FAYETTEVILLE --Longtime Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles could announce his resignation Saturday at a meeting of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, sources said.

The board is scheduled to meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Epley Board Room in the Arkansas Union. There is no mention of Broyles' resignation on the agenda, but there is a provision for an executive session, as is routine for all board meetings.

If Broyles, 82, does make an announcement, it will be "positive," a source close to the situation said Thursday.

That could mean Broyles will continue with the school in some capacity and possibly stay on as athletic director until the end of the year. Broyles would complete his 50th year at the university in December.

"Dad has been considering retiring for two or three years," a Broyles family member said Thursday. "But he just loves the University of Arkansas, and has for 50 years.

"He's newly married, healthy and very happy. But if he retires, I think he'll do something else part-time. He believes it's important to stay mentally active."

Broyles was in Chicago on Thursday, visiting a friend in the hospital, according to family members. He was unavailable for comment.

Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times, a weekly newspaper in Little Rock, reported on his Web blog Thursday that Broyles was given an ultimatum to step down or be fired. Other news sources across the state were also reporting the move Thursday evening.

However, a source told The Morning News that even if Broyles did not resign Saturday that "he would not be fired."

Tim Hunt, a Paragould native who serves on Arkansas' Board of Trustees, said Thursday he didn't want to elaborate on whether Broyles was pressured to retire.

"If we were to be discussing that -- and I'm not saying we are or not -- that would be a personal matter and I would not be able to comment to you publicly," Hunt said.

Charles Scharlau III, another UA Board of Trustees member, didn't want to comment about the situation.

"I didn't see anything on the agenda like that," Scharlau said.

There have been indications for several weeks that Broyles was contemplating retirement.

"Dad will do what's best for him and the university. He's always put the university first," another Broyles family member said. "He's wondered, will he live longer being the athletic director or not being the AD. He makes that choice every day -- every minute, I'm pretty sure."

Broyles' retirement could lead to sweeping changes within Arkansas' athletic department. Northwest Arkansas NBC affiliate KNWA reported Thursday night Arkansas football coach Houston Nutt's contract could be bought out sometime in the next three weeks.

When reached Thursday night and asked about the report, Nutt had no comment.

Broyles has been the athletic director at Arkansas for the past 33 years after a long and successful career as the head football coach, where he compiled a 144-58-5 record in 19 seasons. The Razorbacks captured the 1964 national championship, seven Southwest Conference championships and made 10 bowl game appearances.

As the athletic director, Broyles has been credited with building solid sports programs across the board, including the nation's most successful men's track and field program with 42 national titles. In all sports, Arkansas has won more than 100 Southwest and Southeastern conference titles under Broyles' leadership.

Among the honors Broyles has accumulated are induction into the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983, induction into the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Gator Bowl halls of fame, induction into the Arkansas, Georgia and Georgia Tech halls of fame and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Lifetime Trustee.

His most notable accomplishments as athletic director are taking Arkansas from the Southwest Conference into the Southeastern Conference in 1992, and the $230 million in facilities improvements, including the expansion of Reynolds Razorback Stadium in 2001.

" I remember when Coach Broyles came to Arkansas from Missouri. I was just a 17 year old kid but I was excited by his Southern drawl and red hair and his excitment for the game of football; you could listen to him and hear in his voice his passion for the game. Watching him on the sidelines without his coat off, shirt-tail hanging out, knowing he was into the game and really enjoyed coaching. Sadly, somewhere along the line I think that passion he had for the game vanished; not entirely but the fire was not there. Too much being an administrator, I guess. He will be missed as a daily part of the program but the UA athletic program will not wither and die. A new AD will be appointed and Arkansas will once again rise to the top (as cream alway does). Hopefully, with his parting a new direction will be reached. It is my opinion and only my opinion the football and basketball programs need completely overhauled and a radical new direction be installed. Just what that is I don't really know. I would like to see someone come in with the same zeal and passion that Coach Broyles had when he first stepped on the field at Razorback Stadium in 1958. But for him it is time to step aside so we can once again reach the zenith of football programs. Thanks Coach Broyles. Goodbye. "

" Frank Broyles has done so much for the Univ. of Ark. & especially athletics. Before him, football was mediocre. Before him, other athletics was far less. He has led almost all parts of athletic program to national prominence. It will be sad commentary if the "Wally Hall crowd" is forcing him out before he is ready. He deserves to make the retirement decision himself. "

" Frank Broyles has done an excellent job and deserves to go out on top. Frank Broyles has class, and I seriously doubt that he was aware of Houston Nutt's personal vendetta against Coach Malzahn and Mitch Mustain. Coach Nutt has always been somewhat of a thin skinned weasle. UA should have welcomed the Sprindale athletes with open arms and with every reasonable courtesy. Instead they treated them as if they were from a Lepers colony. Houston Nutt has absolutely no class, and he has brought shame on a great program. From what I understand, Mitch Mustain couldn't even get shoes that fit properly from UA. Mitch Mustain and the Springdale 5 would have been the nucleus of a national championship team, but that opportunity is lost due to Houston Nutt's thin skin. If Houston Nutt were such a great coach, why is it that Reggie Herring's son is going to play for Auburn. Clearly Reggie Herring sees the sinking ship of a program for what it is. "

" The flagship is sinking; maybe not fast but it is sinking. Regardless of all the good we weem to believe Broyles has done it is past time for him to go. He will be eased out, then Nutt will be bought out (before or after Reggie leaves for Oklahoma State?). How soon before Heath is gone? Don't know. To get this ship sailing upright again massive and radical changes will have to be made. I don't agree it is the "Wally Hall crowd" is forcing Broyles out. It is more his non-action in some of the things that have gone on the last 3 or 4 years. Put a new AD in there and use Broyles as a bonafide fund raiser. We can't go forward into the future with the guys we have running the athletic program (football/basketball). We need integrity and stability in the fledging(?) program. We're not the new kids on the block and we should have been closer to the top than we are. Let's go HOGS. "

I think it will be good for the program whether he retires or is fired. I think things would have been different if he had not lost that passion. But he did and now look at us. We bicker and bicker over what is going on. We don't have the power to change it but someone does. Maybe that someone has listened to us and more changes will be forthcoming. I don't know if Coach Broyles is senile or just don't care anymore. He has grown to be arrogant and portentous over the years and even though I once admired him it is past time for him to go. He can take Nutt and Heath with him. I don't care. I want see the Razorbacks of old. Is that too much to ask. We once had pride and we were victors on the field of battle. We expected to win every game we played. If we didn't win we wanted to at least say we gave it our best (and mean it!!). We didn't settle for the namby pampy excuses we have been getting. I want to thank Coach Broyles for all his years of service but I also am ready to say goodbye. "

What happened to some kids who had the potential to take us to a National Championship is inexcuseable. Although it was perpetrated by the head coach, AD Broyles was ultimately responsible. "I think it says a lot about what they have here and the system they have." Mustain, enrolled at Arkansas with hopes of duplicating the success he and Williams enjoyed in a no-huddle, wide-open passing attack at Springdale High. Arkansas hired highschool coach, Gus Malzahn, as offensive coordinator, but the Razorbacks instead used a run-oriented attack built around tailback Darren McFadden the Heisman Trophy runner-up. Malzahn is now co-offensive coordinator at Tulsa another place Mustain is considering. Mustain would not be eligible at either school until 2008 "

" Frank WAS NOT going to retire this year. He was going to stay on till his contract was up in 09' and then move in to a fundraising capacity. The reason this is happening (and this is THE TRUTH because MY SOURCE works closely with him) is because recently the Board of Regients power recently swung 6-4. Meaning you now have 6 members from Central Arkansas to 4 from NW Ark and they are now trying to flex their power. These people have hated the fact the NW Ark has had more power and money (proven fact) then they have for years and because of recent changes on the board (some leaving and some new ones) they have the power. So the first thing they do is force FB out. Well, all of you wanting this I guess you are getting your wish! Be careful what you wish for because we could end up as another Ok St or Texas Tech. Go stand on Razorback Road and look down at all of the incredible facilites and all of the championships in various sports and you can than FB for that. We had better pray that the next person coming in can do 1/2 of what FB has done or this program will fall. If you do not believe that then you have your head under a rock. God bless you FB and all that u have done for UofA! "

The past is gone however, so with honor and gratitude we thank you Mr. Broyles - enjoy retirement, you've earned that. Now HDN will be bought out and replaced. I like heath too, but five years and only one NCAA tourney appearance (an out to Bucknell in Dallas) is long enough to make or break. Unfortunately, Mr. Heath didn't make it. So now UA will get a new AD, and new head football and basketball coaches. All things change and change is good. Change invites passion and, like "Grey-Haired" said, passion is needed. Looking forward to UA being national contenders in both major sports again. "

Does that include yourself sir? And if so, if you could make it happen, how far would you go to make it so? The U of A COULD fork out the money to make it happen, so far, they just haven't. Will they? I don't know. I'm hoping someday they will. My original point was to express my feelings of wanting a better coach as I feel we deserve. I have done so. You don't seem to really want to argue that fact as much as just want to argue about my intelligence. Now you want to talk football, that's fine. We should thank Frank, the coaches and players for a lifetime of memories. However the "Broyles-Matthews" system needs some rethinking. Let us take pride in our State, our school and our people. One more thing, back off of the spouses of ANY coach (whether it be for athletics or music). Unless you have been in a similar position, you don't have a clue what they go through. "

" The thing about the infamous email. It should never have been sent in the first place. We are talking about a grown professional woman who emailed an 18 year old kid. Not only was it in poor taste it was unthinkable. Whatever possessed her to do so? It was harassment, plain and simple. And, you can say what you want about comments about Diana Nutt being out of order. Don't you think she was way out of line forwarding the email. A wonderful woman would not think of such a thing nor lower herself to that level. Both of them were degrading to that young man regardless of what you think about him. Good hearted? She thought some of the things said were funny. So what she did set out to tear down the kid more. Since it appeared UA administration was not going to do anything to correct this the real fans of Razorback football took things in hand to devulge the underhanded scheme to wreck a young man's life. All of you that are quick to come to the defense of Nutt should be quicker to come to the defense of this young man. Mustain showed much more class by not responding to the bashing these two supposed ladies did to him. Shame on them and shame on those who support what they did. "

" For the sake of decency of Arkansans, please quit belittling coaches spouses. There just is no need. We've all forwarded (not written) emails that we wish we had never sent...every one of us. My good friends tell me those that I shouldn't have sent. Knock Coach Nutt if you have to, but please lay off of the spouses. You're showing a total lack of class when you attack people who are normally very decent people. Now the original mailer of the email to Mustain is another matter. It was just vicious. "

" For the sake of decency the coach's wife shoud not of forwarded the email. She set herself up. My wife would never forwarded anything like that regardless of what you might write. She opted to forward instead of calling her friend and telling her not to do that anymore. She added to the debauchery by forwarding it and show absolutely no respect for children. Wonder how these two women would have felt if their son or daughter had been raked over the coals like that. I don't think we've all forwarded emails we shouldn't have. Some of us are adults and would never consider that. I get trashy emails and delete them rather than spread that trash. And, don't you think Mustain is a class young man then the email. . .Oh why go on. People with scrupples don't do things like than. To do so you are setting yourself up for chastisement. "

" What was written about Nutt's wife was not belittling her. She belittled herself. She is just a vicous as the original writer or the email would have been deleted. If she was all that decent she would have done like your friends do you - call and say that email shouldn't have been sent. She could have called and said this kid played football for my husband and does not deserve what you said. "

" I for one appreciate all that Coach Broyles did to build up the Razorback program. In the Southwest Conference we rarely beat Texas. Now we have beaten them 2 out of the last three times we played them since we joined the SEC. It's made us a better program, and we can beat them again in 2008 and 2009 games set up now. But Frank is the grand ole gentleman. "

I was the son of a high school coach in Texas and I had a Mother. My Mother would have been infuriated over something like that. Thank God she never had to live to see what happened here. One thing that must be realized the spouse is also part of that team because she is the coach's wife. Anything she does reflects on the coach whether good or bad. She gets credit for doing right so why not give her as much discredit for not using good judgement. Is it all right if we blame Houston Nutt for forwarding the email? No, because that is one thing he did not do. "

He stood up for the team. Why HN set Mitch on the bench we don't know but we don't know what was being said in the back ground there either. Why is it that we on this post can say just about what ever we wont but others cant? And don't worry about having perfect spelling on your posts as long we can see what you are saying. It may bother some but that's to bad. It is problem the same person that thinks if you did not go to the UofA your not good enough to be a Hog Fan. So jest don't worry about it. That my be one of the things wrong with the program on the Hill. "

His allowing the ridiculous BS in F'ville to continue was irresponsible and the walmart and reynolds families donated the buildings so what did he do? Everyone knows he was kept around because noone could get him out. (the good ole boy system). For years fans have called for him to be fired or run off and FINALLY the good folks at savethehogs.com among others "the Wally Hall gang" have WON a battle but the war is still on for the head of the elusive HDN. He can be found in the living rooms of 17 year olds telling them anything to get their signature so he can save his job. FIRE NUTT "
