Drunken driving arrests increased this holiday weekend over the Memorial Day weekend last year, according to statistics from Springdale City Attorney Jeff Harper.

Springdale police arrested 17 people for driving while intoxicated and worked three DWI-related wrecks this year.

Memorial Day weekend begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and ends at 6 a.m. Tuesday, for statistical purposes.

Last year, police recorded 15 DWIs and one driving under the influence. A "driving under the influence" arrest is the arrest of an impaired driver younger than age 21.

"Usually, Memorial Day is our busiest day," Harper said.

By comparison, police had 12 DWI arrests over the New Year's Day holiday this year. During the New Year's Eve holiday of 2006, police recorded 20 arrests.

The highest weekend for driving while intoxicated arrests in Springdale is 25, set the first weekend of December 2005.

"I have no explanation for that record," Harper said.
