FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas coach John Pelphrey suspended senior Sonny Weems for Saturday’s 62-51 victory over Oral Roberts because of a “violation of team rules.” His status for the Hogs’ game Monday night against Missouri State has yet to be determined, Pelphrey said.
Weems, Arkansas’ third-leading scorer at 10.5 points per game, wasn’t in Bud Walton Arena on Saturday, and Pelphrey didn’t get into particulars after the contest. Before the game, however, Pelphrey said on ARSN’s pre-game show that Weems had to “do the things we expect of him and get his academics in order.”
“There’s a few things he needs to focus on and do a better job with,” Pelphrey said. “And we’re hoping he does. ... I’m not going to get in to all of that (any further).”
When asked what Weems had to do in order to become eligible for Monday’s game, Pelphrey responded, “he has to please the head coach.”
Weems’ suspension is the latest in a string of penalties Pelphrey has handed down this season for violating team rules. Weems, Patrick Beverley, Marcus Britt and Stefan Welsh were suspended for Arkansas’ first exhibition game in Cancun. Michael Washington was suspended for Arkansas’ first official practice and the Red-White Game. Gary Ervin and Beverley were also suspended for the Red-White Game.
Arkansas senior Darian Townes, though evasive, said Weems’ suspension did rattle the Razorbacks a bit.
“I’m not going to really talk about it,” Townes said. “We were kind of down not having him.”
Pelphrey didn’t seem pleased to have to address off-court issues.
“I don’t want to talk about that stuff too much more,” Pelphrey said. “... I think Arkansas deserves a disciplined basketball program.”
