SPECIAL TO THE MORNING NEWS
SPRINGDALE -- Thanks to the Jones Center for Families, a new club has taken flight via way of battery-powered model airplanes.
Pat Squires, a native of Arlington, Texas, said he has been flying model airplanes his entire life. Squires was looking for a place to fly his aircraft while visiting family in Northwest Arkansas, when he came across the Jones Center.
Every Friday from 9-11 a.m. in the Jones Center basketball gym, Squires can be found flying his battery-powered planes and helicopters. In only a few meetings, the flying club has already drawn the interest of a few Springdale citizens, including James Brooks.
"I bought a model helicopter a few years ago, and couldn't get it to fly," Brooks said. "One day at the Jones Center I met Pat and he has since been teaching me how to fly it."
Because Squires spends most of his time away from Northwest Arkansas, he is looking for a few knowledgeable people to help assist aspiring model airplane pilots.
"Hopefully we can generate some more interest, and can attract more people who have experience in flying model planes, which would make it easier for beginners to learn," Squires said.
For beginners, Squires suggests the Cessna 210 Centurion model airplane, or the E-Flite Blade CX model helicopter. These particular models require very little assembly, and are battery operated, making for easy maintenance. Locally, they can be found at Extreme RC in Fayetteville, as well as Hobby Town U.S.A in Bentonville among other places.
These model aircraft can also be ordered online. Additional information regarding the flying club is available by e-mailing Squires at mikesdad70@yahoo.com or just stop by the Jones Center for Families any Friday.
