Broyles Honored For His Contributions To College Football

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The College Football Awards Show might have been dominated by the players, but Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles didn't go home empty-handed Thursday night.

Broyles was recognized for his contributions to college football during the two-hour show and received an award for a lifetime of achievement and integrity. Broyles has been awarded, recognized and honored throughout his tenure as Arkansas as both a coach and athletic director, but said Thursday's award carried plenty of weight because it was for his hard work in college athletics.

"I was taught all my life rewards in life are in direct proportion to your contribution," Broyles said. "One thing that I tried to do as an assistant football coach and head football coach was contribute to all the things that I'm involved with such as the university, the athletic department, the players, the families.

"That's been my goal all the way through my career."

A video tribute to Broyles was shown during the awards ceremony, documenting his career with the Razorbacks. He was introduced by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who played for Broyles. Former president Bill Clinton also delivered a video message.

Broyles, who has been the central figure of Arkansas' athletic director for the past 50 years, will retired on December 31.

Jones called him "an inspiration" because of the things he has accomplished for the Razorbacks in "the fourth quarter" of life.

"Since he's been 65 years old, his energy has created a quarter of a billion dollars in improvement to the University of Arkansas athletic department," Jones said. "He showed all of us what he used to tell us on the football field: Anybody can play when they're feeling good, anybody can play when you're fresh. We all know when you get in the fourth quarter that you don't feel as good."

Broyles credited legendary coach Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd for instilling that mentality in him. Broyles played quarterback at Georgia Tech when Dodd was an assistant coach. He later became an assistant on Dodd's staff at Georgia Tech.

"He told me the values of what we could do with young people and the rewards that we get from seeing these young people be successful," said Broyles, who jogged up to the stage to receive the award. "That's been my goal. To be honored for this reason has a special, special place in my heart."

Taking it Home

Center Jonathan Luigs doesn't know how the Rimington Trophy is getting back to Arkansas. But when it does, Luigs knows where it's going -- in his parent's living room.

The Little Rock native found out he won the award earlier in the day and got his picture taken with the trophy. His parents couldn't join him in Orlando for the event, but he said they were thrilled when he called home before the show to fill them in on the news.

"It really hasn't sunk in yet," he said. "It's a tremendous honor, very humbling to receive it. I went and grabbed it (Thursday) and it just seems so surreal."

Behind the Scenes

Arkansas running back Felix Jones was named to the Walter Camp All-America team as a kick returner on Thursday. But, as usual, Jones took a quiet backseat to his more visible backfield mate, Darren McFadden, throughout the College Football Awards Show.

"That's how it is," Jones said. "Like I said from the beginning, I'm here to play football and have fun with it."

Like McFadden, Jones will consider declaring for the NFL Draft after the season. The junior said he hasn't thought about it yet, though.

"We've got so much going on right now," Jones said. "We have tests and finals. We've got the bowl game, things going on at school. There's a lot going on right now. ... A couple days after the bowl game I'll think about it.

" This was a GREAT TRIBUTE to Coach Frank Broyles. I am so proud to know him, and what a GREAT TRIBUTE that was made to him on the ESPN HOME DEPOT AWARDS. "

" And all you that put an ad in the paper should be ashamed of yourselves. This great man should have been given the courtesy to leave on his own conditions. If you wonder why it is hard to get a new coach, think about this. If you treat your most storied and honored coaches/administrators this poorly, who will want to come to Fayetteville in the future??? "

" The ESPN awards show was in effect an Arkansas Razorback show! Three Hog players on the Camp All America team, D'Mac the Camp player of the year and only the second player to win the Doak Walker two times and the tribute to F. Broyels. What a pity we have such lousey fans! shame! shame! shame! "

" Why not just let Reggie Herring run the H C job for a year and perhaps the fans will call a truce and get on the same page again-----anything to stop the bleeding. "

" Spray some WD-40 on his ailing hip. Buy him a high powered Scooter Chair. Build him a new coach's tower with an elevator, climate control and a nice easy chair for taking an afternoon nap. After all, he won a national championship, had teams in the top ten all the time and even won 23 straight. He hired great assistants and stayed out of their way. He will be unemployed on January 1. Come on Frank, if Tom Osborne can do it and Joe Pa can still do it, you can do it. " "

" swine, I agree with everything but Reggie. Hiring someone for 1 year sets back recruiting (then it also messes up recruiting next year too as many juniors are already deciding where to go). Nobody wants to go somewhere where the coach isn't going to be around, that's why FSU made the announcement about Jimbo Fisher. They were losing recruits because people were saying "Bowden may retire any day now". Reggie seems like a good, hard nosed guy, but I'm not sure the 3rd worst defense in PPG allowed in the SEC is head coach material. Tracy Rocker's defensive line was really the only highlight and he is gone now. We need someone fresh that everyone can respect. Someone like Muschamp, Venables, or Strong. "

" Let's get a good known assistant coach that could turn out to be a guy like Stoops, or Urban.. Maybe we can look at getting Chow since that was a name broyles liked... "

" Frank, thank you for everything you have accomplished at AR.I only wish that Long was consulting you on our next head coach. Alot of wisdom you could shed on the situation. bhanhawg - Agree with you totally on who we should be going after. All three assts are located in our recruiting areas. Frank offered Chow the moon 12 years ago to come to AR. We need a young energetic coach who can relate with todays recruits. "

" Thank you FB's for all that you have done for the this University because without your truly wonderful 50 years of awesome service we would not have the awesome programs and facilities that we have today. I am so glad to know that you will still be out there selling the university and raising money for us to continue to have some the best facilities in the country!! What a fantastic tribute last night and man it felt lke it was all Razorbacks for 2 hours. I got chills watching the tribute to FB as well as watching our guys get some awards. Jerry Jones had some great things to say too!!! Man, what a great night and for once it took my mind off of everything going on with the coaching search and was certainly refreshing to see!!!! "
