Razorback Defense Out Of Excuses

FAYETTEVILLE -- Matt Hewitt would hear none of it. Nor would Freddie Fairchild.

And defensive coordinator Reggie Herring? He brushed the question aside.

Sure, Arkansas' defense was dog tired in the late stages of its 42-29 loss against No. 21 Kentucky. But if you ask Hewitt, Fairchild, Herring and probably everyone else associated with the Razorbacks' defense, that was no excuse.

"We had them, we had them," said Hewitt, Arkansas' starting strong safety. "Just little mental breakdowns keep happening. Just little things we give up and we keep letting teams win easily."

While nothing really came easy for Kentucky's offense, the fourth quarter comeback made it look that way. After falling behind 29-21 following a Felix Jones free kick return for a touchdown, Kentucky began its march toward the improbable win.

With an effective running game from backup tailbacks Derrick Locke and Tony Dixon, mixed with the sharp passing of quarterback Andre Woodson, Kentucky was hitting on all cylinders in the fourth quarter.

And Arkansas defense was running on fumes for the second week in a row.

"The fourth quarter, we flat just weren't there," Herring said. "And that's not the sign of a good defense and that's not the sign of a good coach.

"We're all to blame for that."

No matter where the blame needs to go, Arkansas' defense isn't putting the fault on anyone other than itself. But even though the defense seemed to sputter at the end, there were some Razorbacks who felt they deserved a break.

"People are probably talking down to our defense and stuff," Arkansas fullback Peyton Hillis said. "But when you put them on the wrong side of the field, or you make too many dumb mistakes, you're going to screw up a lot. And when you have a great quarterback like they've got and there's six minutes left on the clock, it's almost meant for them to score.

"You just have to give it up to him and their team. They did a great job."

Still, no matter how good Woodson and the No. 21 Wildcats are, the Razorbacks' defense knows for the second game in a row, they let one slip away.

Now, the question is if they can recover from a second straight fourth-quarter collapse.

"We're a tough team," Fairchild said. "You see how we came out fighting after a loss.

"We're just going to keep coming out fighting."

" Reggie Herring earns over $330,000 a year and yet somehow he can't find time to condition his players well enough to endure 60 minutes of football. I guess he's too busy counting his money. "

" Ditto bubba72704!!! They are all about the money. I think that is obvious. So, I guess the Hog faithful will have to endure a heartbreaking mediocre season once again. Darn the bad luck!!! "THE AGONY OF DEFEAT" Hogs lose AGAIN!!! "

" is anyone really suprised. the only ones that are in shock are the ones not yet posting on here. they are too busy trying to think of ways to not blame this early season debacle on HDN. That's you "lrhog" and you "dfwhogfan" and you "bighog" as to "swinehunt" as saw your post on the other side and again say welcome to the dark side. We need everyone like you on board to get the coaching xhange our fans, and players so desperatly deserve. "

" A team that doesn't get breaks has not prepared well enough to take advantage of the breaks it gets. There are no excuses for being out of shape and penalties that keep drives going for a team who has turned the ball over, but gets it back. IT'S CALLED LACK OF DISCIPLINE. WE HAVE LOTS OF UNDISCIPLINED PLAYERS BECAUSE OF THEIR LAZY UNTALLENTED COACHES. Next; how does a team make up for lousey play calling, poor game planning and dreaful clock management of its head coach and coaching minions ? Bottom line; we will be lucky to win a total of five games. "

" Where we gonna get that fifth win. I thought Miss. St. but they seem to get better every week. You can hammer Herring all you like but he seems to find a way eventually, unlike the offense, which never gets better. I cannot berate our players because I think they are trying as best they can. My goodness folks, many of us expected these results and we were hammered for belittling the team. I will admit, its worse than I thought it would be. I never expected the bad SEC teams to improve this much. We may not win an SEC game this season. Truth is, we are really bad with pretty good players. Houston didn't just recently become a bad HC. His scheme and play calling have been terrible all along. "

" I'm an HDN fan and I suppose an apologist. Have been all along. But yesterday was a big disappointment. I think the staff would call better plays if they had more confidence in the personnel. Which means we haven't recruited the personnel we need to compete at this level. Whether it's scheme or personnel, HDN carries the responsibility. Of course the defense could help a little more with a 4th quarter stop once in a while. "

" I never thought I would be taking this position. It seems it's time to find a new head coach. The right reverend Nutt has lost the congregation. Questionable integrity, D. Nutt created the wildcat offense??? Yeah sure he did. Good assistant coaches, but who to inspire top recruiting classes to sign up? Some great talent but too many missing pieces. "

" Razorrod...not to shocked to post, especially to any remarks you make. Have been unavailable to post which is why you have not heard from me yet. As for my thoughts, I have always been an H fan and will always be one but this one is on him and the other coaches. Either we run the Wildhog or not...figure it out because it is pretty hard for a qb to get into any kind of a rythem when you are callling plays like we are. Throw the ball more to Hillis over the middle as well as TE's which will help the wr's. Really surprised at how well they ran on us in second half. Too many stupid penalties. Just not good fball right now. Razzorod..sorry to disappoint you but I will never align with you about H and your thoughts about him. Sorry pal. "

razorrod wrote on Sep 25, 2007 3:25 PM:

" "dfw" never expected you to align. Old boy HDN has already sold you that lemon when you met him so you will continue trying to repair it no matter the cost. hey no biggie. hug until it hurts my man hug until it hurts. "
