WASHINGTON -- Arkansas lawmakers plan to seek taxpayer dollars to pay for at least some of the $20 million U.S. Marshals museum to be constructed in Fort Smith.

Third District Rep. John Boozman, R-Rogers, said he hopes Congress will provide some money for the project.

"Our commitment is to kind of turn the rocks over and see what's out there," Boozman said.

Fort Smith won a competition for the museum Jan. 4, beating out Staunton, Va. Construction on a downtown site is expected to cost about $15 million. Another $5 million will be used to endow an operations and maintenance account, City Administrator Randy Reed said earlier this month.

Representatives of the Fort Smith committee that led the museum effort have begun private fund-raising through a nonprofit foundation.

Committee member Tracy Winchell said the group welcomes money from the federal or state government but will not actively seek it.
