Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Tuesday named Dr. John Agwunobi, current assistant secretary for health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, as senior vice president and president for Wal-Mart's Professional Services Division.
The division was formerly headed by Bill Simon before he was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer for Wal-Mart Stores U.S.
Agwunobi, who will report to Simon, takes over his new slot Sept. 4. He will oversee Wal-Mart's health and wellness business unit, including pharmacies, vision centers and health-care clinics.
Wal-Mart and other retailers that have opened in-store health clinics have come under scrutiny by the American Medical Association. The organization has expressed concern over the quality of care offered at such clinics.
Company spokesman Dan Fogleman said the company wouldn't comment on whether Agwunobi's appointment was partly in response to the AMA criticism.
Simon said in the news release that Agwunobi would bring "new perspective, diverse talents and tremendous expertise to our company in his new role."
Wal-Mart plans to open as many as 400 in-store health clinics in the next three years.
