ROGERS --The director of athletics for the Oklahoma City Public School District and the athletic director from El Dorado, Okla., schools are the latest applicants for Rogers' athletic director job.

Five people have applied for the position since it was posted Jan. 17 on the Rogers Schools Web site.

Mark D. Holderbaum of Edmond, Okla., and Derrill J. Smith of El Dorado on Wednesday submitted applications for the Rogers job.

Holderbaum wants the Rogers athletic director job because of the "super school district in which I can settle my career in as well as a wonderful place to raise my family. Its proximity to the U of A also provides top-caliber higher education opportunity for my continued education." He has been district director of athletics for the Oklahoma City district since August. Holderbaum has 16 years of teaching experience.

He earned a bachelor's in physical education from Harding University in Searcy; received his master's in secondary educationfrom Harding; and a specialist designation in education administration and secondary education from Southwest Missouri State University.

Smith said he applied for the Rogers athletic director position because the athletic teams compete in the 7A West conference, the largest classification in the state.

"It will be a welcomed challenge to help with the organization of the athletic teams as you form new schools within the Rogers district," Smith stated on his application.

He has been athletic director at the El Dorado School District since 1991 and stated he is available to work in February. Smith's application said he is leaving El Dorado for personal reasons.

A woman working in the personnel office at the El Dorado School District who answered the phone Wednesday said the district had not received a resignation letter from Smith. The woman also said contracts for certified personnel start Aug. 10 and run through May 29.

Smith also was a teacher in El Dorado from 1981 through 1990 and has 31 years of teaching experience.

He received a bachelor's degree from Southern Arkansas University and a master's degree in health and physical education from the same university in 1986.

Others who applied for Rogers athletic director position include:

    * Larry W. Garland of Clarksville, superintendent for the Scranton School District.

    * Keith D. Kilgore of Centerton, now director of the Regional Educational Alternative Program based in Rogers.

    * Bobby Cole of Prairie Grove, dean of academics for the Pulaski County Special School District.
