McFadden Helps His Heisman Chances

FAYETTEVILLE -- Never mind his 151 yards rushing on 24 carries, his 12-yard touchdown run, his two receptions for 30 yards or his 42-yard TD pass to Crosby Tuck.

Arkansas' Heisman Trophy candidate Darren McFadden wanted to talk about the knockdown block he threw that helped spring Felix Jones for a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Hogs' 46-26 win over Troy.

"It was real fun to see that guy's legs go up in the air and see Felix go right by him," McFadden said.

With prompting, however, McFadden did discuss his career-long touchdown toss to former Shiloh Christian standout Tuck that put Arkansas up 37-17 in the third quarter.

"That was an ugly pass -- about 65 percent -- but it got there and we scored, so it felt real good," McFadden said.

Crowd noise nearly prevented the play.

"Our center was having trouble hearing, so I tried to quiet the crowd down," McFadden said. "But I think they actually got a little louder."

Arkansas offensive coordinator David Lee had a big smile on his face when he was asked about McFadden's performance in the opener.

"Aw, man, he is the winning edge," Lee said. "He and No. 25 (Jones). I'm so glad both of them are here."

When Jones scored on a 44-yard run to give Arkansas a 30-17 lead, McFadden ran half the length of the sideline to congratulate him, even though McFadden had been nursing a leg cramp at the time.

"My calf muscle was cramping," McFadden said. "It was the heat, and just being out there running. But I'm fine. I'm 100 percent."

Danny Nutt, who coached McFadden his first two years at Arkansas, was proud of the Hogs' main man.

"I thought he played great," D-Nutt said. "I came down and visited with him at halftime after everyone got done with the meetings, and I told him he was this close to breaking one. I miss it (coaching)."

Marcus Monk, who had to play the role of cheerleader as he sat out with an injured knee, said, "I thought Darren played real well. Everyone executed well on offense."

About Arkansas' passing game, which produced 157 yards, McFadden said, "I'm not worried about that. We've got some young receivers, and our passing game will come."

Of his two bobbles on handoff attempts from the WildHog, McFadden said, "I got a little excited and pulled the ball out too fast. I need to let the game come to me and not force things."

McFadden seemed unbothered that he and Jones accounted for 366 of Arkansas' 507 yards -- rushing, passing or receiving.

"We were just trying to do something to keep scoring," McFadden said.

" I enjoyed the game and tickled to death that we won. Passing wasn't pretty but enough against this team. I wonder if something was wrong with #5 just before half time. He brought us down the field to about the 11 yard line then was taken out. He was on fire, yet out he comes and in comes a guy who hasn't played to that point. Looked like a bad decision that cost us 4 points, settling for 3 instead of 7 we most likely could have gotten. Maybe he was cramped, tired, sick or something? I was expecting Nathan Dick would get some practice time. Are we saving him for redshirt? Thought he was #2. If he is #2, I hope we get him in some of these gimme games so he can gain experience. 50 rushes, 22 passes, we will be in trouble soon, like in two weeks against Alabama, if we cannot pass enough to keep Alabama's speed and size off our runners.
