FAYETTEVILLE -- No matter how Arkansas' 2007 football recruiting class pans out, it might be remembered for one thing.

The ones that got away.

With the Razorbacks and coach Houston Nutt always emphasizing the importance of keeping a fence around the state to keep top players in, it's safe to say this year that fence came crashing down.

Considered by almost all recruiting sources to be the top three prospects in the state, Kodi Burns, Broderick Green and Lee Ziemba now have one thing in common.

They are not going to the University of Arkansas.

Instead, Burns -- a five-star quarterback from Fort Smith Northside -- Green, a Parade All-American tailback from Pulaski Academy and Ziemba, a Parade All-American offensive tackle from Rogers, have chosen to go different routes.

Why?

For all three top recruits, the answer is somewhat different.

In Ziemba's case, there were family ties to Auburn, where he signed. Both of his parents attended Auburn before coming to Northwest Arkansas. But Ziemba, who helped Rogers to a state 7A runner-up finish in 2006, said his family background wasn't the deciding factor in his choosing the Tigers over the Hogs.

"It didn't have anything to do with (my parents attending Auburn)," Ziemba said. "Really and truly, I was encouraged by my parents to take a look at more schools than just Arkansas. So I decided to look at three schools, Oklahoma, Auburn and Ole Miss.

"Auburn stood out to me and I figured I had to do what was best for me. All those people saying I was pressured into going there, that's not how it happened at all."

Ziemba said he felt good about his recruiting experience at Arkansas. Just not as good a feeling as he got from Auburn.

"It had nothing to do with that (a bad experience at Arkansas)," Ziemba said. "Those other schools presented a good offer.

"I just felt more comfortable at Auburn."

While Ziemba held nothing against the Razorbacks, the same can't be said for Green.

In an interview with television station KTHV in Little Rock last month, the USC signee let it be known he wasn't happy about the way Arkansas had recruited him, saying:

"I didn't feel (Arkansas) was the school for me. I didn't think it was a good fit. It was a terrible recruiting process. I mean I was like, this is my home state, I was thinking they were going to offer me first and they came in like 11th or 12th. All these out-of-state schools like USC, Virginia Tech and Penn State came at me first."

After choosing the Trojans early in the season, Green opened his recruitment back up last week before sticking with USC at the very end.

All the while, Arkansas was nowhere to be found.

"...I had a big interest in Arkansas, because my brother goes up there, my cousins go up there and a lot of my friends are up there, especially from (Pulaski Academy)," Green told KTHV. "Being close to home and stuff like that, but things just didn't work out."

As for Burns, he was -- like Ziemba -- back and forth between Arkansas and Auburn for much of the recruiting game. But he admits seeing what went on behind the scenes in Fayetteville, with Mitch Mustain and Damian Williams leaving the team and coach Gus Malzahn taking another job, didn't help the Razorbacks' cause.

"I felt like (the Razorbacks) were (recruiting me hard) in a way," Burns said. "But after coach Malzahn left, that kind of changed everything for me."

Burns said he wasn't surprised to see so many recruits leave the state, despite Arkansas' first 10-win season since 1989.

"Not really, because with everything that was going on at Arkansas I kind of knew what was going on behind the scenes," Burns said. "The 10 wins, that was just part of it until that behind the scenes stuff came out."

A Gap In The Fence?

Since 1998 when Houston Nutt took over as Arkansas football coach, five of 12 Parade All-Americans from the state have chosen not to become Razorbacks:

" The "Fence" should be renamed the "Farce". Houston will never keep the top talent in the state. The "SPECIAL" (as Houston would say) players are leaving the state. "

" Ziemba may believe in his above quote, but I don't believe it is reality. He hatched from an eagle egg. The focus of this class was not RB. Green looked to me to be another MM style train wreck in the making. Mitch Mustain became an unavoidable train wreck the day he publicly de-committed. There will be no Broderick Green train wreck. We probably won't hear very much more about him. Kodi Burns probably just didn't feel the love either. With his early interest in Auburn, the love just didn't develop. It wasn't there, what can you say? We'll just have to beat their Auburn behinds - and we will! "

" The so called Arkansas faithful that destroyed a great season, ran off 2 players that already signed, and forced 3 top recruits out of state, should be very pleased. If their goal was to destroy the University of Arkansas football program until they got what they wanted, they certainly accomplished more than even they could have dreamed. "

" Forced out? Bunk. Destroy the program? Bunk. Let's see how "destroyed" we look next year. "

Joe From Little Rock wrote on Feb 8, 2007 10:00 PM:

" We don't need kids who don't love the UofA and care only about developing themselves as players to go to the NFL. That is just stupid isn't it. We need a quarterback just like Houston so he can transfer when things don't go his way. Like Father like Son? "

" It is hard to recruit, you know there is so much negativity, and people say mean things, and it's not fair. Do I sound a bit whiney? Stop it, stop making fun of me, why can't you see how good I am. I am going to pretend to interview at another school so you will love me again. "

Bunko wrote on Feb 9, 2007 7:46 AM:

" Comments above,,,"BUNK", Green went west because he didn't want to duke it out with D Mac & Felix "the cat". Ziemba, of course it was family ties. Burns, perhaps he didn't fit the Hog style of offense. "

" No you don't come off a 10 win season and play in the SEC Championship game and finish 9th in the SEC recruiting. Some of these players will develop but offensively we need to develop this new craze in college football, the forward pass. "

Steve wrote on Feb 9, 2007 10:23 PM:

" Bunko you need to think through that one. Broderick could have redshirted because DMac and Felix are leaving for the NFL after next year. "

Bunko wrote on Feb 10, 2007 9:17 AM:

" Steve, you may be right but Green has signed with USC, a school quite likely to be sanctioned by the NCAA. Also, he will have to beat out Joe Mcnight. "

" looks like Mustain to USC as well. You know after playing the Trojans for the past couple of seasons it is easy to see that we are far superior in atheletic talent so guys like Mustain, Green and Williams that can't make it at the University of Arkansas are somehow greeted to USC with open arms. Shame, it really is guys. Houston had the program on a diving board ready to spring to the next level. Instead his ego got in the way. One last cry, WAKE UP HOG FANS AND REALIZE THAT HDN IS NOT THE MAN FOR THE JOB. I have never wondered publicly about this before but I think it is time for Coach Broyles to move aside. Times they are a changing and if you want to play on the big stage you have to adjust. I'm no longer upset about this, I am apathetic. I will root for the team and D-MAC next season but just wait until Houston starts to get jealous of the attention centered around D-Mac. He won't stand for it. Houston is the only person that can beat D-Mac out of the Heisman and he might just do it. "

NChogfan wrote on Feb 13, 2007 11:32 AM:

" I agree totally 100% with tnew. You have to start at the top with Broyles. Yes he did alot for arkansas tradition, but times are changing. And I believe we have to change right along with it. Frank you were good for the program for along time, but its time to step up to the plate. There are alot of committed hog fans that I've met over the years and they all tell me the same thing. Atheletic directors are crucial in recruiting also and nowhere did I see that Broyles stepped up with the springdale boys. He let Nutt handle it and look what happened. I want everyone to take a look at what happens next season. You'll all be surprised to see that we may squeak out 6 maybe 7 wins if were lucky. Thats because its a very lite schedule. The first test will be Alabama. Nick will have that program ready and I dont know if we will be prepared. Bottom line is for all these defenses playing against us, STOP THE RUN!!! Thats all they need to do. Its going to be a sad year, just wait and see. Casey wont survive the blitzes that will come his way and he will be tested all year. I'm a committed hog fan for over 40 years and will say dont look for a 10 win season for a while. "

" You can have those guys USC Fan you did not gain much at all except some whiney parents that will be on Pete Carrol's doorstep or the AD's doorstep if there precious children don't get to play much...I still cant believe that someone parents came to a SEC schools AD's office and argued about playing time.. WOW.. I mean it's like it's a Pee Wee football team. My child is not starting so I have to go talk to the coaching staff about this.... It's college football not PEE WEE wake up Sprindale, and the 50 or so fans that showed up on campus for the "rally" with there signs and stuff, let me tell you first hand, you don't speak for the entire state. Even though espn made it sound like it was the whole state, we all know the group of 50 was made up of whiney people from Sprindale or the surrounding areas. The rest of the state is behind the Razorbacks no matter what happens. If all the Springdale recruits come with the "Angry parent's going to the coaches office" package then I hope we never sign another player from Sprindale. What a joke.. Parents going to a SEC schools Athletic Director and complaining about playing time. That is so BUSH LEAGUE!!!! That belongs in PEE WEE football, not college and dang sure not the all mighty SEC... GET REAL!!!! WHAT A JOKE!!! "
