FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas cornerback Chris Houston is in no hurry to make a decision about his future.

Like other underclassmen, Houston has until Jan. 15 to decide whether to return for his senior season or leave Arkansas early for the chance to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Houston said he'll wait until after the No. 12 Razorbacks (10-3) face No. 6 Wisconsin (11-1) in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 before the junior makes a decision about the NFL.

"I haven't given it (any) thought. I'm just taking everything slow, don't want to move too fast," Houston said Sunday. "I'm just thinking about this Wisconsin game."

Houston is perhaps the Arkansas underclassmen who's the most ready to make the jump to the NFL, though wide receiver Marcus Monk and defensive end Jamaal Anderson have shown potential this season. But both Monk and Anderson could likely improve their stock by spending another year in school.

Houston, meanwhile, has proven to be Arkansas' best cover cornerback while defending some of the nation's top wide receivers this season. He held Southern California's Dwayne Jarrett, a potential top 10 pick, to just five catches for 35 yards in a 50-14 season-opening loss.

And Houston gave up only five catches for 68 yards to LSU's Dwayne Bowe, who's also considered to be a possible top NFL pick.

When asked why he's such a good cornerback, Houston said, "Because I shut all of them down. I'm a great cover corner. I mean, not too many people do too much on me."

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said he expects to get information back sometime this week on where his underclassmen, including Houston, could be drafted if they decided to leave school early.

Nutt has said that Houston, with his combination of athleticism and knack for shutting down an opposing team's top wide receiver, could be a first-round pick. This despite the fact that Houston has recorded only two career interceptions.

"It feels good (to have the NFL as an option) because that's something you dream of as a kid. That's why you play the game, to go to a higher level," Houston said. "But I've just been thinking about Wisconsin.

"God is going to make everything fall into place like He's supposed to, so I don't want to rush anything."

The only Arkansas player selected in last year's NFL Draft was free safety Vickiel Vaughn, taken with the second-to-last pick by the San Francisco 49ers.

When it comes time to make a decision on whether to leave for the NFL following his junior season, Houston said he plans to consult with his family, Nutt and Arkansas' assistant coaches.

Despite being listed at 5-foot-11, 188 pounds, Houston is considered one of Arkansas' stronger players, benching around 450 pounds. He estimated his vertical jump at 37 inches and his time in the 40-yard dash at 4.37.

Those numbers, if posted for NFL scouts, could improve Houston's stock. But so far, Houston's name is not listed on most 2007 NFL mock drafts.

"I don't want to move too fast or make any decisions," Houston said. "I just want to play this last game, focus on Wisconsin and just let everything fall into place."

" don't do it JR's!! take the 2003 group for example (batman, richardson, peters)... could've used that extra year to prove their worth "

Kinda depends on his performance in the Bowl game.. wrote on Dec 18, 2006 6:39 AM:

" Every NFL scout will be watching that game, if he does well, gets an INT shuts down their #1, then yeah it's probably best for him personally to leave. If he has an average game with everyone watching, then it's probably best he stay and get a high draft spot the following yr. "

" Depends on the bowl game? You think a kid should go pro based on 1 game? Look, simply getting drafted is overrated. Players like Houston need their senior years so that they can actually get better, not just appear better to the "experts." You can get drafted into the NFL based on hype and athletic prowess, but if you're not good enough you'll get spit out the bottom of the league and have to get a real job like everybody else. If your goal is to just get drafted, then go ahead. But getting drafted is a far cry from being successful in the NFL and you should use your college years to become as prepared as possible in order to succeed at the next level. The average NFL career lasts 3 years (see Joe Dean Davenport) but if you're in the league for awhile and you're successful, nobody remembers that you were a 2nd, 3rd, or 6th round pick (see Tom Brady). Nine out of 10 juniors thinking about the draft are better off in college, and I don't think Chris Houston is in that top 10%. "

" Is this a joke? About all Houston has done is run his mouth. He is not ready for the NFL. He needs to shut his mouth and learn another year. "

" Jersey Rick. I've got one word on your post. Amen. CH can only get better next year if he continues as hard as he's worked the past few years. It's not about being drafted. It's about sticking on a team. With the national attention the Hogs will get next year because of their success this year and D-Mac going for the Heisman, attention will be paid to the other players, A.K.A. Chris Houston. The tide lefts all boats and that extra attention can help them all, including Anderson, Monk, and Houston. "

" If a junior can expect to be drafted in the first three rounds he should seriously consider going pro. A defensive back has little chance of winning a Heisman and a big chance of suffering a career ending injury in the senior year. Take the money, you can always come back to finish your degree. "

" I think that if player go's to a school to play ball they should stay at least 4 year's. The NBA and NFL should stay away from these student athlete's. "

" I hope he stays. It will help him and the university. I would in fact like to see a rule that no athlete can be drafted until the senior year and I don't just mean football. Colleges invest a lot in these kids on all levels and I think all programs should have the right to know just how long a kid will be with the team. I also think to have these young men and woman given one more year to mature and earn their degree would help them in any professional sport they may go into. Maybe if the kids were allowed to finish college we wouldn't have so many problems in professional sport like spiting in the faces of other players or the brawls that seem to break out on a regular basis. Just my thoughts. But, I would hope he would use his senior year to add to his worth. "
