Tejada No Chip Shot For Starting Job

FAYETTEVILLE -- After kicking a 42-yard field goal to end Tuesday night's practice, Arkansas freshman Alex Tejada turned and got a quick high-five from coach Houston Nutt.

Only a few yards away, Samuel Tejada -- Alex's father -- leaned against a stone wall and watched for the first time as his son practiced with the Razorbacks.

"This is a new experience for me as a father to watch him play at this level," Samuel Tejada said, wearing a red Razorbacks T-shirt with "Dad" and the No. 1 on the back. "I enjoyed seeing him play at high school, but seeing him play at this level is really different."

Even before his arrival on Arkansas' campus this summer, Alex Tejada was called a savior, the type of strong-legged kicker the Razorbacks could have used last season.

But the former Springdale High star, who came in with the type of fanfare usually reserved for a top quarterback, hasn't solidified his place as Arkansas' starting kicker just yet.

Tejada has struggled with his accuracy over the first two weeks of practice. On some days, like Tuesday, the football explodes off his right foot. On other days, the ball sails to the left or right of the goal post.

Returning starter Jeremy Davis, meanwhile, has made the race for the starting job much closer than most fans and reporters expected.

Before being sidelined earlier this week with a foot injury, Davis had shown that he has worked on the accuracy problems that proved costly toward the end of last season.

It turns out the Hogs have a kicking competition after all.

"We're definitely battling right now, but Jeremy Davis is doing a great job. It's a great battle," Tejada said, saying all the right things.

"I know (Davis is) not coming off the greatest season, but I still look up to him, I respect him and he's doing a great job for us and he's going to continue doing that."

Surprisingly, the kicking job has shaped up to be one of the most highly contested position battles during Arkansas' preseason camp.

And Nutt isn't ready to name a starter. That might have to wait until Davis, a Fort Smith native, the most highly contested position battles during Arkansas' preseason camp.

And Nutt isn't ready to name a starter. That might have to wait until Davis, a Fort Smith native, returns from what has been described as a nerve problem in his foot.

The junior visited with a doctor Monday after experiencing some discomfort with his foot, and he missed his second consecutive practice Tuesday evening.

"Well, Jeremy left on a good note and that's what's hard. But hopefully, we'll get him out here before too long," Nutt said Tuesday. "But boy, it's good to have Alex Tejada out here. He's kicking very well, and hit a good ball for us toward the end of practice."

At one time, the assumption was that Tejada would earn the starting job without much of a fight from Davis.

Davis had proved unreliable toward the end of last season, missing several big kicks in close games.

Meanwhile, Tejada had a record-breaking career at Springdale High, and Arkansas' coaches were so impressed with what they saw from the former soccer star that they offered him a scholarship.

Before Tejada, the last high school kicker to receive a scholarship from Arkansas was David Carlton in 2001, and that didn't prove too successful.

Tejada said Arkansas' coaches didn't promise him anything during the recruiting process other than the chance to compete for the starting job. And nothing is promised to him now.

"(The coaches) told me, 'You could come out here and help us out a little bit' -- not necessarily, 'Go out there (and) take the job right off the bat,'" Tejada said.

"I never really expected that. (The starting job) wasn't going to be handed to me. I'm just here to compete."

" This Springdale boy sounds like a keeper, unlike the other 3. Alex, show those 3 that they should have stayed. Good things come to those who wait and don't whine about not having playing time. "

" Please, Tejada could be the greatest kicker in America and Nutt isn't going to play him until he has to in order to save his job. Even then, it will kill Nutt and his big ego that a kid from Springdale could succeed. Also, Shibest is about the weakest special teams coach in America and should have been canned last year. If I were Tejada, I would have gone to another school where I would be appreciated, and be taught by people who know what they are doing. Nutt won't let Tejada succeed unless the kicking game costs the hogs a few games and Nutt is under heat. "

" Of all the ignorant posts I've ever read on this site, and there have been many, bigtimenutthater wins the prize. You're saying that because of the town Tejada grew up in, Nutt wants him to fail? What about Ben Cleveland, he's from Springdale and Nutt LOVES him. How do you explain that? Your theory that a coach would offer a scholarship to a player and then hope for him to fail is just silly. "

" Brilliant insight .... with LIMITED scholarships to offer, an NCAA Div-1A Head Coach WASTES a scholarship on a kicker just to WANT the student/athlete to FAIL. Brilliant commentary! Incredible football knowledge! You should work for this paper "bigtimenutthater". "

" He did it last year with Mustain, Williams, and Malzahn. You two think that he wanted them. Only reason he got them was to save his own skin. He ran them off the hill due to his overblown ego and and thin skin. Not sure that is the same thing here, but you can't blame folks for wondering after last years off field fiasco. "

" BamaHog...to even think that throws you in the same boat with the knucklehead that made that post. It is just stupid to think a scholarship would be given to a kicker and hope that he fails...give me a break! This is no comparison at all to the other three. Bottom line is, we probably win at least one (Wisconsin) more last year if Davis had not fallen apart. It is time we went after a really good kicker and it just so happens he is from Springdale but that is where the comparisons end with the other 3! "

" Why do you folks continue to profer yourselves as soothsayers ... suggesting you have the capability to read people's minds / intentions??? Even the Justice Dept recognizes the fallacy of lie detectors, therefore, porporting to "know" what any Coach was thinking is ludacrious. Your personal bias is coloring "facts". Mr. Williams was the 2nd leading receiver on a team that went 10-4 and won the SEC West, this following two loosing seasons (largely impacted by the NCAA investigation). As to the off-field fiasco ... certainly COLLEGE ATHLETES parents seeking/meeting with a NCAA DIVISION IA Athletic Director had no bearing on the Springdale overblown egos!!! Hmmm? Certainly the fact an out-of-control fan emailed a player was wrong ... just as wrong as all the boo's for Robert Johnson during the USC game, just as wrong as fans debasing Clint Stoerner, Quinton Groovey, etc. in yrs gone by. Fans, drive-by media types, ego-driven parents, immature players, etc. had no impact did they??? Gheesh BamaHog, go cheer for UAB or UAH, your negativity on the verge of our National Championship run this year is boorish at best. "

" Many great football coaches have counted on a very good kicker to score the first 3-points for their team at the beginning of many games. We need Tejada to give this year's Razorback team by making field goals early in the game. Frank Broyles teams often scored a field goal before they scored several touchdowns. Knowing you have a field goal kicker you can count on pick up the entire team. Here's to you, Tejada, on being our missing link to added victories this year. (I can just hear Bama Hog now saying that Nutt is already the "thousand year old missing link" on the Hog team) "
