HOT SPRINGS -- National Park Community College will go completely tobacco-free next year, and the school plans to offer smoking cessation courses for free to help students and staff kick the habit.
"We're working very hard to teach our students to make good decisions," college President Sally Carder said. "Those good decisions also relate to our health."
The new policy, which also applies to college-owned vehicles, will go into effect Jan. 2.
The college joins North Arkansas College in Harrison as the state's only smoke-free community colleges, Carder said.
Carder said the policy was requested by both students and staff.
"I was especially worried about our nursing class," Carder said. "They're the heaviest smokers. The nursing instructors feel that the policy will help them because they can't smoke on the campus of a hospital."
