FAYETTEVILLE -- Hispanic sports fans of Arkansas athletics need to know that thanks to La Tremenda (99.5-FM), the voice of Razorbacks sports continues to have a Spanish accent.

One can add baseball to the list to an ever-increasing influence.

La Tremenda broadcast its first of three Razorbacks baseball games on April 8 when Arkansas hosted Mississippi State in Baum Stadium. Also scheduled are the Arkansas-LSU game May 6 and the Arkansas-Ole Miss regular season finale on May 19.

Carlos Chicas, 34, and Jose Lopez, 45, provide the play-by-play and color commentary for the broadcasts in Northwest Arkansas.

"Our goal is to broadcast every single sport that we have in Spanish," Chicas said. "For two reasons. One, it's good for the community and two, we personally, want to see more Latinos in baseball. Now that we have (former Springdale High placekicker) Alex Tejada (who signed with Arkansas) playing next year, there's a growing interest.

"We've excited and we appreciate the opportunity we have. Baseball to the Latino community is big. The thing we want the community to know, there is an opportunity to play baseball. We want Hispanics to be involved in baseball as well as the other sports we have here at the university."

The Latin broadcasts started with Lady Razorback basketball, and now includes almost all UA sports.

Lopez and Chicas created the broadcast team about a year ago, said Lopez.

"Carlos kept me in mind to do Lady'Backs soccer and basketball," said Lopez. "Well, basically the communication is good. We work well together." Matt Shanklin, associate athletic director and general manager of the Razorbacks baseball radio network, said that was a selling point.

"We're excited," he said. "Not only finding a station which is open to doing the games, but having talent for doing the games.

"We've always thought with the growing Hispanic population in Northwest Arkansas, there's clearly a market we need to get our product out to."

" Last time I checked, Arkansas was part of the United States where the common language is ENGLISH. If I wanted to hear baseball broadcast in Spanish, then I would move to Mexico. As an American citizen, I am tired of having to conform to special interest or minority groups who demand these types of services. It's not just radio stations, but labels on food products, restaurant and fast food menus, automated phone systems, etc. Before long... "press one to hear English" won't even be an option. "

" No one is FORCING you to listen to the Spanish broadcast. It's called the AMERICAN FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM. It's what turned us into the most powerful economy in the world. Responding to the market. Besides, I think WOOO PIG SOOIE will sound the same. "

" I am anti illegal primarily due to the issues I see with assimilation. I think this is a positive thing that will help Latinos to assimilate to Arkansas and become a part of our community. It always gives me a good feeling when I see a Mexican kid in Springdale wearing a Razorback t-shirt. Good for them. "

" Good, I think givng them a little initive to learn English will do more to help them assimlate to the area. By having two languages does not bring people together. It does the opposite. "

" Speak English since you are in the United States of America. "

" No one is making you to listen to the broadcasting in Spanish, just like no one is making you eat Mexican Food, Once you try it, you keep coming for more. Enjoy whatever sports you like in whatever language you speak. Don't forget, this country was and still is build by Inmigrants. and if you have a daughter keep her away from Latinos, cause you might get a surprise like "Daddy, Mommy let me introduce to my new boyfriend, Jose.....then I'll be laughing. "

" Where I work they have TV's in the breakrooms for workers to "enjoy" while taking their breaks. One breakroom they would have in spanish and the other in English. But that wasn't good enough for some of the RUDE hispanics, they would turn the 2nd set to spanish channel also, even to the complaints of some of their own people who were trying to learn English. When I walked thru the breakroom one day and heard Duffy Duck and Elmer Fudd speaking spanish that's where I drew the line. Some Things Are Sacred.......First oppritune time, I programed out the spanish channels on both sets....... So far no one has asked for them to be changed back (at least that I could understand). "

" I can't believe you censored me for disparging some of the redneck comments on this blog. I guess I should have read your terms of service before I over zealously defamed rednecks. I will restrict my comments from now on. But I stand by everything I said and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Thank you. "
