ROGERS -- The technology is more advanced than the bumper stickers asking "How is my driving?" and gives a number to call. But the sentiment is the same.

The Benton County School of the Arts administrators want teachers, students, parents and others to provide opinions on a variety of topics and will conduct an Internet survey in coming weeks.

The open-enrollment charter public school conducted several surveys in its early years, but hasn't asked for feedback in some time, said Gary Moore, principal.

A charter high school, the Northwest Arkansas Academy of Fine Arts, will open Aug. 1 to serve ninth- through 12th-graders. Moore said the opening of the school makes this a logical time for the School of the Arts to ask about its programs serving kindergartners through eighth-graders.

The Arkansas Charter School Resource Center at the University of Arkansas purchased software to conduct the survey, generate automatic reports and tally results, said Caroline Proctor, the center's executive director.

The survey is so simple even a kindergartner can take it, she said, by making smileys or frowns on emoticons.

"There is an onscreen leveler. You use the mouse and the better you like something, the smilier it gets. The less you like it, the frownier it gets," Proctor said.

The program then generates statistics, "so every fraction the smiley moves, it changes a number," she said. "It's a chance to let everybody participate and give their opinion."

Survey questions will ask how many parents volunteered at the School of the Arts, how often they attend performances at the school and how often they review their children's progress, Moore said.

The survey will ask teachers how much support they get from administrators and whether parents are supportive, he said.

"We would like to be able to have it online and ready to go before school is out," Moore said.
