LSU Coach Mute On Vacant Michigan Job

FAYETTEVILLE -- LSU coach Les Miles didn't want to talk about jobs Monday afternoon. In his opinion, he has a pretty good one right now.

The Tigers' third-year coach is in charge of the country's top-ranked team. He has an impressive assortment of talent at his fingertips, starting with mammoth defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. LSU already has clinched a spot in the SEC Championship Game in two weeks and, with two more wins, can assure itself of playing for the national title.

So when Miles answered to the ongoing speculation he will be Michigan's next coach, he vowed it won't distract his team this week as it prepares for the regular season finale against Arkansas.

"Nothing is going to sabotage (Friday's) game," Miles said. "That game is going to be played as well as we can play it. Our opponent will play well and we will play well. I like our matchup. I like that it's in our stadium. I like that it's on Friday. There's no sabotage."

In case you hadn't heard, Miles is widely considered the target of Michigan's coaching search after long-time coach Lloyd Carr announced his retirement Monday. Miles, a Michigan alum, spent a big chunk of his weekly press conference trying to deflect the talk.

He said LSU already has enough on its mind during a topsy-turvy season in which several national championship hopefuls have fallen by the wayside because of shocking upsets.

"I don't want to talk about jobs," Miles said. "I don't care about jobs. I don't want to involve myself in that thought process. It's counter-productive to preparation. I don't care about it."

LSU doesn't need any distractions, either. There's enough at stake.

The Tigers are talented, but showed they're not immune to upsets in mid-October. LSU was No. 1 when quarterback Andre' Woodson led the Wildcats to a 43-37, triple overtime win in Lexington, Ky., knocking the Tigers out of the title hunt. Or so it seemed.

But LSU has reclaimed the top spot behind its own propensity to survive nail-biting finishes. The Tigers' last-second touchdown pass that beat Auburn 30-24 in late October was unbelievable. The late turnover and score in the 41-34 win at Alabama two weeks later was equally remarkable.

The Tigers know they'll have to make similar plays against Arkansas.

"This is not just show up, this is play for something very important and we look forward to it," Miles said. "The (Golden) Boot has added significance to us. We've won it the last (four) times. But I promise you this victory sets up the next two games that we play. There's nothing that we'll go by. Our preparation for Arkansas will be very sincere. I promise you that we'll play well."

LSU's last loss to Arkansas came in War Memorial Stadium in 2002, when former quarterback Matt Jones delivered the "Miracle on Markham." The Tigers have won four straight and are favored again in Baton Rouge, where the Razorbacks haven't won since 1993.

But coach Houston Nutt said Arkansas would love to end that streak and throw another wrench into the national title picture.

"With them being rated No. 1 that's the first highlight on every show -- LSU," Nutt said Sunday. "They're going to show what they did. The opponent happens to be the University of Arkansas this week. Let's do everything to get ready in a very short week. Play the best ballgame we can and see what happens."

LSU safety Craig Steltz said the Razorbacks should expect the same from the Tigers.

Steltz is part of an impressive senior class -- which also includes Dorsey, running back Jacob Hester and quarterback Matt Flynn -- that will be honored before Friday's game in Tiger Stadium. The veterans have been integral parts of Miles' three seasons with the Tigers. LSU is 31-5 the past three seasons, which includes a 19-4 mark in the SEC.

But the Tigers don't have an SEC title or national championship during that stretch. So trying to avoid a late-season crash is plenty of reason to tune out the Miles to Michigan talk.

"It keeps you on your toes," Steltz said about the upsets this season. "It makes you focus each week. You know that if you don't prepare each week and focus each week you're going to get upset. ... Coach Miles does a great job of keeping us focused, knowing that we're going to get everybody's best game. If we don't return the favor, we'll get upset."

Miles said the overwhelming talk of his job status could affect many, but "not this team."

Instead, he said all its energy will be devoted to taking the next step to a title Friday.

"I promise you this: What I'm doing is what you should do. Let it rest," Miles said about Michigan talk. "I'm playing football for LSU. I'm preparing for Arkansas. I'm preparing for the next game and the next game after that."

" For all those "knowledgeable" posters with impeccable "sources" the price for Nutt's buy-out is NOT a mere $1M as noted by one poster a few weeks ago. Quote: "if the UA fires Nutt, he stands to make more than $ 4. 5 million" per the ADG and UofA. So "rzrd" that's why I consistently have requested folks send in those checks. Obviously the Foundation doesn't have the current funds to pay for Nutt & his assistants buyout on the heals of Stan Heath's (which is ongoing), particularly with Nolan Richardson's buyout having depleted funds. Any retort that I'm simply singing the same song is (1) short-sighted regarding the big business nature of running an SEC level athletic dept. and (2) a ploy to avoid personal responsibility for said program. "Fans" in name only sing loud on the internet about "their" schools problems --- while Fans in reality take action and get involved in a more meaningful way than JUST opening their mouths to expend hot air. Enough "air", send $$$. I agree it's time for Coach Nutt to be retired, let's do something about it beyond blowing on the internet & waving silly banners behind airplanes. "

" Nice article today on D-Mac by Wally Hall in the ADG. Showed genuine reporting skills ... took the time & effort to dig up FACTS, comparing D-Macs number from 2006 to 2007, establishing solid evidence that Darren has improved - and thus is the Best D1A football player in the nation. Appreciate reporters who actually work at their craft vs. those lazy ones whinning about "someone didn't speak to me on an elevator" or other non-stories posted by AA and ilk. "

" Following the LSU game Friday, it'd be a good time for the Razorback Athletic Dept. to announce the buyout - otherwise there is a good chance we'll be competing with Texas A&M, Nebraska and LSU (if Miles goes to Miiiichiiiigan). Of course, Baylor has already got the jump on us, but we can probably out-pay the Baptist this time. "

razorrod wrote on Nov 20, 2007 8:21 AM:

" Yes they do have the funds for a buyout and you are being naive if you think they do not. Once again "bighog" when they announce the buyout I will resume sending contributions to the razorback foundation. "

BigHog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 8:24 AM:

" NO they do NOT have the necessary funds for buyout of both Nutt and Assistant Coaches ... due to business commitments, some funds are already committed! "

BigHog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 8:26 AM:

" Additionally - big bucks will be required to attract a top tier coach!!! rzrd why do you even follow the Hogs if you're not a willing participant ... the kids are paying a price, so should we if we're Fans. "

" Also, did you notice that A.Abrams ranked Hawaii (with NO WINS over a Top 25 team) at #9 ahead of Florida, Oklahoma, USC??? And why does this guy stay employed as a reporter??? Obviously knows little to nothing about football! At least pull his AP Poll voting credentials "

razorrod wrote on Nov 20, 2007 9:22 AM:

" "bighog" Obviously in my opinion Hawaii should be ranked no higher then 18th or 19th. There are alot of sportswriters that don't watch all the teams and games and don't even look at strength of schedule when making out there ballots. Even in the coaches poll most a lot of times it's not even the head coach filling them out. The polls will always be somewhat goofy. But on another note. Do you know how much money is currently in the razorback foundation. I couldn't give an exact number, but I am fairly certain of the ballpark number. And it's in the ball park of being more than the entire estimated worth of the pittsburgh pirates baseball team. "

hawgballer wrote on Nov 20, 2007 10:20 AM:

" With the way you're talking and how poor Arkansas is "Bighog", why don't you go ahead and start the Buyout Foundatin for HDN.. Maybe within another 10 years we will have enough money to finally buy him out.. "

BigHog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 10:50 AM:

" Pittsburgh has a baseball team worth something? Who knew! "

TxRzrbak wrote on Nov 20, 2007 3:46 PM:

" BigHog- this statement is a big hypothenical"if"..but if the Foundation and school doesn't have enough resources on hand, I'm certain they have enough equity in capital improvements to get guaranteed loans to ensure that "a move in a better direction" is achieved" by the buyout of the current staff and the hiring of a new one. And don't preach to me about donating and giving...I do each year but I can dang sure stop if something is not done by 12/31/07 about the current situation. I'll increase my contributions very nicely if they do what's right, but the ball is in the Athletic Depts. court so to speak. "

Bighog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 5:22 PM:

" Guys it just don't work that way .... the Foundation will fund any contract buyout, the U of A doesn't fund such items. Remember, the School DOES NOT FUND the Athletic Programs, as NO tax dollars are applied in this area save the coaches "base salary". So if change is desired, then we'll have to fund it just like we funded the stadium renovations, etc. "

HawgCowboy wrote on Nov 20, 2007 5:39 PM:

" PROOF: ?? No poster on here states how much money they contribute to the Razorback Foundation. They just say "we have lots of money" like it isn't already committed for athletic capital outlays and Heath's payouts. I cannot believe anyone on here gives more than $200 a year.....not even a drop in the bucket these inflated salary days. But oh BIGHOG, how they want to tell everyone how to spend the money that is up there in the Foundation. "

BigHog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 6:23 PM:

" Wonder how much we'll have to pay to get a "top tier" coach that will satisfy the "fire Nutt" crowd??? $3.5M per yr - $4M - $5M??? And there's the costs associated with the hiring process + the hiring of GOOD Assistant Coaches. Herring is a bargain at $350K per yr. And of course the new head coach will want to change the look of coaching attire, uniforms, etc. which also costs $$$. The "soft costs" associated with the change of any major college sport head coach is huge. So who pays for it??? The Foundation (e.g. The Razorback Foundation) coz the State of Arkansas and the Univ. of Arkansas as a state institution pays nothing, nada, zilch. Time to move ALL games to Fayetteville to increse ticket, concession, etc. revenues. Heck, most contributions come from NWArk vs. LR already. "

CO-Hog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 7:29 PM:

" And here is what the Razorback Foundation is currently getting for the money they are WASTING: 38-39 in SEC play, soon to be 38-40 0-5 vs. GA 0-3 vs. FL 3-6 vs. LSU (0-4 since '02, 0-5 Friday) 2-4 vs. Tenn 1-1 vs. Vandy (gust of wind) 2-3 vs. Kentucky 0-2 in SECCGs 0-2 vs. USC (120 scored on them) 2-5 in bowl games (0-3 vs. Big Ten) 72-48 overall with 19 of those wins over the likes of SEMO, Mizzou St., ULM, FIU, Troy, UT-Chat, etc ... and 21 SEC wins over the Mississippi Schools, S. Carolina and Vandy. "

" See Bighog is at it again. Might remind you folks that when the papers and media were blowing Frank's horn about his service to the U of A, the fact that he got the foundation started and how it was funded and that the school didn't spend state money on the department and on and on. Don't remember the amount in the fund but it was huge. Frank was getting all the credit for the way it was set up and I think he deserves that credit. You lambs that want to be fleeced again might want to ask yourself, if the fund was near dry, why did the assistants get the buyout packs and why would we intentially keep Nutt just past the 10 year mark so he could collect on the annuity when he really hasn't earned it. If we are spending this stupid when the fund is nearly dry, what does that tell any sane person about the folks in charge of the fund. Do you BIG RAZORBACK FANS want to keep sending those HUGE DONATIONS in to folks that blow your hard earned money like 3 year olds in a candy store? I do believe Frank & Co. abused the fund by giving assistants buyouts that appear to be nothing more than road blocks to firing Nutt, but close to dry, it isn't. "

" The Foundation if operated correctly has money managers on board at all times. That is 1 reason why we still have Nutt. The crowds and money kept rolling in even with Houston 50-50 Nutt messing over folks and coaching .500 ball. Money men don't change managers just because he is a loser if the money is still right. To the foundation, they have Nutt for much less than a great coach would cost and the great coach cannot bring a return on investment like less paid Nutt can. Our take from bowls, paying fans, donations and such are not likely to offset the costs associated with Nutt versus a real coach. If your intention is to operate the foundation and get the absolute most for your investment dollar, Nutt is a real find. The true fault here lies with the fans. They just keep on sending the money in and filling the stands with thristy/hungary bodies that spend money. At least on the surface, Houston Nutt was a money maker for Arkansas. We squall about the though SEC, but every year we share in about 8 bowl games even if we aren't in any of them. Today's Times Record had a breakdown on the bowl payouts to the SEC teams. "

CO-Hog wrote on Nov 20, 2007 11:02 PM:

" So the real question: Do you want to keep paying a LOSER for LOSING? "
