but the outcome might have been different had McFadden touched the ball. Nonetheless, the Hogs have faired much better than anyone could have imagined. They did it despite playing a lot of freshmen and overcoming several key injuries on defense. I think it's time Coach Miles and the LSU fans get use to the fact, Arkansas is now a force in the West. Sorry Coach Miles and Tiger Fans, but Arkansas won the west outright. Let's see, a 7-1 record is better than 6-2 and when Arkansas beats Florida next week, they will have beaten both Florida and Auburn. Didn't these two teams beat LSU in the regular season? Sorry Coach Miles... you need to win at least one of those games to justify your statement about having the best team in the West. Get over it and try again next year... "

Sick and Tired of all the Liars wrote on Nov 25, 2006 4:38 PM:

" I am sick and tired of all the liars. Most of these people claimed Arkansas would finish 4th behind LSU, Auburn, and Alabama because Nutt was the coach. Most of these same people claimed Arkansas would never win anything, and the other western division championships were all other recruits by other people. Most of these people claimed Arkansas would never even have a chance in an SEC title game, with a coach like Nutt. And now all the success of this team is a direct result of Nutt's recruits, and these liars are clammering for a change at QB, just so they can claim some credibility to all of their previous lies before. I will speak for all of decent society, when I say I hope and pray Houston Nutt wins this SEC championship on Saturday night so he can finally prove to the entire country what all of these liars truly are. " How great is this? Because of Nutt's overblown ego the Hogs are now going to be stuck with Casey Dick at the helm instead of Mitch Mustain (who is too good to ride the pine behind someone with far less talent, so he may transfer -- and who could blame him?). Dick looked completely lost against LSU, like a schoolkid at the end of his first date and not knowing whether to give her a kiss or shake her hand. Seems strange that Mustain was good enough to go 8-0 as a starter, but now he's dogmeat, not even worthy of playing one series when your starter is having the worst performance for a Razorback quarterback during a pivotal game in years, if not decades. It is painfully obvious that the weakest link on offense is Dick -- by far. He's OK as a backup quarterback -- as long as your starter stays healthy -- but he is NOT the one that will lead the Hogs to the promised land. If the coaches want to win, they need to shed their egos, admit they were wrong, bench Dick, and tell Mustain to strap on his helmet -- you are the future and we will win or lose with you; and with Mitch there will be many, many more wins, but with Casey -- well, who even wants to think about it? I think Arkansas can't really pass the ball, and whoever that was that called their plays on Friday should've been fired no doubt about it. As I C it Arkansas can't stop the pass, and they can't pass the ball. We on the other hand don't run that well, and have trouble with our kickers. All in all, I expect a good game Saturday night, but UF should WIN this game by 2 TD's. I just don't think ya'll can stop the pass enough times to make it a close game. We can't just fire everybody who makes a mistake are we? " Is there anything to Mustain having an injury that keeps him from taking hits in the game? The coaches have kept him from getting banged on any of the few plays he's in. I believe Mitch is injured or he would have entered the LSU game in the late 3rd or early 4th quarter. What is his secret injury? "

Proud Arkie wrote on Nov 25, 2006 7:47 PM:

" Gees people. One loss and everyone is back to their inferiority complexes. LSU is NOT, repeat NOT a better team. They took advantage of gifts. Period. And judging from the classless fans they brought up from the sewage down on the Bayou I would dare say we are simply better PEOPLE. As for the calls to fire Malzahn or Nutt or both, let's remember that this is the staff that guided us to a 10-2 regular season. LSU had to beat us to reach that mark. DUH! I do not believe some of the whining in here. Thank God above that most of you folks aren't in charge of America's security. We'd be under terrorist attack all day every day. Get over your loser mentality and move on to the next game. And speaking of that, the arrogant Florida fans who've been posting here are your typical jerks whose lives are so empty and void of anything close to tangible they just clamor to post on another team's blog. Same for the LSUers. Just remember that we are from a better place, with better people. And keep in mind that hurricanes don't strike Louisiana and Florida by mistake. :) "

" Listen guys. Bottom line is that this game was just a shame. Chances like this come around once every 15 years for the hogs. Houston had the guys playing hard, he does a great job of that. Problem is that he made the great mistake many good coaches make that the great one's don't. He tried like the devil not to lose the game and forgot that the objective is to try to win. That and some questionable personnel decisions late. Mustain should have gotten the chance as early as the third quarter. Just for a series to see if he could rise to the occaision. Casey was clearly off his game. I don't get why Houston decided to put the game in Casey's hands at the most critical time. the most discouraging things were the lack of the wildcat on the 4th and 3, and the fact that on the last drive, the best player in the stadium was standing next to the head coach for 2nd and 3rd downs. I am not going to scream for Dick to sit down and Mustain to be annointed the starter but right now, Dick is the third best quarterback on the team behind Mustain and McFadden. To the Hogs, Hold your heads high boys, you did your job. To the coaches, you need to match your players effort by allowing the best players to succeed. "

OwassoHog wrote on Nov 25, 2006 11:10 PM:

" Bottom line is that Nutt is responsible and he needs to be held accountable. When he says stupid things like "I've got a quick trigger" and we need a QB with "experience" then lets Casey proceed to go 3 for 17... this is STUPID. This is not Malzahn's fault or position to keep Casey in the game. As some may recall, I posted a number of stats that conflicted with Nutt's position of "experience". Well, after this last game, Casey has finally lowered his completion ratio below Mitch's. Unfortunately, Nutt should have put in Mitch to see what could happen (at least Mitch is 8-0 as a starter). As for Malzahn's wish in QB, who knows... Nutt made the call and it is HIM that needs to be accountable for our loss. Remember that the last two seasons were so bad that Nutt was FORCED into making a "deal" to stay on as coach. Without this "deal", we probably would have seen maybe 7-5 or 8-4. We were 10-1 and even had talks of playing for the National Championship. THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT CHANGES (i.e. Malzahn+)! We blew it in several areas of this game: kicking, secondary, passing, and COACHING. Let's see what happens against Florida but in my mind - NUTT has BLOWN it AGAIN! "

Cindy wrote on Nov 25, 2006 11:16 PM:

The papers here in Lousiana are full of "Now we know who the REAL SEC West champs are". I'm a season Ticket holder at LSU. Love them Tigers. But, I was born in NLR and raised thru H.S. in Pine Bluff. So I still enjoy calling the Hogs now and again. I'd love to see the Razorbacks take out Florida next week, and really think they will. Do your realize how this would silence the La. papers, and regain some bragging rights with your neighbors to the south? Arkansas would have beat both teams that beat LSU this year. I am proud of the Hogs and the Tigers in this game. That McFadden and Jones are absolute marvels. If your team ever gets a third player, lord help the SEC!!! "

We will shut your running game down and will out score you, will you score, yes, but will not score enough points. Remember, you are in the SEC, when you play teams like Van, US, SEM, LM, OM and MS, your 10-2 record doesn't mean much. You had one good game, please don't get carried away. Georgia has the cutest women too, not shags like you other SEC states. The whole SEC world is watching this one little site in Arkansas waiting to drill down on your coach's taste in fashion. " Let's see ... 8-0 as a starter ... then the change ... everything's going good ... then 3 for 17 ... what about a change to spark the team? ... just a change to get something started? ... Pass hasn't worked all game, Wildcat offense has moved the ball but we drop back to pass four consecutive times when it has to matter ... With no result ... The day Nutt was hired I was quoted as "That's a mistake." by more than a few witnesses. Nutt is horrible. Nutt has run my team into the ground. Before you scream at me, this season is the exception and I love it. But better decisions could have been made. He can't make the big decisions when it matters. Emotional decisions do not make winning teams. And this coach, and most of his supporters, have proved they do not have what it takes to take a team to the elite level. Every Hog fan out there defending Nutt should be ashamed of themselves for defending Nutt. When we finally get national recognition, we lay an egg that gets laughed at by national media for all the world to see. We need better representation. I'm alumni. Shut your face. I love this school and have endured in the stands the late 80's and 90's. I still go every game and expect more. We are a major school. It's about time we act like it. "
