SPECIAL TO THE MORNING NEWS
SPRINGDALE -- Shiloh Christian has developed a habit of running into the same teams come playoff time.
For the second season in a row, the Saints will play Bauxite. And this time, the winner advances to the Class 3A state championship game. This comes two weeks after Shiloh beat Harding Academy, also for the second season in a row.
"There's good things and bad things about it," Shiloh coach Josh Floyd said. "I know that when you knock teams out, they've probably been thinking about it all season. I know Bauxite's been wanting to get back at us for a year now, so I don't necessarily like that."
Shiloh (11-1) went on the road and defeated Bauxite 35-21 in the quarterfinals last season before going on to win the school's fourth state championship. Now, the Saints are two wins away from winning their fifth, and this time, they get the Miners at home.
"Some people say (Shiloh) is not as good as they were last year, but I disagree," Bauxite coach Jon Watson said. "From what I've seen, they do what they want to do. They're that good."
While impressed with what he's seen from Shiloh, Watson is even more impressed with what he's seen from his own team.
"We're nowhere near the team we were last year," Watson said. "We are the most surprised coaching staff in the state because we sat in the office five weeks ago and all we could think is that we'd be glad to get this thing over with. But we've just picked it up a notch since then."
Still, the Miners (11-1) won their conference championship, boast an 11-1 record and are ranked No. 3 in 3A by Hooten's Arkansas Football. They are still just as potent as ever with their unique veer-option offense, and have demonstrated the ability to put lots of points on the board.
Floyd said he's watched Bauxite game film and has been impressed.
"We've got a big chore on our hands," Floyd said. "I don't think they're a whole lot different than they were last year. The thing Bauxite has done the past few years is they can throw out of (the veer-option). They get everyone sucked in on the run, then they can raise up and there will be guys wide open for the pass."
