SPRINGDALE -- The area's future Minor League Baseball team is building its home -- and on Tuesday it got a face to go with the stadium.
Representatives of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, in front of more than 100 at the Tyson Park Pavilion in Springdale, unveiled the team's logo. It was designed around a theme of natural waterfalls in the area.
"This is the announcement that we feel gives life to the franchise," said Eric Edelstein, Naturals general manager. "This is our identity that is being revealed."
The logo was designed by graphic designer and Arkansas-native James Skiles of Phoenix Design Works in New York City. Phoenix Design currently has five logos in use in Major League Baseball, but the Naturals was the first for a minor league franchise.
"It's another step in the process of moving the team here, and everyone is excited about the future," Texas League President Tom Kayser said of the logo.
The Naturals, currently the Wichita Wranglers, will move to Springdale from Wichita in 2008. The Double-A franchise is affiliated with the Kansas City Royals.
The team's future stadium, currently under construction on the west side of Springdale, is set for completion in early 2008.
The remaining contracts for stadium construction are scheduled to be awarded today. If the bids come in under estimates, and most of the bids for the stadium and other public project have been lower than anticipated this year, a few more bells and whistles could be added to the stadium, according to city officials.
"They did a good job incorporating the surroundings of Northwest Arkansas," Springdale Mayor Jerre Van Hoose said.
