Nutt's Last Stand?

LITTLE ROCK -- Houston Nutt looked like a man trying to save his job and defend himself from the rumors and media reports circulating on the Internet, airwaves and in his own locker room.

He was adamant that he wasn't going anywhere just yet. He scolded some in the media for being "foolish" and creating stories that weren't true.

And he spoke like a coach who gave each of his players a miniature baseball bat to emphasize that they must "bring the wood" -- which he did.

Nutt has a way of winning when his back is against the wall, or in this case on the hotseat. And he did it again Saturday in front of his hometown.

The Razorbacks managed to put aside the speculation surrounding their coach's future long enough to secure a bowl berth with a 45-31 win over Mississippi State in front of a crowd of 55,185 in War Memorial Stadium.

"I'll tell you what, it shows what we're about when we can overcome and handle all that's thrown out there," Nutt said. "And that's what I appreciate because there was total focus on football today."

There was no shortage of distractions for Arkansas (7-4, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) to stumble on in the days leading up to Saturday.

Players had to deal with the embarrassment from last week's lopsided loss at No. 19 Tennessee, which only intensified the talk that Nutt would be gone at the end of the season.

Making matters worse, star running back Felix Jones was nursing a deep thigh bruise that limited him to only one play against the Bulldogs (6-5, 3-4).

But none of that compared to the uncertainty that came in the 24 hours leading up to kickoff, as reports circulated on the Internet and on TV that the Nutt Era would soon come to an end.

"Right now, we wanted to win this one for him and try to get the pressure off him," Arkansas center Jonathan Luigs said.

Several sources familiar with the situation told The Morning News on Friday that no decision has been made regarding Nutt's future.

But even as Arkansas running back Darren McFadden played perhaps his final game in Little Rock, a report appeared on ESPN.com claiming that Nutt will not coach the Razorbacks next season.

"It wasn't true yesterday, and it's not true today. And it's not right to do that -- to make statements like that to your team -- unless you have a real source from either that athletic director of that school or me. And you don't," Nutt said, sounding like a man being cross-examined.

"So you make up things. It's not good business. I haven't talked to one athletic director except for (Arkansas' Frank) Broyles and Chancellor (John) White."

Jeff Long, who will replace Broyles as Arkansas' athletic director on Jan. 1, declined comment Saturday afternoon when he was approached by a reporter in the War Memorial Stadium press box.

Arkansas offensive tackle Robert Felton said Saturday's win was dedicated to Nutt, and several other players defended their coach and spoke about how they played for him.

They wanted to earn their seventh win and secure a bowl berth for their embattled coach, whose chances of finishing out his contract in 2012 seem to get smaller by the day.

"When you want him gone, that's kicking us (players) in the face. I can't believe anybody would say that or start any kind of rumors like that," Felton said. "Coach Nutt is a good man."

Not surprisingly, Nutt faced more questions in his postgame news conference about his future than McFadden's 138 yards of total offense or quarterback Casey Dick's career-high four touchdown passes.

Everything else seemed insignificant.

"All I want to do is coach this season. Again, we have an evaluation time at the end of each year with the athletic director, this time it will probably be with Jeff Long," Nutt said. "At that time, I wouldn't predict (what will happen). Stop predicting and stop making up rumors."

And as for college football analyst Mark May going on ESPN on Saturday to say that this is likely Nutt's final season with the Razorbacks?

"Unless he's talked to Jeff Long, I don't know how somebody can get on the air and make a statement like that and then use the incredible word 'my source,'" Nutt said. "Unbelievable."

" Read the headline or the first sentence..looks like as usual its this paper kicking the players in the face all year long, before this game, after the game..the same negative headlines, the same negative observations in print. "

" I just find this all so heartbreaking for the young men that are our Hogs and our state. The nastyness of those that live to destroy lives is beyond me. The only way to stop this is for Arkansas to beat the #1 team (LSU) this Friday and the juniors, including DMac, return as seniors to take this team to the greatness it has and to get a Cotton Bowl bid and win that. We haven't played the football I had hoped we would this year, but Nutt was not the whole problem. Monk being hurt was some of it. Not taking anything away from Dick, but if we had a player at the position that could have passesed for 200 yrds. a game and maybe even rushed for 50 too, that would have opened up a lot for the Hogs. So, I guess we will see how close of a family our Hogs are in the next few weeks. I think money will talk to the juniors and the family situations will go by the way side. But it would be a real show of power and values if these things were to all come to pass. Plus, it would be heroic if the junios stayed and the Hogs went on to win the national championship next year and DMac win the Heisman all behind Couch Mutt. But, That is the stuff movies are made of? Go Hogs, beat them Tigers! Houston, keep your chin up! "

" Hey, WE'RE NUMBER 38,, The polls show an average ranking based on 40 plus rankings that we are number 38,, Nutts up from 48, so we might beat our 10 year average of number 44. Go Hogs Go . LSU has averaged number 7 over that same time.. AUB 12th and ALB 18th only Ms and MS ST have lower. Thank God for Mississippi "

" ozarks, you said the biggest word in the english language, "IF" If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his butt when he hopps! THe reality of all this is simple, The Hogs have had a real challenge recruiting and playing against the elite of the SEC. They should have gone to the Big 12 or started their own conference. They can't compete against the big boys of the SEC. They may never be a BCS contender. But rest assured they are a pretender!!!! At least while they are under the lack of direction of the coaching staff that they have right now. "

" Interesting .... the EDITORS CHOOSE to post THREE - 3x - stories (non-stories) that Coach Nutt was to be fired or to quit at the end of season ... INSTEAD of stories about another Razorback victory & DMac's likely last game in Little Rock!!! Amazing how much hostility and anti-Univ. of Arkansas this Springdale paper demonstrates week after week after week. Regardless of my personal beliefs about Coach Nutt, there is a responsible time & place for such business decisions. During the season it's about supporting the kids & coaches. This paper DID NOT produce ONE (1x) witness - named UofA authority (nor has any other drive-by media) to validate their claim. In court that's called hearsay and is inadmissable! In Springdale & Washington DC it's misconstrued as a "fact" ... like DC this paper & it's EDITORS & writers demonstrate that factually they are devoid of moral integrity. Innuendos & gossip & rumors may be acceptable in the National Inquirer, but for a "mainline news organization" ???? Unacceptable! Time to undermine this paper similar to how it's undermining the University of Arkansas! "

" Speaking as one member of chicken farmer town, I don't care if the Huckster goes or stays. The damage was done at the end of last year. Look at the current Razorback roster and see how many of the stars will be here next year. The cupboard is going to be pretty bare. Don't you think the Huckster is thinking about all that? I think he's in a manuvering mode, which includes a big payout and a new school. He can then turn to the media and say "I left the Razorback with a winning record", the ever consumate spin doctor. As for the spiteful comment about Tulsa and it's pitiful conference, I don't remember anyone ever claiming that Conference USA was at the same talent level as the SEC. Wait, didn't that Conference USA doormat ULM just beat Alabama? Doesn't that league have the No. 1 and No. 2 rushers in the nation? Ah well, I'm just curious to see if Tulsa wins out and hosts the Liberty bowl. Do you think the Huckster would duck the Liberty Bowl in favor of the Weed Whacker Bowl? "

" Lay off the paper! All the local news (paper, TV, radio) all reported the same story. Where there is smoke, there must be fire! I am glad that the boys won Saturday and wish them the best against LSU. I also hope that DMAC gets a multi-million dollar contract....but all of this is in spite of the fact that the coaching staff is mediocre. Hopefully, the story is true and we get a good coach for next year. And no, not Gus...he looks happy where he is, with a good QB and a lot of wins! "

" Oh by the way ozarks, you referred to the Huckster as "Couch Mutt". Was that just a fat fingering slip up or a Freudian slip. I'm sorry about that ozarks, a lot of what we are saying is just a meaningless form of blowing off steam. The real stuff will happen about January 1. "

" Don't see how Nutt starting the leaving rumor would pump up any offer from Baylor, a school which I have heard is no longer really interested in Nutt. Singletary keeps coming up. My take is that White went media in midweek stating he felt terrible for poor Nutt and his family. Broyles we all assume feels the same way. Long, on the other hand, could start this rumor after White put him up to it. Long is untouchable right now. No real authority, not even on the payroll. It would benefit the adminstration because they really want Nutt gone but none of them want to do the firing themselves. They are letting everyone know that Nutt is available if anyone is interested. This is most likely felt to be necessary because it appears Baylor has backed out on Nutt. As long as our adminstration had Baylor showing real interest, they kept quiet. Now they see a real need for the rumor mill as it may help them shed this cancer without getting their hands dirty. "

" As a Texas Longhorn fan I was looking forward to the next couple of seasons facing a decent non-conference opponent in Arkansas to help our strength of schedule. With a new coach and new system to learn it would seem that 2008 won't help the SOS if Nutt's tenure is over. But, I won't be terribly unhappy to see him leave - he is a classless act. His upside-down Hook 'em and taunting of the kids who play college football is base behavior. It's one thing for fans to act that way. Opposing players acting that way is poor sportsmanship. Opposing coaches acting that way is immoral, poor leadership and inexcusable. I will be happy to see him leave, it is long overdue. But, I hope the Hogs pick a quality replacement so that by the time the 2009 matchup comes around it is a marquee game. "
