FAYETTEVILLE -- Frank Broyles' last game at Reynolds Razorback Stadium as Arkansas' athletic director was a memorable one.

Broyles, who has been associated with Arkansas athletics for nearly 50 years, was honored Saturday at halftime in front of fans, former players and even his longtime ABC broadcasting colleague, Keith Jackson.

During the halftime ceremony, Broyles was presented with a pair of honorary plaques before it was announced that the stadium's field was being renamed in his honor as Frank Broyles Field.

"He's an old friend, longtime friend," said Jackson, who spoke during the ceremony over the public address system. "This is not necessarily a monument to a man, this is the result of a vision, and the result of the love and passion that he had."

From the late 1970s to the mid 80s, Broyles was ABC's top color commentator on college football telecasts with Jackson, which is where they established their friendship.

One of the reasons Broyles was so loved and successful at Arkansas was because of how good of a fundraiser he was, Jackson said.

"Frank could raise money, he's a fundraiser," Jackson said. "That's 75 percent of what an athletic director does, and it's important.

"You've got to have the passion, you've got to have the vision, you've got to have the belief that it'll work and he had all of that."

Siloam Springs' Brent Butler said the ceremony was very touching and something he'll never forget.

"I think I've got more of an appreciation for (Broyles) today than I've ever had for him before," Butler said. "Nobody will ever replace him, and as a Razorback fan, I'm just proud to say Frank Broyles was on our side for so many years."

Gamecocks Pay Tribute

South Carolina's football team paid tribute Saturday to the six South Carolina students who died in a beach house fire last weekend in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

In remembrance, the Gamecocks wore helmet decals that said "Forever To Thee" inside a black circle.

The "Forever To Thee" motto is a part of USC's alma mater.

"It was a terrible tragedy for our university and the families involved," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday. "It's a terrible tragedy any time a family has to bury one of their children."

The fire killed seven students, six from South Carolina and one from Clemson University, and left the beach house only as a charred frame with the stilts on which it stood.

Recruits At The Game

Arkansas hosted a handful of prep athletes on Saturday during the Razorbacks' game against South Carolina.

Among the senior football recruits included Camden Fairview tailback DeAnthony Curtis (5-foot-11, 211), Russellville offensive lineman Matt Hall (6-10, 329), Springdale Har-Ber defensive end Brooks Reimer (6-5, 225) and College Park, Ga., outside linebacker Edward Gosa (6-2, 190).

A few junior football recruits also attended the game, including Lonoke receiver Clarence Harris (6-3, 180) and Buffalo, Mo., defensive end Cody Rosier (6-4, 225).

There were also two basketball recruits at Saturday's game.

Andre Clark, a 6-10 forward from Genesis One Christian Academy in Mendenhall, Miss., was on an official visit while Rotnei Clarke, a 6-1 guard from Verdigris, Okla., was on an unofficial visit.

" Congratulations Coach Broyles. You have lead Arkansas to national promenence in the SEC and bigtime football. Quite an accomplish for a small college up in the Ozark mountains of a little state like Arkansas. Arkansas is playing the much larger enrollment SEC universities and doing very well. That's pretty good for a school that is 9th in SEC in size of number of students enrolled. We love you Coach Broyles!!! "

" Coach Broyles you are the GREATEST! He was a great football coach, a great fundraiser - just look at the facilities in the athletic department. Coach Broyles was the driving force that got Arkansas in the SEC. I am so honored that I know him personally. "

" Please HawgCowboy the University of Arkansas is not a small college up in the Ozark mountains, and the state of Arkansas is not a small state! "

" WestcoastHog, Arkansas is A SMALL STATE, where state populations in millions are: Arkansas 2.8M people (smallest of all of its neighbors!), Mississippi 3.0M people, Oklahoma 3.7M, Kentucky 4.3M, South Carolina 4.4M, Louisana 4.6M, Alabama 4.6M people, Tennessee 6.0M, Georgia 9.1M people, Florida 19.9M, and Texas 23.0M people living there. ARKANSAS IS A SMALL, LITTLE STATE when compared to our NEIGHBORING STATES...but we work hard and play hard!! Go Hogs! Hope! "

" Also Westcoast, there are EIGHT (8) SEC universities that have larger student enrollments than the student enrollment of the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS...6 SEC schools that are much, much larger! Some have several times the enrollment of Univ. of Arkansas. We just seem larger because how Coach Broyles put us on the map with upgrades in athletic facilities. Hogs! Hope! "
