FAYETTEVILLE -- Brandon L. Barber, chief executive officer of The Barber Group, a development and construction company, pleaded guilty Friday in Fayetteville District Court to driving while intoxicated and failure to maintain control of his vehicle.

Barber, 30, of Fayetteville, was arrested Sept. 9, 2006, following an accident.

District Judge Rudy Moore fined Barber $400 and sentenced him to 90 days in jail with 89 suspended on the condition he complete 16 hours of public service. Barber also had to pay $305 court costs and complete screening at Ozark Guidance.

He was fined $50 for failure to maintain control of his car.

Barber was driving east on Deane Street near Lewis Avenue when his 2003 Land Rover struck three mailboxes before colliding with a utility pole and a raised driveway, according to a Fayetteville police report. The vehicle was disabled and towed.

Barber registered 0.15 on an alcohol test, according to a Fayetteville police report, nearly twice the legal limit of .08.

" Why is this news. Why does this paper feel the need to further embarrass this man for being stupid. Why is it important to "we" the people that this man had an episode of stupidity? Does the paper do that for every dui/dwi? Why single this guy and his company out. Just because he is the CEO of something doesn't make him OK at the societal stone throwing party. OK, the man made a mistake and I hope that he learns not to be a moron again and drive while having ANY alcohol in his system. I would like to know why this man's name and company had to be dragged into this. I bet his family and his children our thrilled with the tabloid news. Hopefully someone will read this before it gets deleted. "

" Barber plasters his name on every new development that he builds and makes himself a public figure. Were he not so egotistical, the schadenfreude would not be so satisfying. "

" he has a so-called "big ego" that makes it ok. Wow have we lowered the standard even further in our society. So because a person is a public figure, we get to throw a stone at their glass house without having to worry about our own windows. Nice! "

" Public embarrassment? why that’s just terrible. People who commit crimes should be punished in a closed session, so no one has to find out about it. Why should, Thieves, drug dealers, gang members, person's who commit domestic battery, assault on another person, and lets not forget sex offenders have their names in the papers. They should suffer in silence so once there punishment no one but them is he wiser. What a great idea, lets make that happen. "

No sympathy here wrote on Feb 24, 2007 2:55 PM:

" Barber thumbed his nose at local residents when they opposed his hideous "Divinity" hotel project. Don't be surprised if they laugh when he falls down. Police records show that he continued to drive on his DWI suspended license in violation of state law. He refuses to obey the law and deserves our collective disdain. "

he isnt saying wrote on Feb 24, 2007 3:13 PM:

" That those that committ crimes shouldn't be brought out in the open. What he was implying was that if the paper is going to state names of those that have dui's they should do all of those that have dui's in NWA. Other wise, it gives the appearance of a witchhunt. But I guess you all probably still have those torches and maybe even a whitehood around too...so I guess that goes with the territory. Criminals should be brought to the attention to the public, but there is a right way to do it and there is a pathetic way to do it. "

he is a public figure people wrote on Feb 24, 2007 6:22 PM:

" the difference between brandon barber and all the unreported dui/dwi arrestes is that barber is a public figure. he meets the legal definitionaccording to the U.S. Supreme Court NEW YORK TIMES CO. v. SULLIVAN, 376 U.S. 254 ..."A person can also become a "limited public figure" by engaging in actions which generate publicity within a narrow area of interest. " i.e he gets the same treatment as the mayor, president, police cheif, pastor, anyother person who routinly seekd out the media for self promotion.... "

" This really isnt fair. All this talk and speculation. All they saw was a blond person running into the darkness. Thats what the arrest report says anyway. Nobody knows if it was a female or a MALE. How do we know that there is not even more to this story...? Women always get the blame, just like the hispanics. "

or better yet wrote on Feb 25, 2007 9:25 AM:

" Can we blame Walmart for this too? Now that would add to the story and really make it news. Was the blond hair really a wig? Did the arresting officers have a HUGE grudge against this guy just like the paper and the witchhunters? HMMMM, I think that Mulder and Skully should look into this. "

Bruce wrote on Feb 25, 2007 10:41 AM:

" I guess it could have been his wife wearing a blonde wig as another option. But I doubt it. The officers could have had a grudge also, but I think it was reported by a witness that lives close by. Seen prior to the police arriving. Who knows the truth. Maybe you are right, a guy, wearing a female style blonde wig... "

maybe wrote on Feb 25, 2007 2:23 PM:

" it was a hispanic blonde man who looks like a woman that works at Walmart, yeah, that must be the ticket. They should get her name too and plaster it all over the media. That would make those that hate Barber happy. Cmon haters, just think, one day one of your family members might own a business day and if they make the blotters for any reason at all, then this paper too can spread your family business all over the place with no problemo! That would be great! "

" Oh but if he was smoking pot, now that would be bad...but since he was only drinking and driving, just a slap on the wrist. He has all the money, of course he won't spend any time in jail. Its the poor people that get all the time, the ones who can't afford his ritzy lawyer. "
