Nutt's Future Remains In Limbo, Nothing Final

FAYETTEVILLE -- University of Arkansas officials have not made a decision on the future of embattled football coach Houston Nutt, refuting media reports that circulated throughout the state on Friday.

Several sources familiar with the situation said the university's top officials have not been informed by Nutt that he plans to leave the Razorbacks at the end of the season. A source close to the team said Nutt met with the players Friday evening and told them he had not told anyone he is leaving, and that if he were to leave, he would tell them first.

Jimmy Sexton, Nutt's agent, strongly denied reports claiming Nutt will coach the final two games of the regular season before leaving for another head coaching job.

"There is no truth to that -- nothing, nothing," Sexton told The Morning News on Friday afternoon. "There is no truth to that whatsoever."

Multiple reports appeared on television and on Internet message boards on Friday, claiming Nutt will not coach the Razorbacks next season. Several reports stated Nutt would not be fired, but rather will leave Arkansas for another head coaching job at another school.

UA Chancellor John White said Friday following a Board of Trustees meeting in Little Rock he has had no discussions with Nutt about him leaving at the end of the season.

When asked if he had heard the report that Nutt would likely become Baylor's next coach, White said, "I have not heard that."

Nutt's job security has been a hot topic all season, and the Razorbacks' disappointing 6-4 record -- including a 2-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference -- has only increased speculation about his future.

Arkansas faces Mississippi State (6-4, 3-3) at 1 p.m. today in a critical game in Little Rock's War Memorial Stadium. The game has major bowl implications, and it could also mark the final time that Nutt and Heisman Trophy candidate Darren McFadden take the field for the Razorbacks in Arkansas.

McFadden, Arkansas' all-time leading rusher, is expected to leave school after this season to be a top 10 pick in next year's NFL Draft.

White, meanwhile, expressed his support for Nutt following a news conference Thursday. White said he and Arkansas' outgoing athletic director Frank Broyles will evaluate the situation at the end of the season.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday that it would be "virtually impossible" at the moment for UA officials to make a decision on Nutt's future.

"It just depends on what happens," said the source, who is close to the situation. "It will be interesting to watch it kind of play out here, but I don't think anything at all has really been decided."

Nutt's contract runs through Dec. 31, 2012.

The media reports surfaced Friday afternoon after Arkansas' coaches and players had arrived in Little Rock for today's game.

Arkansas' players were aware of the reports about Nutt on Friday evening, a source said, and it quickly became the talk of the team. Nutt did not return calls to his cell phone, and Arkansas officials denied that any decision about Nutt's future has been made.

"It seems some media outlets chose to falsely legitimize baseless rumors today with unknown details from unnamed sources without first seeking the benefit of fact from the university," UA spokesperson Tysen Kendig said in a statement.

"The fact is, there has been no determination regarding the status of Houston Nutt nor would there be until the normal review process for coaches takes place after the season.

"The chancellor affirmed this very clearly, on the record, some 24 hours earlier, and nothing has changed in regard to the coach's status of the Razorback football team since that time. Reports to the contrary are misleading and irresponsible."

UA System President B. Alan Sugg said there was some discussion in the executive session of Friday's Board of Trustees meeting regarding which officials will have a say in the direction of Arkansas' football program.

Nutt was not discussed specifically, Sugg said.

"'Well, if there's any decision to be made, it would be a collective decision on the part of Frank Broyles and (incoming athletic director) Jeff Long and Dr. White," said Sugg, paraphrasing White.

Long, the former University of Pittsburgh athletic director, has already been hired to replace Broyles, 82, when he steps down at the end of the year.

Long is serving as an advisor to White in the meantime. It's uncertain how much influence Long will have in determining Nutt's future.

" Looks like Sexton is working us for more Money. He's working the rumor mill to get us a new coach and saving nutt to make more leaving us. We do need a new coach and I don't think Long would go against Sextons offerings. So get ready for a ride Sexton style. "

" OK, so Broyles, White and Long would make the decision to fire Nutt. Broyles would never vote to rid Arkansas of this man. Long, having to exist with Broyles for a few years yet, wouldn't dare go against King Broyles decision, and I doubt John White would make a decision by himself on how long to cut the grass along the edge of campus much less a big decision like ridding us of this demon. Dr. White, as with Long, knows better than to rock the boat. Our only chance is that Nutt will leave on his own and that won't happen unless he has another school willing to provide more than he is worth. COME ON BAYLOR. Anyone folding to those who scream open up your check book needs to consider sending Baylor a big donation to be earmarked, to be used only to secure Houston Nutt as HC at Baylor. I am serious, I would be onboard to donate money to Baylor to take Nutt off our hands. "

" Only at Arkansas can "officials" be in limbo on a 40-40 coach. I hope he wins the last two and DMac gets +300 yards each game. Then Nutt gets a job somwhere and the "affair" is over here and taken to a new location. "

" why do they torment us??? are they doing all this posturing just to keep the team's minds off of it?? does Frankenbroyles STILL have a say in this? l thought we were rid of that fossil. yeah, l hope we stomp State and RunDMC has a great game and improves his heisman chances. but we have GOT to Dump A Nutt at the end of this crummy season. " It's predicted here that GEORGIA will be big winner over KENTUCKY.....TENNESSEE will be a big winner over VANDERBILT.....LSU will trounce MISSISSIPPI. Why? Because this time of year, the Florida's, the LSU's, the Georgia's, and the Tennessee's whip the smaller schools without deep, deep 2nd team backups with 4-star talent. Arkansas, Mississippi, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Mississippi State are only as good as their FIRST TEAM PLAYERS of which many first teamers are now injured at this time of season. THE BIG SCHOOLS 2nd teams plug-ins can trounce the four little schools' 2nd team backups. We simply do not have the depth big schools do. That's the price we pay to be a proud member of the SEC no matter who is coach at Arkansas, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt......So with the two little schools playing each other score will be ARKANSAS ??,MISSISSIPPI STATE ??...The score can't be guessed in SMALLER TEAM GAMES. " They need to fire him right now....before kickoff would work just fine for me. would probably increase their chances of winning today. "

" Sounds like someone somewhere is saying the right things, Nutt is gone. Doubt May knows anything we don't which is that normally an idiot with his record after 10 years would be gone. I hope that the rumor is true. I can't see anyone on the hill with the guts to fire Nutt so I would guess Sexton has found someone to take him off our hands. This LEAK is probably just adjusting the money some way somewhere. "

" Hey Mustains mom wants her laywer to get the cell phone records of nutts calls and so do we now.. Maybe we can find the call to SExton and then to media that started the rumors. Why don't we take Loyde Carr next week and ask if he can bring our QB back.. "

" My god, more psycho babble from the same fans. Yea, it always Tennessee, wait, they barely beat Vandy and have been terrible the last few years. Come on, how about getting rid of Alabama's coach after they lost to Monroe. Ya, we have constantly been a terrible team, and Houston definitely didn't want Mustain, even though he recruited him as a junior and Mustain withdrew his commitment, ha. Last year we won the West, and I know we lost the last three games and that was terrible, but my god, when was Arkansas a year in year out national title contender. Hatfield(who is a great coach and man) played 17 top 25 teams while he was here and won 3. Nutt plays them week in and week out. The paper says Baylor, hmm, I doubt they would mention a good school b/c the paper and little Wally love the Hogs. How about our BB team, ha ha. "

" Mustains mom, who cares. He left on his own b/c of a silly email by a physical therapist that got to Nutts wife. Tebow gets death threats on his cell phone after losing to Auburn, and he just changes his number. Come on this site does nothing but take personal shots, and then is still talking about Mustain. All Springdale did was air it out play after play. That isn't an offensive genius. Malzham is in the right conference now, where you pass, pass, pass. You can't do that in the big conferences. Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee all pass and throw. USC is not going to run any kind of offense that Malzham runs. They have to run and pass. You have to have a little ball control to win the national title, and if you think it was Malzham that decided to run the ball last year, well I than he miraculously changed his offense. Nutt put Mike Cherry in the NFL, threw with Stoerner, and Jones was a freak, and unfortunately now we had a guy quit on us. Casey Dick originally was going to be red shirted, but they had to pull that b/c Johnson wasn't playing well. At least Johnson didn't cry and leave, and he received a ton of criticism. I don't understand Mustain's mom, what does she do? I mean UA wanted her son for the longest, not to run him off. Oh well, we won again. "
