FAYETTEVILLE -- Anyone who thinks Darren McFadden is out of the Heisman Trophy race, think again.

After several weeks of hearing he and his team were reeling off too many ordinary efforts, McFadden went from a quickly forgotten, once-Heisman frontrunner to a man who simply refuses to go down without a fight.

Against an almost helpless South Carolina defense, the junior tailback was simply at his best. On 34 carries, there was a Southeastern Conference and school record 323 yards rushing. One on pass attempt, there was a 22-yard touchdown toss to good pal Robert Johnson.

Simply put, McFadden was doing it all in the Razorbacks' 48-36 win against the Gamecocks.

If McFadden's not in the Heisman picture after this, then no one is.

"The numbers speak for themselves," McFadden said. "That's all I could say to (the voters)."

While McFadden shouldn't have a hard time convincing Heisman voters of giving him a much-deserved second chance, if they need any reassurance there's plenty of Arkansas players and coaches willing to vie for their teammate.

"I don't think many people in this world have blocked for a man like this, or had the opportunity to block for someone who did what he did tonight," Arkansas senior Robert Felton said. "I mean what he did tonight was phenomenal. Our backs were phenomenal, our offensive line was phenomenal. You just can't ask for any more."

After failing to reach the 100-yard plateau in two of the last three games, McFadden fans were asking for more, though. And the Heisman voters were paying attention, dropping him as far down as from first to completely out in some polls.

After Saturday, however, there's no denying McFadden will almost surely go right back up to the top.

"That's why he needs to be in the race," Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said. "That's why I'm surprised when coach Holtz or Mark May (on ESPN) say this or that. I mean I'm around him every day and being on ESPN will help you, when the whole world sees you.

"Darren is just so explosive and he changes the game. He's just the best, one of the best players in the country."

And against South Carolina, McFadden was at his best.
