Pelphrey Impresses Players With Fiery Talk

FAYETTEVILLE -- John Pelphrey needed 10 minutes and a few choice words to endear himself to his new team.

Before being introduced at a news conference Monday in Bud Walton Arena, Pelphrey met with Arkansas' players, many of whom were admittedly "worn down" after the past two weeks.

But the former South Alabama coach captured everyone's attention with his fiery personality and R-rated language.

"He was cursing as soon as he came through the door," Arkansas forward Sonny Weems said. "We were like, 'Man, he's serious. He's serious about being here.'"

Considering how the past week has gone for the Razorbacks, Pelphrey's intense demeanor came as a welcomed relief.

Several players admitted Monday that they had some reservations about Dana Altman, who decided last Tuesday to return to Creighton University after spending around 24 hours as Arkansas' coach.

But Pelphrey made a good first impression with his new players by showing that he wasn't like the low-key Altman.

He was passionate during the 10-minute meeting. He also knew players' names, something that Weems said Altman didn't know during his brief meeting with the team before his introductory news conference last Monday.

"When Coach Altman came in, it was just a different vibe. That's why I feel like a lot of our players were iffy about his situation," guard Stefan Welsh said. "But with Coach (Pelphrey), it's a complete 180.

"He came in real fiery. He came in like he's been here for a couple years already. You could tell that he wanted this job."

Welsh said he was impressed with Pelphrey after learning that the coach played for former Kentucky coach Rick Pitino and served as an assistant under Florida's Billy Donovan.

Pelphrey's resume, in addition to his no-nonsense attitude and up-tempo style of play, helped his new players warm up to him.

Pelphrey spoke of wanting to run a fast-paced style of basketball that requires his players to press and force turnovers. He also indicated that things would be done his way.

"He is one of the type of coaches that this program needs," forward Charles Thomas said. "You know, a Nolan Richardson-type player."

That was apparently enough for guard Patrick Beverley to commit to staying with the Razorbacks.

After Stan Heath was fired March 26, Beverley said he would wait until a new coach was hired before he'd make a decision about whether to transfer to another school.

Beverley agreed to remain at Arkansas after meeting with Altman, and the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year ended any speculation Monday that his decision could change following Pelphrey's hiring.

"It's been real tough lately with the coaching changes and everything. But I really like what he has to say, and I really like what he's got to offer," Beverley said. "I'm going to be here to stick around and play under him, and I'm really excited about (that)."

Forward Vincent Hunter, however, was not with the rest of the team to watch Pelphrey's news conference at Bud Walton Arena. He also didn't attend Altman's news conference, perhaps a sign that he's looking to leave for another school.

For Arkansas' other players, they hope that Pelphrey's hiring ends what has been a difficult 24 days since they lost to Southern California in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

A day after Altman announced that he was returning to Creighton, Arkansas released a statement acknowledging that two players had failed drug tests and one was under academic suspension.

"The hardest thing to do is to stay focused in the classroom when you have situations going on like this," point guard Gary Ervin said. "The guys sat back, and we did some of the things that just took our minds off of it. And now we're excited and relieved today."

Weems was particularly glad to see the coaching search come to an end.

"We didn't think anybody wanted to coach us. We were like, '$2.5 million can't get a coach in (here)?'" Weems said. "So we're excited. We can't wait to get started with him."

They should expect a few curse words, though.

" Hope coach Pelphrey can pull our players together and get their best. I believe this team has much more to offer than anyone has seen. The players are talking good but I doubt they have experienced putting out the effort necessary to be top quality winners at the level the SEC requires. Maybe the stand around offense and reach, slap and grab defense will disappear this year. Some of these players should be NBA material if taught to fight like hell for every minute of every game. Maybe this coach can help these Guys reach their potential. "

" It seems Pelphrey wants the job. And he should. If he cleans up this mess and gets Walton Arena jumping again, he can write his own ticket -- in Arkansas or elsewhere. Those of us who've followed the Hogs since the 1970s know what can be done. Look at the banners in Walton Arena. Despite all the chaos and jokes, Arkansas is still one of the best basketball jobs in the nation. So we've had a dry spell. That's life. Let's look to the future. Pelphrey was enthused about calling the Hogs. He knew the history of the program, and he knew the players' names. In contrast, Altman acted like he landed on Mars when he got to Arkansas. Pelphrey is going to have an up-tempo attack. He's young (38) and seems eager to make a name for himself. I realize his record at South Alabama wasn't overwhelming. So what? There's no tradition, no Walton Arena, no crazed fans there, not to mention players. That's a difficult place to win on a consistent basis. Any honest coach will tell you that. At Arkansas, he's got the resources. I want to see this team play hard for 40 minutes, something I didn't see during the Heath regime. Just give Pelphrey a chance. Let's see what he can do. My prediction: In about five years, Kentucky will be sniffing around for Pelphrey. "

" It's going to be a huge adjustment for these players. They are going to have to start playing as a team, get in shape, learn to play defense, etc. But, I think from listening to him, that Razorback basketball may be headed back in the direction that the fans want. I am ready to see players who play hard, fight to the end, and hate losing. I am optimistic about the future of the Hogs again. "

" Florida Pig, thank you for the kind comment. Some people have been so nasty with their comments and it was refreshing to read nice comments. "Bob Dole", I think you hit the nail on the head about Hunter. He is a very unhappy guy and maybe JP can get him back on the right path. Is Hunter the last of the Nolan recruits? Or am I mistaken? "

" After Hunter had the nerve to get on tv and say what he had to say about Stan Heath I really wouldn't care if he did leave. Anyway, I feel really good about Pelphrey as a coach, can hardly wait until next season "

" Well the last thing we wanted to do was foul anyone. Laettner got open, grabbed the ball, dribbled once, turned and fired a very improbable shot. Basically, he got very lucky. That's the way things turn out sometimes. "

" Hey ex! Don't misconstrue the convoluted coaching search as lack of effort. When Gillispie took the UK job, it became obvious what was going on. The UA was an innocent victim of the dishonest former Aggie. "

" Welcome Coach P: We're pulling for you. I have not enjoyed Hog BB since Nolan began shooting his mouth off. You're a welcome change and seem genuinely enthusiastic about the job. Se ya' Hunter - as for the English major on the team, you're good and welcome to stay, but here's hoping you understand it's all about "team" and not just you. Go Hogs! "

GonzoHog wrote on Apr 11, 2007 8:48 PM:

" In reference to "Thanks Florida Pig's question about Vincent Hunter. He was not a Nolan recruit. Stan Heath recruited him, along with Ronnie Brewer, and Olu Famutimi. Johnathon Modica was the last of the Nolan recruits. "

" Vincent Hunter is a terrible basketball player. He is a turnover waiting to happen every time he touches the ball. I went to JA Fair High School so it pains me to see a player from my high school stink up the place, but I hope he gets a room with Ken Biley and neither of them ever return to the hill!! "

" I also feel most of what has been said lately about the Razorback program has been nothing but rumors. Of course there has been some unsettled issues, but every program has issues.Ours was just made national.Arkansas has always been somewhat of a doormat to those that report the news in the North. "

" What's wrong with Ken Biley? He was a good defender. As I recall he started the national championship game and held Grant Hill scoreless while he was in. "

gohogs wrote on Apr 13, 2007 9:35 AM:

" People can have there opinion about Nolan Richardson,I didn't like the way he handled certain issues, but he carried the Hogs to a National Championship and that is something no one can ever take away from the people of Arkansas. He did take away some of the glory of winning it by making mention of things he probaly shouldn't have at the time. But all said I was so happy when we won it.I sat and cried for a while,I was so proud.Something I have never done concerning a sports event. And what better than winning it against Duke.A program that had dominated in the 90's.I also remember John P when at Kentucky,he was a solid player and a sharp shooter is what I remember most about him.
