FAYETTEVILLE -- As Arkansas' players lounged around the team hotel on Saturday afternoon, waiting for kickoff, they caught a glimpse of what not to do.

Fullback Peyton Hillis watched with his teammates as No. 5 Michigan suffered the first major upset of the college football season, getting shocked by Division I-AA's Appalachian State.

The No. 21 Razorbacks wanted to avoid falling into that same trap.

The Michigan loss served as another reminder of what can happen when a big-time school takes a lesser-known opponent lightly.

And after letting Troy University hang around for the first half of Saturday night's season opener, Arkansas made sure to take care of business by pulling away for a 46-26 win in front of 73,926 in Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

"Everybody knows now it's not about talent. It's only about the team that shows up to play," Hillis said. "Today Appalachian State came to show up against Michigan, and we weren't going to let that happen to us tonight."

At one point, it looked like Arkansas (1-0) was going to have trouble with Troy, which has earned a reputation for giving big-time schools problems.

Troy quarterback Omar Haugabook dismantled Arkansas' secondary in the first half, and the Trojans (0-1) went into halftime trailing only 23-17.

But the Razorbacks avoided the same fate as Michigan, using an offensive explosion in the third quarter and an improved effort from the defense to pull away down the stretch.

"Everybody was thinking in our heads, 'Well, we can't have a small school come in our house and give us a game and give us a run for our money,'" Arkansas strong safety Matt Hewitt said.

Before kickoff, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt didn't say anything to his players about how tiny Appalachian State had gone into the Big House and knocked off the Wolverines 34-32.

But Nutt made it a point to bring it up after Arkansas scored 23 second-half points to silence any talk of Troy possibly pulling off the second major upset of the opening weekend.

"It just sent a real signal," Nutt said of the Michigan loss. "It put a lot of emphasis on, 'Hey, let's take care of business. You can't flop around.'"

Arkansas' offense struggled to find a rhythm and move the football in the first half. As a result, the Razorbacks went into halftime leading only 23-17.

But they got into a groove after the coaches gave what several players said was a cool and calm speech at halftime.

Running back Felix Jones broke off a 44-yard touchdown run at 6:48 in the third quarter, and fellow tailback Darren McFadden tossed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Crosby Tuck 1:16 later to extend Arkansas' lead to 37-17.

McFadden kicked off his Heisman Trophy campaign with 151 yards rushing and one touchdown, and Jones added 129 yards and one score.

"We had to shake some of the rust off," said Arkansas quarterback Casey Dick, who completed 11-of-20 passes for 108 yards.

"We came out in the second half, things started clicking for us (and) everybody kind of got into a groove."

Troy couldn't counter Arkansas' attack. The Razorbacks' secondary clamped down on Haugabook, not allowing the versatile quarterback any room to run or throw the football.

"It was a great job for the secondary because a lot of people talk about the secondary how it's a question for us," Hewitt said.

"We proved a lot of people wrong because Troy University is a great program, especially they've got a great run-and-shoot team."

In the days leading up to Saturday, Arkansas' coaches stressed to their players that Troy should not be overlooked. The message came across loud and clear.

Rather than leaving Fayetteville with a upset, the Trojans departed with simply a $425,000 check for giving the Razorbacks an early scare.

" Scared me that's for sure. They took inferior talend and marched up and down the field in the first half with an offense our coach said wouldn't work in the sec. What a joke "

" well lets just hope the same bland offense and same lack of talent pulls us through against Bama....no 120 would have been nice. especially if our qb could have completed at least one pass to a wide out. d-mac was the only one that did that. "

" Razorrod, that vaunted offense didn't look to hot on Saturday vs LA Morrow. It's a good thing Tulsa has a very weak schedule or you might have "some explaiinin" to do. "

" ChiefRazor1, that "not so" vaunted (as I don't recall anyone ever bragging about) Tulsa offense looked pretty good actually as their quarterback was 22/31, 307 yards and 3 touchdowns. Dick went 11/20, 108 yards and no touchdowns. Razorrod is correct in insinuating that the Hog offense better pick it up against Bama and the defense better act like they have a purpose or we will be 1-1 after Saturday night. If Bama has a quarter where they score 17 points like Troy did Hogs won't survive. "

" Anytime a good college defense has to stop only the run to win, if they have much offense at all, they will win. With Herring coaching our defense, we may be able to hold Bama down some, but with only the run to defend, Bama playing at home, losing to us last year by a fluke, and with them having better coaching than last year, our chances are slim and none. We have a stable of great runners, great returners, good kicking, a defense that I know will improve and a passing attack that is downright pitiful. #5 and #25 can make chicken salad out of chicken feathers or we would be 0-1 and Troy would be 1-0. The question is can Herring's defense hold Alabama to less points than #5 and #25 can generate. Thats gonna be tough. "

" Co-Hog, Tulsa's offense left their defense completely out to dry. If you watched the game on the deuce, you would have seen that a few breaks the other way, and LA-Mo wins that game. At the end of the game Tulsa's defense was very tired. Truth is, that up/down the field offense would never work in the SEC, where teams are very fast on defense. You do continual 3 and outs without giving your defense a rest in this league, and the game is over by the 4th qrtr everytime. Co-hog that's the reality of the "vaunted" offense, that Malzahn even wrote a book about. Yes, Alabama is going to be a tough game, it is always going to be tough game, and that aint gonna change whether Malzahn's vaunted offense is running things, or Lee's offense is running things. Alabama is a tough place to play, and its always going to be a tough place to play. And NO NWA Arkansasrenown 2nd rate high school coach would change a thing in that regard, certainly for the positive anyway. BTW, you take Springdale's best Mustain/Malzahn led team and they aren't even ranked in the top 10 in places like Texas and Florida, and wouldn't win anything in South Carolina, Georgia, or Louisiana, and that's another fact about the great Springdale klan. "

" I don't want to argue. Tulsa's offense had a four point lead with 4:49 left to go in the first half. The offense committed a fumble resulting in a LaM touchdown; the defense gave up the that last touchdown of the game to LaM. Tulsa's defense shut the LaM offense down in the second half, while the offense scored 21 more points. Hogs offense had six fumbles, two were lost. If it were not for Felix Jones running a 90 yard kickoff for a touchdown the Hogs would have been down at the half 17-16. Special teams, not hog offense, gave Hogs the lead at the half. The up/down the field offense worked last year for at least eight games in the SEC and is in fact what crippled Auburn. I'm not pro or con Malzahn, but in fact he would have to be a first rate hs coach as his SHS football team won the state championship and he produced the Parade top rated quarterback in the nation. Since SHS is in Arkansas they don't have to be concerned with any other state since the Arkansas state championship has to occur before any other national hs football rankings. "

" I am curious. Are you Houston Nutt? ChiefRazor1, sounds like the head coach. Either way, and if you are, I want you to know I like you Houston and I sure do hope the very best for UA this year I really really do. I sit ont he edge of my seat throughout every single game. If you are Houston, I'm rooting for you. If not, you sure fooled me and either way we're both Hog fans - GO HOGS GO!!! "

" Am I the only one, or does razorrod on here now, sound just like hogfanintx...with a fake mustache and a wig for a monicker. This razorrod started posting on here at almost exactly the same time as hogfanintx was politely booted off for bad behavior on here. Whatever the Hogs will prevail this year with a 9-3 or 10-2 record which will satisfy the loyal fans. Then we badly need a bowl win to cap it all off. "

GONZO HAWG wrote on Sep 3, 2007 12:49 PM:

" Looks like you might of ruffled a few butt feathers there Cowboy. I didn't realize hogfan had a twin. I think they were both in love with Mitch. "

razorrod wrote on Sep 3, 2007 1:21 PM:

" wow!!! are such insults allowed on this sire Gonzo? I maybe shouldn't be posting in here if you guys are allowed to hurt my feelings like that.....lol what a joke....I was in love with the fact that we might have a passing game someday....lol that's gone...Casey showed me real savvy and accuracy back there saturday...lol casey=joke hda=joke david lee = joke "

CO-Hog wrote on Sep 3, 2007 5:54 PM:

" So, Cowboy makes an accusatory posting, which had nothing to do with anyting - other than hoping we win a bowl game. Gonzo makes a posting, that apparently clings to the past football year. Can we move on please. Look at Chiefrazor1 and I, we disagree but we maintain respect and mutual agreement in that we all root for th Hogs. "

CO-Hog wrote on Sep 4, 2007 1:02 PM:

" Thanks Gonzo. Hope we all have great things to say after Saturday. I'm naturally rooting for the Hogs, but am honestly a little nervous about facing Bama in Tuscaloosa. I'll have my fingernail file at my side all this week (biting my nails). "
