BENTONVILLE -- Although immigrants are contributing to the economy and development of Northwest Arkansas, Maria Garcia would like to see more Hispanic people going to college.
Garcia was one of the dozens of people attending a presentation organized by The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation on the population characteristics and economic impact of immigrants in Arkansas.
Garcia, who works with teenagers in Springdale, said the information related to education should be for everyone and especially for young people to motivate them to study.
"Immigrant students should work harder to be completely bilingual and go to college. The numbers that they showed us hurt me, so I would like to see more information for the community," said Garcia.
According to James Johnson Jr. of The University of North Carolina, one the authors of the study, an immigrant makes the same money or more than a native-born citizen, when the immigrant has the same level of education.
In some industries, such as health and social services, immigrants are earning more money than Americans because most of the physicians are foreign, said Johnson.
Garcia said she was impressed with the percentages related to the amount of work immigrants performed and how much the Hispanic population has grown, but unfortunately not all the information was favorable.
The level of college education among Hispanics (Mexicans 4%, Central Americans 9%) is the lowest in comparison to other groups such as Asians (52%) and native-born (17%).
Rep. Jon Woods, R-Springdale, sponsored a bill to enable local law enforcement to go after those who harbor illegal aliens, but the bill didn't pass the Senate. Woods said he wasn't familiar with the study, but he said the bill that he proposed was more about national security.
Woods said that when he was running his campaign for office, he was trying to address transportation and other issues, but many people complained about illegal immigrants taking their jobs in construction.
"I think that there is a lot of people that come here and want a better life ... but when you come here illegally there is lot of headache involved," said Woods.
He said that a lot of construction jobs have been affected by the cheap labor that illegal immigrants offer.
Bentonville Mayor Bob McCaslin said that the conference was informative. "I was disappointed that the data was two years old ... all those numbers are directional and a lot has changed in two years," he said.
Ana Hart, multicultural community relations manager from Tyson Foods, said the information from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation is what Northwest Arkansas needs.
"This study brings back to us ... what the immigrant community is about, not in assumptions, not in guesses, not in perception but in data," said Hart.
The information will prepare Northwest Arkansas to serve better the Hispanic community, said Hart.
The economic impact of the Hispanic population in Arkansas is impressive, said Margarita Solorzano, executive director of the Hispanic Women's Organization of Arkansas in Springdale.
Also important is the number of Hispanics that are replacing the people who are retiring from work, and the immigrants' buying power, she said.
"We are people who work hard and we are helping this country," said Federico Garcia, who attended the presentation.
Audience member Miranda Hallett said "one of the positive economic impacts that they showed us ... was that companies in this area are increasing their profits because they are able to pay to their (immigrant) workers less money ... I hope that companies recognized that and they are willing to pay to their workers more to increase their economic power, and to increase tax revenue."
