CEDARVILLE -- By the time the game was a play old Friday, it was clear why Shiloh Christian is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
Following an unsuccessful onside kick by Cedarville -- the ball failed to travel 10 yards -- the Saints scored on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Blake Roberts to Jake Ryan. Roberts went on to throw six touchdowns -- four to Zann Jones -- and Shiloh won 42-18.
Due to a recent lightning strike, the scoreboard and play clock weren't working. But that had little effect on Shiloh (7-1, 5-0 3A-1 Conference), whose Spread offense required little time to gobble up yardage. The Saints drove for touchdowns on five of their first six possessions, and amassed 424 total yards.
"We don't practice with a play clock, so to us it was not a factor," said Roberts, who was 17-of-28 for 278 yards. "Our receivers did a good job of getting open. We threw a lot of negative-yardage passes that went for touchdowns. The credit goes to my linemen and my wide receivers for the numbers I got."
Despite the final score, the Pirates (4-4, 2-3) showed plenty of fight. They stopped Shiloh on downs on its second possession, then pulled within 7-6 when running back Mike Roberts caught a tipped pass and went 35 yards for a touchdown.
Roberts scored again on a 35-yard run early in the fourth quarter, as Cedarville wouldn't permit Shiloh to get the 35-point lead needed for a mercy rule.
"With the flu epidemic that hit us, this is the healthiest we've been in three weeks," Cedarville coach Mike Guthrie said. "On Tuesday we had 12 kids out (of practice), and we were just hoping to have enough kids to play. Our kids fought hard, and they showed me something tonight."
Blake Roberts' second passing touchdown, a 10-yarder to Jones, put Shiloh up 14-6 late in the first quarter. Cedarville converted three consecutive third downs, but Ryan intercepted Kyle Bailey at the Shiloh 11.
The Saints then drove 89 yards, scoring on a 30-yard pass from Roberts to Jones, and going up by two touchdowns. They made it a 28-6 halftime lead when Ryan scored on a 3-yard reception and then threw to Daniel Petrino for the 2-point conversion.
