LITTLE ROCK -- Reactions were mixed to a pregame flyover on Saturday, but opinions weren't lacking about the message sent by the banner criticizing Arkansas coach Houston Nutt.

The plane, towing a banner that read, "There's Nuttin' like being 0-2 in the SEC," flew over War Memorial Stadium two hours before kickoff and made several passes. Plenty of fingers pointed to the sky as the plane passed.

"Everybody's got their right to express their opinion, but Lord I would hate to be a player on the field in warmups and see that," said Terry Sharp of Little Rock.

Saturday's flyover comes on the heels of a group of Arkansas students wearing black shirts to express their displeasure with Nutt last week against North Texas in Fayetteville. Arkansas' Darren McFadden criticized the black shirts after that game, and several fans took exception to Saturday's banner.

"I'm kind of neutral when it comes to Nutt, but (the banner) is just distasteful to me," said Maumelle's Brian James. "I guess if that's what you're after, there's a lot of to do about it, but it's embarrassing."

Little Rock's Jamie Tritt said he thought the banner did describe Arkansas' early season woes, though he didn't necessarily dislike Nutt.

"We have lost the last two (SEC) games in the end of the fourth quarter," Tritt said. "So, it is fitting."

Special Group Of Burls Kids

The faces on Burls Kids lit up when they were announced during the second quarter. If the smiles seemed a little brighter than most, then it was with good reason.

Saturday's group of 20 youngsters didn't come from one Arkansas city, though they were sponsored by the Little Rock Razorback Club. Instead, they were all part of the CARTI Kids program and have either survived cancer or are currently undergoing treatment.

"They are a great bunch of kids," said Marty Burlsworth, executive director for The Brandon Burlsworth Foundation. "Some of them had to come a little later than others because it's hard for them to be out here for a long period of time."

Alison Melson, CARTI's vice president of communications, said the program contacted the Burlsworth Foundation a few years ago about bringing a group of children. While the group met at a hospital just a few blocks away from War Memorial Stadium, a special bus had to be used since some of the children are still undergoing treatment and couldn't walk.

The group sat in the south end zone after receiving autographs from several Razorbacks before the game.

"This is the first time the majority of them have been to a Razorback game," Melson said. "It's been a great experience for them, and the Burlsworth Foundation was very generous."

Auburn Game A Sellout

Next week's game against Auburn in Fayetteville was announced as a sellout before Saturday's game.

The Tigers enter the game 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference, and the game will also be televised on ESPN. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

Recruits On Hand

The Razorbacks played host to numerous prep recruits Saturday during the first of two home games in Little Rock this season.

Fourteen senior football recruits and five juniors attended the game against Tennessee-Chattanooga.

The Arkansas seniors were: Pulaski Academy wide receiver Cruz Williams, Camden Fairview quarterback Jim Youngblood and tailback De'Anthony Curtis, Central Arkansas Christian wide receiver/cornerback Joe Adams and quarterback Drew Stringfellow, Conway wide receiver/cornerback Isaiah Jackson, Sheridan's Byrce Lunday, Little Rock Catholic offensive lineman Michael St. Clair, Pulaski Oak Grove's Karlos Richardson, Marianna Lee tight end Larry Duvall, Newport tailback Nico Cox and Episcopal Collegiate defensive end Rogeric Govan.

The out-of-state recruits were cornerback David Wilkins from Lovejoy, Ga., and kicker Michael Schuster from Decatur, Ala.

The juniors were all from Arkansas and included Bryant wide receiver/safety Dijon Benton, Pulaski Academy wide receiver Neal Barlow, Lonoke wide receiver/cornerback Clarence Harris and Dewitt defensive lineman Justin Carney and fullback Justin Bigham.

" So...reactions were mixed BUT the ONLY opinions you published were "anti" the banner and/or "pro" OR "neutral" about Houston Nutt?? Gee, I'm stunned. YOU didn't have to walk 20 yards in any DIRECTION to get an opinion that is negative about Mr. Nutt, his staff, and the coaching job that has been done this season. Why didn't YOU? "

" razorrod...I agree with the first part of your statement but the second part really does not make much sense. They support him publicly (as do all players around the country with their coaches) because he is their head coach and that is what you do. It has nothing to do with worrying about the quick hook. But I do think they should of come out more fired up and I do think they were looking ahead (that one is on the head coach). It is frustrating though. My guess is we will see a different Hog team this saturday. If not, we are in trouble. "

" AUBURN WILL HAVE TO HAVE A BAD GAME AND WE WILL HAVE TO PLAY THE VERY BEST WE KNOW HOW TO HAVE A CHANCE. THAT IS ASKING A LOT FROM OUR PLAYERS. GETTING THE HOMER CALLS WILL HELP. WE SHOULD GET BEAT BY ABOUT 10 POINTS. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY ARE ABOUT THAT MUCH BETTER THAN US. MEDIA PEOPLE KNOW IT IS BETTER TO WALK FAR AROUND A SNAKE THAN RILE IT UP AND GET BIT. THEIR OPINION, WHATEVER IT IS, WILL NOT LIKELY DISAPOINT THE ADMINSTRATION. ARKANSAS HASN'T HAD EVEN 1 STROKE OF LUCK SO FAR THIS YEAR SO WE MAY WIN A GAME YET LIKE WE WON ALABAMA AND VANDY LAST YEAR. COULD THAT GAME BE AUBURN? "

" I can't imagine what is going thru the players minds at this time. Hearing all this rukus will cause a team to lose focus. These are just young men barely out of high school. This conspiricy to get Nutt fired will probaly work and yes it is a conspiricy by just a sellect group of people that are probaly not even a supporter or Razorback rooter. If they where then they would watch what they are saying. How can anyone that wants the Razorbacks to win speak such vile and viciousness that would up cause an adult to mess up on their own job. These few people that are causing all the commotion is doing what they set out to do and that is disrupt a Heisman year for MacFadden. And if truth be known these people are from another University and will stop at nothing short of seeing the Arkansas Razorbacks fall so they can promote another schools agenda. "

" I don’t believe that. Nutt, maybe is not the best coach that is coaching today, but he is far from the worst. I have seen years at the University where the players that came out of high school where just average at best but when they left they where better to great players. We are at the threshold of receiving players like McFadden and Jones every year. Along with the other players that Nutt seems to get that turn into something special. Nutt will probably leave after this year. But where do you think that will leave us when Nutt is gone and another coach will come in to start the process all over again. Maybe the University will pay to get the top coaches but so far they have showed they are not willing to so. I don’t think Long will be able to also because someone else is still holding the purse strings. I still think that nothing good is being accomplished by all this. It is causing disharmony and will wear on the minds of the players. That is just one of the reasons that play is not happening this year. Nutt is still coaching the same way that he has always coached. Without a good quarterback and running backs that run for a lot of yards. What worked last year is just not working the same way this year. I believe that it is this mental thing that is causing the disruption. "

" backer you are just plain alow, that or a Nutt relative. I can't celieve you are trying to blame the hogs poor performance this year on negative fans. And hey believe this. There are more than a few. Check out some other razorback site where things aren't as closely monitored as they are here. "
