Defining Moment

Attention Heisman Trophy voters: Get Darren McFadden back on your radar.

This shootout of a game was in doubt until McFadden clearly relaunched his campaign for college football's most-treasured award. South Carolina had just narrowed Arkansas' lead to 42-36.

The Razorbacks desperately needed to halt the momentum stirred up by the Ol' Ball Coach and Co.

And McFadden delivered.

After a touchback, McFadden lined up aside Arkansas quarterback Casey Dick in the shotgun. Dick handed off to McFadden, and the junior running back wasn't touched until being mobbed by his teammates after the 80-yard score-- a moment after flashing his biceps for ESPN2's cameras.

Rave Review

A 29-year-old Southeastern Conference record fell Saturday night in Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

McFadden rushed for a career-high 323 yards on 35 attempts, shattering Arkansas' school record, as well as the conference's all-time mark for rushing yards in a game. Vanderbilt's Frank Mordica held the record with his 321-yard performance in 1978 against Air Force.

The junior from Little Rock had 43 yards in the first quarter, 68 in the second, 80 in the third and 122 in the fourth.

McFadden's backfield mate, Felix Jones, didn't have too shabby a night himself. Jones rushed for 174 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns. McFadden had one rushing touchdown and also threw a touchdown, a 23-yarder to Robert Johnson.

What Was That?

Arkansas had the chance to tack on points near the end of the first half but didn't score after a bizarre sequence of plays.

The Hogs took their first timeout after Peyton Hillis' 5-yard run gave them a first down at the Arkansas 49 with 49 seconds left. After three straight running plays, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt could have called his final timeout with 23 seconds left and the ball at South Carolina's 43.

Instead, he waited 15 seconds to use that final timeout. With just eight seconds to work with, Dick threw an incompletion and McFadden's 20-yard run ended the half.

Did You Notice?

Sophomore tight end Ben Cleveland spent time in the north end zone during warmups, in his No. 86 jersey and shorts, chatting with Arkansas' wide receivers. Cleveland's absence from the sideline during last week's game against Florida International created quite a stir.

Injury Report

Starting free safety Kevin Woods dislocated his left shoulder in the second quarter but returned and played. He should play next Saturday at Tennessee.

Running Back

It was a record-setting night for McFadden in likely his final game in Fayetteville. He dealt out his usual punishment but also showed breakaway speed that's been missing lately.

Running Back

Arkansas' No. 2 back continues to show why he'd be the No. 1 at most schools. His Division I-high per carry average will only increase after Saturday night.

Rashaad Johnson (Taking Stock = Up)

Free Safety

The sophomore's playing time increased after the second quarter, when starting free safety Michael Grant went down with an injury. Johnson led the Razorbacks in tackles with 13. The 6-foot-1, 186-pounder made seven solo stops and six assisted tackles.

Secondary (Taking Stock = Even)

Mixed reviews come from the defensive backs' performance Saturday night. The Razorbacks had their moments. They broke up eight passes thrown by South Carolina's Blake Mitchell, led by Jamar Love's two. And they converged on the Gamecocks' receivers and running backs all evening -- Johnson, Matt Hewitt and Matterral Richardson combined for 31 tackles. They still, though, gave up big yardage at times. Mitchell finished with 364 yards through the air.

Felix Jones: The junior running back went off right tackle, shook a tackler, bolted between two more and raced 40 yards for a score.

Robert Johnson: The senior and former quarterback outjumped South Carolina's Carlos Thomas for a 23-yard touchdown pass from McFadden, who fumbled a pitch but gathered it and calmly found Johnson.

Mitchell: The Gamecocks answered that score with a three-play drive capped by Mitchell's 18-yard touchdown to Dion Lecorn.

Mitchell: The Gamecocks closed to 42-36 as Mitchell went 6-of-7 for 41 yards on a drive Cory Boyd capped with a 1-yard score.

KEY DEFENSIVE BATTLE

South Carolina Third-Down Defense vs. Arkansas Third-Down Offense

Before Saturday night's contest, South Carolina seemed to relish third-down situations. The Gamecock defense stopped opponents on 72.8 percent of third-down conversions before Saturday, good for second in the Southeastern Conference behind Arkansas.

But the Gamecocks had no answer much of the evening for the Razorbacks on third downs. Arkansas converted 6-of-8 in the first half and 4-of-5 after halftime.

Arkansas' eight third-down plays in the first half went as follows:

* Casey Dick completed a play-action pass over the middle to tight end Andrew Davie for 11 yards on third-and-6.

* Dick connected with wideout Marcus Monk for a 4-yard touchdown on a quick pass to the left on third-and-goal.

* Davie hauled in another play-action pass from Dick for 16 yards on third-and-5.

* Dick overthrew several receivers on third-and-4.

* Lined up in the Race Horse, Darren McFadden handed off to Michael Smith for an 11-yard gain on third-and-5.

* A screen pass to Peyton Hillis for 6 yards fell short of the first down on third and 10.

* Lined up in the Wild Hog, McFadden burst through the right side of the line for a 26-yard gain on third-and-1.

* The half ended on McFadden's 20-yard draw play on third-and-12.

Here are the Razorbacks' five third-down plays in the second half:

* Felix Jones bruised five yards on third-and-2.

* A high snap went through the hands of Wild Hog quarterback McFadden's hands and through the end zone for a Gamecocks safety.

* Hillis plunged over the top of the line for 4 yards on third-and-1.

* Jones took a pitch and jaunted six yards on third-and-2.

* McFadden clinched the win with an 18-yard scamper on third-and-3.

KEY KICKING BATTLE

South Carolina Kicker Ryan Succop vs. Arkansas' Kickoff Returners

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier did his homework. He didn't want any part of Arkansas' explosive return duo of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. South Carolina kicked off six times, and its kicker Ryan Succop only booted a traditional kickoff twice. One of those ended up as a touchback, the other resulted in a 49-yard return by Jones.

Those other times? Succop popped a kickoff high into the air for Jones, who only returned it 16 yards. He dribbled a line drive kickoff down the middle of the field that McFadden returned only 16 yards.

As for the other two, Spurrier got gutsy. He attempted two onside kicks -- one successful, one not.
