BENTONVILLE -- Although immigrants are contributing to the economy and development of Northwest Arkansas, Maria Garcia would like to see more Hispanic people going to college.

Garcia was one of the dozens of people attending a presentation organized by The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation on the population characteristics and economic impact of immigrants in Arkansas.

Garcia, who works with teenagers in Springdale, said the information related to education should be for everyone and especially for young people to motivate them to study.

"Immigrant students should work harder to be completely bilingual and go to college. The numbers that they showed us hurt me, so I would like to see more information for the community," said Garcia.

According to James Johnson Jr. of The University of North Carolina, one the authors of the study, an immigrant makes the same money or more than a native-born citizen, when the immigrant has the same level of education.

In some industries, such as health and social services, immigrants are earning more money than Americans because most of the physicians are foreign, said Johnson.

Garcia said she was impressed with the percentages related to the amount of work immigrants performed and how much the Hispanic population has grown, but unfortunately not all the information was favorable.

The level of college education among Hispanics (Mexicans 4%, Central Americans 9%) is the lowest in comparison to other groups such as Asians (52%) and native-born (17%).

Rep. Jon Woods, R-Springdale, sponsored a bill to enable local law enforcement to go after those who harbor illegal aliens, but the bill didn't pass the Senate. Woods said he wasn't familiar with the study, but he said the bill that he proposed was more about national security.

Woods said that when he was running his campaign for office, he was trying to address transportation and other issues, but many people complained about illegal immigrants taking their jobs in construction.

"I think that there is a lot of people that come here and want a better life ... but when you come here illegally there is lot of headache involved," said Woods.

He said that a lot of construction jobs have been affected by the cheap labor that illegal immigrants offer.

Bentonville Mayor Bob McCaslin said that the conference was informative. "I was disappointed that the data was two years old ... all those numbers are directional and a lot has changed in two years," he said.

Ana Hart, multicultural community relations manager from Tyson Foods, said the information from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation is what Northwest Arkansas needs.

"This study brings back to us ... what the immigrant community is about, not in assumptions, not in guesses, not in perception but in data," said Hart.

The information will prepare Northwest Arkansas to serve better the Hispanic community, said Hart.

The economic impact of the Hispanic population in Arkansas is impressive, said Margarita Solorzano, executive director of the Hispanic Women's Organization of Arkansas in Springdale.

Also important is the number of Hispanics that are replacing the people who are retiring from work, and the immigrants' buying power, she said.

"We are people who work hard and we are helping this country," said Federico Garcia, who attended the presentation.

Audience member Miranda Hallett said "one of the positive economic impacts that they showed us ... was that companies in this area are increasing their profits because they are able to pay to their (immigrant) workers less money ... I hope that companies recognized that and they are willing to pay to their workers more to increase their economic power, and to increase tax revenue."

The Heritage Foundation report calculates that for every $1 unskilled workers pay in taxes they receive about $3 in government benefits, including Medicaid, food stamps, public housing and other welfare programs. They are always celebrating something - birthdays, religious holy days. Christmas season is celebrated beginning in mid-December and doesn't really end until the first week February. During that time it is one big religious holiday with religious observances, parties and plenty of food. Mexican Independence Day in mid-September is HUGE. I wish we celebrated the 4th of July here like they celebrate their Independence day. I have never met a people who enjoy celebrating with family more than they do. Pinatas, fire crackers, mariachis, music, dancing, drinking, laughing. Did I forget to mention food? It's a blast! And they can do all this even after working 12 hours a day 6 days a week for peanuts. At american parties all people do is stand or sit around talking bad about each other! We have to much of the puritan background to really enjoy ourselves. I'm telling you, ask one of the families if you can join them for Christmas or a birthday, you don't know what you're missing out on. By the way, if you're an american visiting non-tourist destination mexico, you are treated incredibly well. If you go to a party you are the guest of honor. How would you treat a mexican at one of your parties? "

I can do the same for our country, including our governemnts bizarre policies on immigration. At the end of the day If I had to choose the country where I'd live, hands down it would be my beloved America. Immigrants eventaully do assimilate and in due time become part of the dominate American culture; simply look at the various immigrant populations that have come to our shores from all over the world. We no longer call them Englishmen, Italians, Irish, Jewish, German, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, French, we call ourselves: American. We have also benefited by many wonderfaul aspects of our past cultures: Corn beef and cabbage, St. Patrick's Day parades, pasta, tacos, etc. This is what makes America great. Grilled fajitas in a burrito along with a little apple pie for dessert, simply makes my eating experience all the more enjoyable. So be nice to our friends of all nationalities and enjoy the best of thier cultures. Now if we could only get our paranoid Southern brethern to quit telling our amigos to go home and get them to stop calling them bad names, we might actually get somewhere. Until then Viva America!! If those that are supportive of the trespassing can not understand that, then there isn't much to talk about, for they will never understand. It isn't about the color of their skins, it is about the illegal activity. The problem is getting something for nothing. The people who came to this country over the generations that made it a "melting pot" did so legally by going through the proper channels. If all the Europeans where able to wade across the ocean and come here illegally, don't you think this debate would have happened in the past two centuries. This is the greatest country in the world not because we are faultless or perfect, but because anyone can acheive a dream if you chase that dream the right way, LEGALLY. I know Mexican families and they are great. I also know illegal Mexicans and they too can be good citizens, if they do it the right way. These documents that you would throw out the window are the only documents that ensure the continuance of this great republic. I know that within the American mind lies the capability to secure our borders while upholding our nations sacred documents. Go back and read the Fourteenth Amendment, somebody thought it important enough write it in our nation's laws so that our country could establish freedom for one and all. Any law or proposal must first meet the scrutiny of this amendment, then and only then can it be considered. If you are proposing that we deny any person within it's jursidiction the equal protection of the laws, you are seeking to tear down what has made this country great. Every American citizen regardless of color has the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness. Any proposal that would impinge this right for even one single pigmented American will be met with great opposition. "

We could spend hours wishing these people away and ultimately it would be futile, they would still be here and you will still be frustrated. What I'm saying is that we accept reality as it is, not for how we want it to be and start from this vantage point. We can then take the time to get to know these people, we may discover that these folks are not entirely unlike us, in fact, they have the same hopes, dreams, worries, fears that we all have. Perhaps we then meet at some middle ground and finally get something done instead of YELLING AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS. There are significant percentages, which have been in the immigration pipeline for years and they are frustrated with the sudden soaring costs of their petition. Were there some undocumented protesters in the crowd, statistically probably, however let's not assume what we cannot possibly know. I can guarantee you that most of the undocumented immigrants were too busy working to roam the streets in protest. Enjoy your day. "

" Regarding your statement, "The people who came to this country over the generations that made it a 'melting pot' did so legally by going through the proper channels." Most who came here over the generations did not "do so legally by coming through the proper channels," because there WERE no "proper channels." The first immigration law was not passed until 1882, and it only restricted immigration by the Chinese. An unofficial policy in 1907 targeted the Japanese but the first "quota" law did not take effect until 1929, and it didn't apply to Latin America. So if those "melting pot" generations came here before those laws took effect, yes, they did come "legally," but not because they were law-abiding enough to apply properly, but rather, because there were no "proper channels" to go through. But I would be willing to bet that if there HAD been "proper channels" and laws and forms -- and if those laws had been as complex as today's; and if those "channels" had been overseen by a bureaucracy as unwieldy, incompetent and unnavigable as USCIS; and if the forms had taken YEARS to process as they often do today, then those Europeans who flocked here by the millions after the Irish potato famine or the failed German revolution would have done exactly the same as today's immigrants. They would have looked at their children, seen the desperate economic situation they were in, and they would have come, papers or no. "

It's never been about race, it's about the law and respecting the millions of people who have played by the rules. REwarding amnesty, a path to citizenship, in-state college tuition, social security benefits to cheaters, liars and thieves is a slap in the face to all of us who came here honorably and by meeting all legal requirements. "One city solicited the involvement of its citizens who may be inadvertently impacted and the other city used lies to justify their racist mentality" - give me a break. You see, you and your pro-illegals have for too long been able to silence American's with your threats of lawsuits for what "might happen", and your cries of racism. Well, guess what? American's are TIRED of it. So whether or not Rogers is approved for this program, many other communities around our Country are applying for the same thing. So perhaps, it's not just us Southerners who racist, eh? You see, we WILL take back our community's, one at a time, and you and your ACLU, MALDEF, LULAC don't have enough money or influence to stop it anymore. Again, Southerners and Americans are very slow to anger, and we are very compassionate people. However, our patience has been maxed out with this issue. We have been taken advantage of, again and again. By our government, by our "business leaders", and by persons whose interests are best served by having millions of another Country's citizens living amongst us - "illegitimate Americans". "

Springdale, unlike Rogers is smart enough to recognize this, so they have behaved in a manner that is completely above board and have the cooperation of the Hispanic community who also don't want criminals roaming their neighborhoods" - I have 2 comments. If the 287 program is such a tiny little program that will do nothing to stop immigration, why are you and all of the pro-illegals so afraid of it? Because you know it can be a VERY effective tool and once again, anything that might be effective is hysterically labeled "racist". And your other statement about having the cooperation of the hispanic community - give me a break unless you also think our police depts. should have the cooperation of the gangs and drug dealers before they implement any effectiving policing of those activities as well. You see, all are, as defined by law, lawbreakers. "

" "Illegal Immigrants CAN'T apply for welfare or Medicaid because they dont have a valid ss number.12% of their check go to pay taxes they never get back" - I'm so tired of hearing this - ask any school employee all of the freebies illegals actually do receive - free breakfast/lunch, section 8 housing, WIC - and DON'T tell me they don't get their taxes back. You see, alot of illegals go ahead and file their taxes, using an ITIN number - they do this because it will help them when it's time to apply for their green card. In most of these cases, due to the amount of dependents and their low salaries, they receive Earned Income Credit - which means they receive back MORE than they paid in - just the same as any other low-wage worker who gets the EIC. Doesn't that just make every tax-paying American happy. Oh yeah, I guess why I'm so sensivite to this issue is that I just picked up my tax forms from my accountant....guess what? I have already paid in over $20,000 this year between Fed and State, and guess what??? I STILL OWE OVER $8,000. So don't worry, poor little illegals. I'll go ahead and send in the taxes required to support you and your 50 children. "
