FAYETTEVILLE -- He has to form relationships with Arkansas' current basketball players. He has to hire assistant coaches. He has to put an academic foundation in place. He has to recruit new Razorbacks.

And, he has to relocate his family from Mobile, Ala.

Time is not on John Pelphrey's side, three days into his tenure as the new basketball coach at Arkansas.

"This is obviously a busy time of year," Pelphrey said. "I've been doing quite a bit these last few days. It is going to take some time, but I'm looking forward to getting some of these things knocked out of the way."

Despite his frantic schedule, Pelphrey took a few minutes out of his day Thursday to brief the media on a variety of topics. Wearing a vest with a Razorback on it, Pelphrey revealed his plans for the future in several areas.

First, Pelphrey discussed his future staff. He said that he'd like to complete his staff as quickly as possible but that he refused to rush the process.

He has brought two assistants along from South Alabama. Tom Ostrom will be an assistant coach in Fayetteville and Matt Figger will be the program's director of basketball operations.

As for the other two positions, Pelphrey is still looking at resumes and speaking to candidates.

"Obviously, there are a couple of spots where I'm talking to folks and evaluating what is best for our coaching staff and what is best for our program," Pelphrey said.

The 38-year-old native of Paintsville, Ky., has decided, though, that none of the assistant coaches from Stan Heath's staff would join him. Dan Hipsher has accepted a position on Heath's staff, and Oronde Taliaferro is mulling a similar offer.

Some have speculated that Glynn Cyprien would be a serious candidate for Pelphrey's staff, but Pelphrey revealed a discussion he had with Cyprien.

"I have a relationship with Coach Cyprien," Pelphrey said. "We have spoken. Right now I'm heading in a different direction in terms of retaining anybody from the previous staff. It's my understanding those guys all have some opportunities, as well."

Beyond that issue, Pelphrey said he would attack recruiting immediately. The Razorback have at least two scholarships to use for this upcoming class, in addition to signee Nate Rakestraw of Springdale Har-Ber.

Pelphrey said his staff wouldn't panic, though, wouldn't issue a scholarship just for the sake of filling a vacant spot this late in the process.

"We are certainly going to be recruiting and exploring every opportunity to see what we have got out there, to see if there is anybody we can add to the mix to our basketball team next year that can help us," Pelphrey said. "But at the same token, we are just not going to give scholarships away. They're too valuable."

As far as on-court dealings go, Pelphrey said he'd like to use individual workouts as a way to begin instilling more mental and physical toughness.

He said an increased pride in taking care of the basketball would result from the improvement in toughness. Pelphrey addressed this in response to a question about Arkansas' dismal road showings throughout the past decade.

"I think the No. 1 thing is don't turn it over," Pelphrey said. "It gets deeper after that. ... For the most part, games get decided under the five-minute mark. There has to be a level of toughness that it requires to get it done. There's got to be an understanding of when that moment in time comes in the game or where the game is decided."

" I like his approach to the game of basketball. This is a good team, but they have very seldom played in your face basketball and challenged the other team by attacking them on defense. And on offense they looked lost at times -- little or no movement, lack luster picks and screens if any at all. I believe coach Pelphery will correct the past style of play with intense coaching and in your face accountibility -- it is long overdue! "

" Want to know why attendance is down, read Joe's observations above. The past coaching staff had some positive traits, but anyone that has followed the Hogs could tell that approach was not going get us back to where we belong. I believe the roof will blow off of Walton next year. Unfortunately, I won't be there because I finally gave up my tickets last year due to lack of interest. Basically Nolan retired after the '95 season. We've gone ten years with very little to cheer for. Pelphrey's been handed the brass ring. And I'm happy for him. And us Hog fans. "

" well, here is hoping he gets the talent needed to win, we do have some talent now, however, I have often felt that Steve Hill needed better coaching and maybe now he will get it. "

" Considering he is bringing a five game losing streak to Arkansas. With an RPI of 130 and against the 230th sorriest schedule in division one. Perhaps, our Hogs will teach him a few thing about winning. "

" play at UALR a couple of times and on TV a couple of times in the past two years. I think people need to know that they did not press at all. I know the media keeps saying that he brings an up-tempo style. Well, in the 05-06 season, his best year, they averaged 73 points per game. That same year Arkansas averaged 74 ppg. "

" Averaging 73 points a game has nothing to do with pressing. I'm also not aware that many Sunbelt teams run and gun. If teams play half-court offense, your pressing on defense isn't going to get you 90+ a game. I've also watched Pelprey's team play this year in the NIT. They press when the opportunity is right, but not every game will be the same. The worst coaching attribute Nolan Richardson had was being one dimentional on offense. Teams like Pelphrey's, at UK, usually countered pretty well against it, with a pressing defense. The only reason Nolan survived it his first few years in the SEC, was because of his incredible guard depth. (EXAMPLE) In 1994, our guard rotation was Beck,McDanials,Crawford, and Dillard, with an excellent 3-point shooter in our center, Stewart. Guess who won the SEC championship? "

" I think coach P is hungry which is the number 1 ingredient in being successful. Being a basketball junkie and being hungry. Put the ball in the hole on one end and stop the other team from putting the ball in the hole on the other end. Hear your shoes squeak the entire game and hit your free throws and think team team team all the time. RECRUIT. I think we got our guy. "

GonzoHog wrote on Apr 14, 2007 9:32 AM:

" I'll give you a hint, it wasn't UA. No, Pelphrey didn't play on that team, (graduated in 1992) but it was the same pressing defense that was carried over, by Pitino, since before '92. Pelphrey has been at Marshall, and Florida, with the same coaching philosiphy, under Billy Donavon. At South Ala., He didn't have the personell, or depth he needed to execute this style full time. What will best serve him now will be to complete his coaching staff with men who have similar philosiphies and work ethics, who can recruit effectively, the kind of players who will fit his program. He'll have every resource he needs to accomplish this now. "

Jeff wrote on Apr 15, 2007 10:53 AM:

" I watched this guy play High School, College and coach. IN a few years, you will be paying big bucks to keep him. He's learned under Pitino, Sutton, and Billy Donovan. The Hogs and Kentucky will be playing games that mean something real soon. "
