Tejada and Tuck Make Case For Starting Jobs

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas' depth chart hasn't been finalized yet. It's starting to take shape, but there are still a few names that need to be written in permanent ink.

However, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt might have found a pair of new starters during the team's final preseason scrimmage Saturday night in front of an announced crowd of 4,100 in Reynolds Razorbacks Stadium.

Coincidentally, both emerging starters are freshman from Northwest Arkansas.

Former Springdale High star Alex Tejada all but secured his place as Arkansas' starting kicker by connecting on 8-of-9 field-goal attempts, including a pair from beyond 50 yards.

Meanwhile, Shiloh Christian standout Crosby Tuck made enough impressive catches during the scrimmage that Arkansas offensive coordinator David Lee said afterward that he believes he's found a starting wide receiver in the freshman.

"I think we found a split end tonight. I haven't talked to Coach Nutt yet, but I thought Crosby Tuck was exceptionally impressive tonight," Lee said. "And that's a real good feeling after what we lost two weeks ago in Marcus Monk."

Over the first two weeks of practice, Tuck has impressed coaches with his ability to get off the line of scrimmage, create separation from defenders and make tough catches.

Tuck was Arkansas' leading receiver Saturday, catching four passes for 93 yards and scoring a touchdown on a 37-yard pass from quarterback Casey Dick on the final play from scrimmage.

Afterward, Tuck said all the right things when asked about whether he was ready to play college football.

"(I) feel good enough. We have a lot of good receivers, and there is a lot of people going for those (starting) spots," Tuck said. "I've just got to see where (wide receivers) coach (Alex) Wood, Coach Lee and Coach Nutt think I should be this year and years to come."

Dick and his younger brother, freshman Nathan Dick, looked sharp at times while splitting reps at quarterback. They combined to complete 14-of-27 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

But Tejada proved to be the crowd-pleaser.

The loudest cheer of the scrimmage came after the freshman connected on his second field-goal attempt from 55 yards out. His only miss of the night when his first kick from that distance fell just short moments earlier.

"It boosts my confidence a lot. Going in there I know I could do it," Tejada said of his two field goals of 55 and 51 yards. "At the end, I did it, I feel comfortable and I'm happy with the results."

Tejada showed he has a strong right leg that Arkansas could have used in several close games last season. And his impressive performance came at a time when junior Jeremy Davis, Tejada's competition for the starting job, is sidelined with an injured right foot.

Davis was among several key players, including tight end Ben Cleveland, fullback Peyton Hillis and offensive tackle Nate Garner, who were held out of the final scrimmage because of injuries.

Afterward, Nutt said he wasn't ready to name Tejada the starting kicker, even though it seems almost certain that the Springdale High graduate has the advantage in the two-man race.

"The thing that's tough is Jeremy Davis had a great camp, too, and he got hurt," Nutt said. "We've got two weeks (before the season opener against Troy University).

"He'll be back Monday, and we'll see how it goes. But boy, you gain a lot of confidence with Alex, though."

" I'm glad to here we have Crosby Tuck stepping up at WR. I already had confidence in Robert Johnson, and it looks like Reggie Fish had a pretty good camp too, considering he was projected to take over in Monk's SE position just a few days ago. I also like the speed of London Crawford. He has big play ability. I honestly don't believe we'll have any trouble passing the ball until Marcus comes back. Hopefully it won't be but 1 game, and he'll be ready for the Tide on the road. My main concern right now is Casey Dick. As long as he's not forcing throws into tight coverage, we should be ok. I'm also glad to here Alex Tejada is gaining consistantsy. He will still have to compete for the job a few more days, with Davis coming back, but that's a good sign that he doesn't have the job nailed down yet, because it proves we have 2 very good kickers competing for the job. Nathan Dick has been a pleasant suprise also. It seems like he just keeps getting better every day. I would still hate to see Casey go down with an injury, but it doesn't seem as hopeless of a situation as it did a month ago. GO HOGS!!! "

" Real fans continue to feel sad for the people that are always complaining. So how do you know if you’ve become “Bitter, party of one?” Bitters are constant complainers. Bitters say things like "This is unfair.” Bitters are blamers. Resentment is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die. And bitterness can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy since no one wants to be around a person who constantly emits unhappy or hostile vibes by complaining. Bitters and complainers need to realize that, ultimately, the one they are hurting with their negativity is themselves, not the Razorback coach or players. "

" USC.... The heir apparent to Jarrett at the split end position is 6-foot-5 Patrick Turner, also a Southerner; he was a 2004 Parade All-America from Nashville, Tenn. After him, Booty’s targets become more unclear. David Ausberry, another big, tall, athletic marvel, is one of the favorites, along with Vidal Hazelton, Travon Johnson, Jamere Holland and freshmen Ronald Johnson and Brandon Carswell, not to mention multi-purpose threat Joe McKnight, another frosh from Louisiana. Wonder which name is missing here? "

" Unlike us, they have a coach who embreaces top talent and doesn't have a huge ego that can't coexist with top notch players. Of course, thats the reason they continually compete for national championships and we get happy with one great season every ten years ( with a little luck). The difference is in the coaching, theirs is top notch and ours is in way over his head! Look at the boise state program since he left. It has elevated after his departure. If only we could be so lucky. "

" "lrhog" If you are talking about the missing names being the Springldae guys MM and DW it ummm just might be because they are required by the NCAA to redshirt this year...lol "

" Posts which belittle our players --- not appreciated, and frankly illustrates the absurdity of individuals thought process. To suggest that Peyton Hillis (currently ranked as the #1 college Fullback per NFL scouts), Marcus Monk, Felix Jones, and D-MAC are NOT "top notch players" is just plain irrational. Thru out Coach Nutt's career at Arkansas there have been "top notch players" who go on to solid NFL careers (i.e., Shawn Andrews, Matt Jones, Ken Hamblin, etc.). Obviously an emotion of "hate" is detrimental to rational reasoning. "

" Thats the whole depth chart,LOL.. non-scoll., redshirts...well everyone worth mentioning, there was one more not mentioned in this article thats listed below all the WR. I believe the context was players that will hopefully fill the roll of Jerret. Must be too far a reach not to even be mentioned. "
