SPRINGDALE -- A $1,500 grant was recently awarded to the Springdale Fire Department to help produce a Spanish language commercial promoting smoke detectors.
Springdale fire Capt. James Hales said the grant will be used to implement a program to spread the safety message to both area and statewide Spanish-speaking populations.
The commercial will be produced by the Springdale High School media production education department, Hales said. The tape will be available to other fire departments in the area.
"We've done a good job getting the information to the English speaking community but haven't had anything for the Hispanic community. The kids hear it in the schools when we go in and do fire prevention talks, but the parents may not hear it. We're hoping this will help."
Hales said the department will also promote the Free Smoke Alarm Program in other Spanish media outlets -- print and radio.
