Search Firm Will Be Used To Find Coach

FAYETTEVILLE -- This was not exactly the way University of Arkansas chancellor John White saw his Tuesday going, or now his Wednesday for that matter.

But with new men's basketball coach Dana Altman deciding he was better off staying at Creighton just one day after taking the Arkansas job, White was forced to talk with reporters and will be contacting a search firm today to begin the process of finding a coach all over again.

"This is one of the shortest chapters and one of the most disappointing chapters in the history of the institution and certainly the long storied success of this program," White told a hastily gathered media throng Tuesday afternoon outside Bud Walton Arena. "But you know this program is strong and we are going to be strong in the future."

White said he and athletic director Frank Broyles, who was on his way back from Augusta National Golf Club, will move immediately today to hire a search firm that specializes in coaching searches.

"Coach Broyles and I are going to discuss that in the morning," White said. "We have a firm in mind, but we don't know if they are available. We'll make the contact (today). Obviously it was beyond the close of business today and we didn't have the ability to make those contacts (Tuesday).

"I think the principle benefit of this search firm is, in a sense, the ability to make contacts outside of the view of the entire public," White added. "My belief was -- and I think Coach Broyles' belief was -- that we had strong reasons to believe that there were some individuals that had great interest in being here at this program and that we would have a great interest in attracting. So we move forward on that basis."

Arkansas' one-week search to replace former coach Stan Heath had been highly publicized and at times ridiculed by the national media as the names of Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie, Kansas' Bill Self, USC's Tim Floyd, Memphis' John Calipari and Marquette's Tom Crean were all mentioned before Altman was offered and accepted the job on Monday

"Now we have had a hiccup and we say 'OK, in that case, because there are likely to be all kinds of false perceptions now nationally at what is going on at Arkansas and what caused this to occur," White said, "we are going to have to now use a professional that can tell our story and tell it in ways that we are limited in our ability to do so publicly.

"They will be able to go and talk about all kinds of parameters in terms of what financial packages would be and what all the opportunities are in a way that you just can't do otherwise."

Speaking of financial packages, White said the search will not be restricted by money and that certainly the basketball coach could be paid more than the football coach if necessary, something that many thought would never happen at Arkansas.

"We are going to pay what we need to pay to get a top coach at the University of Arkansas in basketball," White said. "There are not any constraints that I know that are going to limit us there. That is one of the things I told Coach Broyles before he started the search: 'I don't want you to think small, I want you to think big and I don't want you to be worrying about what the salary is. You do what you need to do to get the best person here.'

"He was true to that all the way through the process," White said. "I have no doubts we will be able to provide the resources necessary. Now we have got to get moving quickly and we need to get a firm out there and making contacts with those individuals that they may know that we didn't know that would be available today. There are probably some that are going to be available now that would not have been available a week ago."

The Real Deal on the Hill AAU Tournament is this weekend in Fayetteville. It is an event that will bring more than 1,000 top prospects and the nation's highest profile coaches to Bud Walton Arena.

White said the search is not one that must be done before that event.

"We understand that, but we are going to take the time to get the right person for the job," White said. "In the long term, that is the most important thing. We are not going to be driven by whoever is available first. We are going to engage the services of that firm and we suspect there is going to be a lot of movement and a lot of opportunity for us in the next few days. We are not going to get rushed into a decision."

Until a coach is hired, former Heath assistant Glynn Cyprien will be in charge of the program.

"We still have Coach Cyprien who is here with us and we have the administrative staff working with the players and the trainer and basically that is their part of continuity right now," White said. "We will have a much better plan on this (today). I don't have a lot of experience in this so I can pull something out and say go to page 13 -- this is how you handle a situation like this."

" Cyprien is sitting there in limbo - Broyles is flying back and forth to Augusta - spending Razorback money for himself. That money should not be used for personal entertainment and don't say he is making contacts for other coaches. It will never happen but FB should permanently retire to Augusta and then we would not have to put up with his ego and could get on with business ie. finding a new AD - NOT Nutty, which will probably happen because FB has a "yes man" under him. Why should FB be allowed to pick his replacement? It seems there is no one on the "Hill" that has common sense. I am sure that a "change of mind" was not only because of family. He probably saw in one day the mess the athletic dept. is in. And others to follow will see the same if they have any smarts. "

" I have told the lot of you repeatedly, the Razorback program is in a "black hole" and will will remain until the end of the year at least. The only solution is-----dump F B now!, today and let the healing begin. Often times "lame-ducks" desire to destroy what they have been a part of. "

" So, we are back to swigging mint julips and playing golf------as the "hill" crumbles. The search is now for just ANY coach not a big timer. Frank is determind to leave the program in shambles and he has nine months to do it. "

" Finally, good business sense takes over and they hire a search firm. If Dr. White and Mr. Broyles had chosen to do things the most efficient way in the beginning the athletic department and fans would be spared a load of embarassment. Take, for instance, Kentucky. What was their AD's first step after Tubby Smith left?...hire a search firm. If any basketball program could hire a coach without having to resort to a search firm it would be Kentucky. However, their AD understood the current college basketball climate and chose to use a search firm to protect the potential coaching candidates and the program. Tommorow is another day. My hope is that the student/athletes remain strong for the man next to them. If you watched the pregame before the Nat'l Championship game on monday night you would have heard Billy Donovan speak about "this is bigger than any one person, this is about the man next to you." Stand strong, stand together Hogs your legacy may be one that is talked about for years. "

" When Frank gets back to Augusta, someone call his room and leave the message that he should take the next 9 months off and stay amidst the pines... Just contrast our AD with Florida's. In today's world theirs is the model you look for. The days of the retired coach moving up to AD so he can effectively be paid large sums of money to meddle with coaches and protect his dubious "legacy" by making sure his favorite sport is run by an incompetent, unethical bobo, are over, and were so about 20 years ago (see Vince Dooley). Here are the steps: First, hire Majerus, if he still wants the job. If he has health problems on the job, that's the way things go and no one has a crystal ball, anyway. Second, hire a smart young AD who knows people, sports and is hungry. Third, regardless if Hoosten wins the SEC championship, goes to a BCS or wins the NC (all unimaginable), he must never coach here again after the 2007 season is over. Fourth, hire the best FB coach possible, who knows how to motivate players, coach the x's and o's and recruit like crazy (If your going to be in our conference, all of the above are givens). Fifth, fire John White. He has no idea what land-grand university means, and has no interest in the general population of this state. "

Bobby's temper would get the better of him and this is something John is not going to put up with. Even though FB wouldn't be here long for BK to but heads with, JW will not put up with BK. But boy, what I wouldn't give to see him here as the coach. The boys would finally get the discipline they need and I gaurantee you Townes would think twice before talking back to BK. I really wished I had a ticket to the Little Rock game with T-TECH, I just wanted to see Bobby Knight. "

Forgiveness is divine so forgive and forget about it, move onto something else that is far more important than who is or isn't the coach. I HOPE HDN PROVES ALL OF YOU WRONG AND HAS THE BEST SEASON EVER! I met a hog quarterback this morning who transfered and he was a very nice kid. He said the team is going to be great this fall and THEY ALL LOVE COACH NUTT. They too, are going to prove all of you wrong!!! And I can't wait to see it happen!!! Finding the best BB coach will take time, patience is a must by all. "

White and Broyles know what it is, and will use a search firm ro hide it< it's an excellent strategy for suckering a coach to UA before he finds out, but then again, the ante is prboably rising to $2 million a year so why would the new hire care? This is not about football. 9-4 with the four losses coming to USC, Florida (National Champs), LSU and Wisconsin all of which were ranked in the top 6 when Arkansas played them. Far better than what has come out of the hoops program in a long time. U of A needs to find themselves a coach who can coach, please the fans, institute discipline among his players, and win...not necessarily in that order. "

" You know the funds spent for the search firm could be used to increase the U of A staff salaries. A lot of the staff can and have qualified for food stamps! But of course this money probably comes from the foundation. the state legislature sets the salary for all staff at the universities. But is it a shame that staff are paid so little and John White and his bunch are paid outrageous sums every year. Why? Why are they paid so much when it is the staff who run the place! "
