The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department opened a 6-mile section of U.S. 412 East this week, east of the Arkansas 303 intersection.
The new portion of the road includes a bypass of Hindsville.
The road passes Arkansas 45 that runs north to Eureka Springs, around Hindsville and past the Arkansas 45 turnoff that runs to Fayetteville.
Only two lanes of the proposed four-lane, divided highway are open. The open lanes will eventually be the eastbound lanes. Crews are working on the westbound lanes.
The project, from the Washington County line to Arkansas 45 past Hindsville, is approximately $21.6 million worth of work, according to Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials.
Eventually, U.S. 412 is proposed to be an east-west artery across the northern section of Arkansas. The road will run from the Arkansas-Oklahoma line to the bootheel of Missouri. A U.S. 412 bypass north around Springdale is one of a four-part construction project on the highway.
The other U.S. 412 project areas are at Mountain Home and Paragould.
The total cost to upgrade U.S. 412 from the Missouri bootheel to Oklahoma into a four-lane, partial-access road (the type of road running from Springdale to Siloam Springs) was projected in 2001 to cost $800 million.
Adjusted for inflation, the cost is now about $1 billion, state highway officials said.
