FAYETTEVILLE - The media frenzy has died down, and the talk of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville coming to Arkansas isn't nearly as strong as it was Thursday night.

In other words, Friday was mostly quiet when it came to incoming Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long's search to find a new football coach. Today marks the sixth day of the search.

"Jeff will take the time necessary to secure a highly qualified head coach for our football team," Arkansas Chancellor John White said in an e-mail to The Morning News on Friday night. "He is keeping me fully informed, and I am pleased with his progress."

Reports surfaced Thursday night on the Internet and on television claiming that Tuberville was close to reaching an agreement to replace Houston Nutt as Arkansas' coach.

But multiple sources familiar with the situation said Thursday that Arkansas and Tuberville had not struck a deal. Friday, meanwhile, came and went without any major developments being made public.

"As far as I know, they're working hard," said Frank Broyles, who will step down as Arkansas' athletic director at the end of the year. "I don't have any information whatsoever (about) what they're doing."

Broyles flew to Atlanta on Friday to attend the festivities surrounding tonight's Southeastern Conference Championship Game between No. 5 LSU and No. 14 Tennessee.

Tuberville's travel plans were closely monitored, as well. He dodged reporters Friday afternoon after arriving at the Auburn airport from a one-day hunting trip in West Helena.

Meanwhile, Auburn officials gave a written offer for a two-year contract extension to Tuberville on Friday, The Huntsville Times reported.

The offer, according to the newspaper, would extend Tuberville's contract through Dec. 31, 2013, and includes a raise totaling $1.2 million.

A source close to Tuberville also told The Times that Tuberville has not had any discussions about an offer from Arkansas to replace Nutt.

Tuberville is still considered a candidate for the Arkansas job, but his $6 million buyout could pose a problem for Arkansas officials.

Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has also been mentioned as a strong candidate, though he has twice told reporters this week that he's not interested in leaving after one season in the NFL to coach the Razorbacks.

Tuberville and Kiffin have been perhaps the two coaches whose names have been linked most frequently to the Arkansas opening.

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has also been mentioned as a candidate. But Red Raiders' sports information director Chris Cook said Friday afternoon that Arkansas officials have not contacted Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers to seek permission to speak with Leach.

Arkansas interim coach Reggie Herring on Wednesday expressed interest in replacing Nutt on a full-time basis, and several other college coordinators could be in the mix for the job.

Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables is familiar with Long, who served as OU's senior associate athletic director before becoming the University of Pittsburgh's athletic director in 2003.

Long didn't rule out hiring a coordinator to replace Nutt during an impromptu news conference Wednesday night.

"Everybody wants to ask if it's going to be an existing head coach. Certainly a program at the University of Arkansas, we have interest and I have interest in head coaches that exist in programs," Long said. "There are certainly assistants and coordinators that have great experience and will be considered."

" Uh, let's ee - Reggie Herring ... hmm, not only no, well you know how the rest of that phrase goes. "

" Don't waste huge money on Tuberville, no to Leach, highly consider Kiffin, Pat Hill, Brian Kelly, Chris Petterson, Jim Grobe, and if you go assistant, get Gus, even if you throw Broyles into passing out mode. "

" Desparation is now setting in, as many candidates are second guessing the offer to become coach at Arkansas. Knowing that the group of [so-called fans] will disparage their family and call for their heads if they don't win the national championship in their first year. "

" amen, swinehunt. This is beginning to feel like the basketball search. (not that I have a problem with Coach Pelphrey). But I will be shocked if we get the "big name", with Michigan, Nebraska, and soon LSU and UCLA having openings, we will be stuck with leftovers. Hope it works out like it did with Pelphrey. Gus isn't ready yet. Speaking of Gus, why isn't anyone talking about us playing Tulsa in the Liberty Bowl??? All it takes is wins by Tulsa and Tennessee today and that probably will happen... I hope we beat them like a drum. "

" If we're going to hire a defensive coordinator for the head coach position why would we hire the guy who allowed LSU 48 points, Alabama 41 points, and Kentucky 42 points instead of the guy who held Arkansas to 7 points. "

CO-Hog wrote on Dec 1, 2007 9:05 AM:

" Amen blackhog. The only reason Herring wants the HC job at UA is because nobody else wants to hire him. He wasn't even mentioned as going to Ole Miss with the Nuttster, like his other former assistants. No to Herring, No to TT, No to Leach, Yes to Kiffin. "

" swinehunt, the very execellent thing about Arkansas fans, if you would admit the truth, is that they waited 9 years for Houston to perform, before the real complaining started. They put up with Houston's poor performance, overblown ego, poor character, and horrible mismanagement of the program for 9 years before blowing up. Now to the present: Any coach really looking at Arkansas knows that Arkansas fans are way above average in putting up with garbage at the HC position. He would realize that if he was a decent coach, he would be respected and appreciated. If he truly is afraid of these great Arkansas fans, then is absolutely not the coach for us. A great coach might wonder if the fan base at Arkansas cares enough to warrant a championship program the way they set on their hands and allow the program to die on the vine. "

" If we get a new coach who runs a more wide open (but balanced) offense and man I hope we do just that, we are going to need a solid defensive coordinator. The trend in college these days is to score a lot of points but give up a lot of points. That doesn't have to be the case. Personally, I think Reggie is a good defensive coordinator. He had a little less to work with this season, particularly in the secondary. He warned us of that at the beginning of the season. Also, I think given a chance he could come up with some good defensive coaches. I would love to see who he would go after for a secondary coach. I am not sure he is the kind of personality I would want to accompany me on a camping trip for a week. But, defensive coaches are supposed to be tough, in your face dudes. I'll take him and Kiffin. "

" Miles going nowhere per reports on espn. Honestly, this may take a while for it to all fall in place until bowl games are played because ad's will not let us talk to their staff. I hope it does not take long but I want us to get the right guy. No way on Leach! Glad Miles is staying because that is one less big program we have to worry about replacing a coach! "

" Tulsa got beat by a team that could get to the Tulsa QB and the fact that the Tulsa defense was not good all season. Two things Malzahn didn't catch on to through out the game. They started nearly every offensive series with the same half strech running play that only worked once all game and Smith, the Tulsa QB got nicked in the wrist and head and wasn't the same after that. In spite of how much hype Smith garnered throughout the season, he was never more than an average mid-major QB that tryed very hard and Malzahn put him on front street with his offensive scheme. The Tulsa players were mostly average to lower than average mid-major players that mostly excelled within the scheme on offense and defense. That comes from a group of coaches that can make chicken salad out of chicken feathers. Bighog7's boy, Houston Nutt, could make rotten hamburger out of prime rib. At least Tulsa got beat by a better team. Tulsa got beat only once this year by a team of lessor or equal talent while Arkansas managed that 4 times. You folks still wetting the bed over your beloved Nutt need to find the Ole Miss network. "

" I don't think we're going to get any of the coaches we've been hearing the most about. I don't want Leach, Kiffin probably isn't even interested and Tubby is just milking Auburn. Shoot, Nutt beat Tubby numerous times and he's kind of dull. I don't want Butch Davis, the only coach of the Miami Hurricanes to NOT win a national title. I bet we wind up with Bill Cower or Skip Holtz. Reggie won't even get a sniff. "
