SPRINGDALE -- West Fork High School took home the championship trophy March 1, beating teams from Farmington and Bentonville high schools to win the Academic Competition in Education.
The 10-member West Fork team qualified for the championship round by winning its semifinal round against Elkins and Siloam Springs high schools.
In the other qualifying match, Bentonville defeated Huntsville and Fayetteville teams to compete in the final round.
Farmington skipped the semifinal round after accumulating the highest number of points in regular-season competition.
Dale Nading, coordinator of the competitive series, called the final match a "barnburner," as students answered questions in a variety of categories, including current events, American history and government, Shakespeare and literature, geography, art history, world history and physics.
Quizmasters for the event at the Jones Center for Families were Bob McMath, dean of the Honors College at the University of Arkansas, Karen Hodges, program director in the College of Arts and Sciences at the university, and Wayne Mays, executive director of the Siloam Springs Chamber of Commerce.
