FAYETTEVILLE -- The Northwest Arkansas Writing Project's second annual "An Evening with Writers" will begin at 7 p.m. April 13 in Old Main's Giffels Auditorium on the University of Arkansas campus. Celebrity authors who will be on hand include Margaret Bolsterli, author of "Born in the Delta: Reflections on the Making of A Southern White Sensibility"; Thomas Cochran, author of "Roughnecks"; and Samuel Totten, author of "Genocide in Darfur: Investigating the Atrocities in the Sudan." Additionally, NWAWP teacher/authors will be reading selections from their own original writings ranging in topics from passionate and thought-provoking to humorous and nostalgic. Authors will also be available to sign autographs. The event is free to the public.

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Big Read kicks off at the Fayetteville Public Library April 14 with a discussion by Judith Krug, executive director of the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom. Krug, a staunch supporter of educating the public about their rights to free access of all expressions and ideas, will speak and lead a panel discussion at 10 a.m. The library will host activities April 14-21 that relate to the themes in "Fahrenheit 451." Other events during the week include a screening of "Good Night, and Good Luck" with a panel discussion about American life during the McCarthy era at 1:30 p.m. April 15; a performance of Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian," directed by Kassie Misiewicz of TheatreSquared, at 7 p.m. April 16; "17 on the 17th," 17 book discussions throughout Fayetteville on April 17; a talk by Nancy Giles, a radio, film and television personality who also provides commentary for "Sunday Morning on CBS," at 7 p.m. April 18; and preschool storytimes with local firefighters throughout the week. The week will conclude with The Big BBQ April 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the library. The Big Read is a new program by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. FAYETTEVILLE -- Guest artists Michael Anderson and Timothy Olsen will present a trumpet and organ recital at 8 p.m. April 17 at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building on the University of Arkansas campus. ROGERS -- Rogers Little Theater has announced auditions at 7 p.m. April 16 and 17 for the Northwest Arkansas premier of Ken Ludwig's hilarious comedy "Leading Ladies." The farce, set in the hills of rural Pennsylvania, will be performed June 8-9, 14-16, and 21-24. Director Ed McClure will be casting five men and three women ages 18-65. BENTONVILLE -- The drama department at NorthWest Arkansas Community College will present an evening of one-act plays at 7 p.m. April 12-14 in White Auditorium on the NWACC campus. Nine one-act plays will be presented, four of them written by Outer Critics' Circle Award winner David Ives. The plays will be directed by Alex Joseph, who is the secretary in the science department at NWACC. Tickets are $6 at the door. SPRINGDALE -- Often considered by theater fans to be one of the funniest plays ever written, Larry Shue's "The Nerd" returns to the Arts Center of the Ozarks stage for shows at 7:30 p.m. April 13 and 14 and April 20 and 21, with a 2 p.m. matinee scheduled for April 15. EUREKA SPRINGS -- A shifted schedule and expanded lineup of events has been announced for Spring Diversity Weekend in Eureka Springs, according to the event coordinators, Diversity Pride Events Productions. Highlights of this year's gathering include return performances by the comedy troupe Gayco (members of Chicago's famous Second City), a Gayco improv comedy workshop and the chance for attendees to perform onstage with the troupe. SPRINGDALE -- "Musical Relief," a performance of songs and stories about life in the Arkansas Ozarks during the Great Depression, will be presented by Brenda Joyce Coda, Shiloh Museum library assistant, at 11 a.m. April 21 at the museum. "The program will feature ballads and tales that capture the social, political, and even romantic uncertainties of the Depression-era Ozarks," says Coda. The program also highlights a photo exhibit on display at the museum through April 27: "Serving Our Clients: Rural Relief in Newton County" is based on the experiences of social workers Ernest and Opal Nicholson. FAYETTEVILLE -- Doctors Kathleen Paulson and Janet Titus of Fayetteville will return to the Fayetteville Public Library at 7 p.m. for a new round of questions and answers on surviving menopause. The dropping estrogen level resulting from menopause is linked to a variety of ailments, including osteoporosis and increased risk for heart disease. The presentation will include discussion and will offer a unique opportunity for women to ask questions in a relaxed and conversational setting. Drs.
