Coaching Search Drags On For Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas' search for a new football coach has had plenty of NFL flavor with Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino and Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin mentioned as candidates for the position.

But will a coach working in the professional ranks come back to school to replace Houston Nutt? Those chances looked dim Monday night.

Sources with knowledge of the situation said Petrino, who is in his first season with the Falcons, has informed Arkansas he is not interested in the position. Petrino's team played the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football.

In addition, ESPN.com reported on its "rumor central" page that Kiffin and Arkansas "were once thought to have a mutual interest in the school's coaching vacancy, but a source close to the coach says Kiffin isn't interested."

Neither coach could be reached for comment Monday and Arkansas will not comment on specific candidates.

If both have been wiped off the list, it likely means the Razorbacks will turn to a coordinator to fill the vacancy. The three expected to be in the mix are Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables and Arkansas interim coach Reggie Herring, who has severed the last three years as the Hogs' defensive coordinator.

Petrino, 46, had been a hot name around the state the past week despite Atlanta's 3-9 record entering Monday's game. A former Auburn assistant, Petrino was a success at Louisville from 2003-06 and transformed the program into a national championship contender.

Petrino also had been linked to the Michigan and Nebraska openings. He refuted reports in November, telling The Associated Press he planned to remain in the NFL.

"There's no question about that," he said. "I get asked the same question every day. I think I have answered it."

Kiffin also is in his first season with the Raiders (4-9), but spent several years on Pete Carroll's staff at Southern California. The 32-year-old was asked about the Arkansas job soon after Nutt's departure, but denied contact with the school.

Muschamp, 36, has never been a head coach, but sources close to the situation said he has spoken to Long about Arkansas' position and is interested in the job.

Muschamp was a finalist for the 2007 Broyles Award and has been on Tommy Tuberville's staff for two years. He played at Georgia and also worked on Nick Saban's staff at both LSU (2001-04) and with the Miami Dolphins (2005).

Venables has worked for Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops since 1999 and, before that, coached at Kansas State. The Sooners regularly sport one of the nation's top defenses and Venables has been regarded as a player's coach.

Both assistants have ties to Arkansas' new athletic director. Muschamp was at Eastern Kentucky when Long was athletic director. Long also was an associate athletic director at Oklahoma before being named Pittsburgh's AD.

Long's search is being aided by Chuck Neinas, the most renowned college athletics consultant. Chancellor John White said Long had a previous relationship with Neinas at Pittsburgh. Neinas has been working with Long since the search began on Nov. 26.

Arkansas has not put a timetable on the search, but would like a coach "sooner than later." The NCAA's recruiting calendar does slow at the end of the week. The contact period ends Friday and a dead period extends from Dec. 16 through Jan. 3.

Current players like quarterback Casey Dick said the Razorbacks are curious about who will lead the team in 2008. But Dick said the only thing they can do now is concentrate on preparing for the Cotton Bowl.

"We've got to keep going forward and let those guys up there worry about the decisions that they're making," he said last Saturday. "That's the kind of the decision (Long) has to make and we just have to come out here and worry about taking care of business every day."

" Man, I would love to have Petrino or Kiffin, but I just can’t see them coming to Arkansas. Fingers crossed though. But in the event they go with a DC/OC I’m definitely pulling for Muschamp. He has one of the top defenses in the SEC every year…and nationally as well (I think he’s 8th in the nation right now). He was the D/C for LSU the year they won the national title. Coached with Sabin in the NFL. Young and innovative; SEC experience and ties to recruiting. Get off the Gus Bus and jump on the MUS bus! Of course I wouldn’t be unhappy with Venables either. I suppose we will just all have to wait and see. "

" I agree Muschamp or Venables, either one would be a good fit. I like Gus too, but he needs to break in a few more years so he can hire good assistant coaches.. "

" And the saga goes on----the "haters" now coming to grips with reality, their dreams of landing a top flight head coach, demolished! They are harvesting what they sowed. Now it will be some assistant looking for a head coaches job [any school will do]. Read it and weep guys----- "

" The way I see it, Herring should get the HC job for a year or two, let the dust settle, negativity die it's slow death. If Reggie can do a good job, OK!If not, by then try again to hire a great established coach. Everyone knows the program is in "crash-mode" for several [or more] years. "

" Lets hope we get Muschamp. Maybe he will bring Gus as oc wouldn't that be great. We need a young Hungry coach wanting to make his mark on college football. HDN has left the team weakened with D-Mac ,Felix, Ect.. gone. The new coach will be lucky to finish above .500 next year. Isn't it funny that all the HDN lovers are haters of Gus. Guys practice what you preach. "

" swinehunt, no one can disagree that there was some negativity around the program this year. But, any intelligent person who might be considered as our next head coach should probably be able to extrapolate and understand why. Coach Nutt was not the most moral or ethical guy on the planet and it was communicated by us, the fans that our state and athletes deserve much more…bottom line. Now, he has resigned and it's time we move on in the interest of the program. Arkansas fans are no different, as far as expectations, than any other school in the SEC. If a potential coach decided that he didn't want to be our coach because he fears that he would be held accountable by the fans, then he shouldn't look to being a head coach to begin with. I hope we get a brilliant young up and coming coach to take us into the next decade and unite us in morality and victories. I will stand behind whoever gets the opportunity to coach the Razorbacks as I hope our program can unite against our foes, not each other! Go Hogs!!! "

" Malzahn was in Houston yesterday interviewing for the Univ. of Houston HC job. They have a bunch of candidates that they are looking at. It is going to be tough to hire a great coach at Hog Heaven when you have Michigan being turned down by Les and then being turned down by the Rutgers coach. Get that, you coach for Rutgers and you turn down the head coach at Michigan. Man have times changed. Hopefully this long drawn out process and the next few years of tough times will teach the fans to appreciate a winning coach if we can find one. "

" The best coordinator I see available right now has been mentioned, but he is not getting a lot of print. Norm Chow is the man for the head coaching job. The OC of the Tennessee Titans, he has coached three Heisman QBs in college -- Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, and Matt Leinart. He is tremendously successful with a great offensive mind. Plus, he could make an awesome hire right now for a DC. You know Chow was the OC at USC when Ed Orgeron was the DC, right? If he could hire Orgeron, maybe we could still have some hope of making a very good recruiting class for this year. "

" y'all will have to learn to tactfully hold a coach accountable. y'all will also have to learn to NOT hold his family accountable. currently nobody has any interest in enduring the same as the NUTT family has. y'all are great fans for the "team", but you have no respect for your coach, or their family. you are now going to get a young 'un and will need to support him as he grows and seasons, or he too, will fail. too many of you act like you are equal or superior to the coaches. if you're that good, you aught to be the coach...obviously the University is not interested in you, because you aren't near as good off your recliner and in the position. unfortunately for y'all, Arkansas is well known for it's support of the team...and it's lack of support for the coach, not a good name to have for yourself when you are seeking a new one. "

" The rarity of a perfect marriage between rabid fans and a head coach is a tenuous one. Hoosier, that was the most logical post that I have read in a long time. I am tired of the huggers bashing and not Razorbacks bashing the fans for the situation. Nutt outstayed his welcome by 2 full years and this should have been recognized by the administration. They wouldn't remove him and it left the fans in an interesting spot of having to pressure him to leave. We put the money up to build a fantastic facility, we want the same level of coaching as the facilities. It is near impossible to lure a big name coach away from any program these days. Look at Michigan as that example. I remember when Tressle was hired at Ohio State it was criticized. Carrol was USC's 2nd or 3rd choice. How many hog fans had heard of Les Miles before two seasons ago? Point is it is the administration's responsiblity to put forward the best candidate for the job. We have to trust that they are doing that. Look at the Pelphrey hire. Looks better to me now than when it happened, two or three years from now we will know the truth. I say give them time to find the right guy. "

" Arkansas does not need a top name coach.. The school has to build it's own legacy like Stoops at Oklahoma.. We need a coach that has integrity and class, not like Nutt at the ESPN awards not clapping his hands when they called Tebow the Hesiman winner.. "No Class!"... We need a coach that can represent the whole state of Arkansas as one..! "

hawgballer wrote on Dec 11, 2007 12:04 PM:

" It's time for you fans to move on... Nutt has left and will "never" return to Arkansas as HC. So please face reality and get on with your lives... We're all just talking about who can be the next coach.. So "Swinehunt" we don't need your negativity...! "

" Ok...lets GET THIS OVER WITH. I am at peace with Muschamp and frankly the more I look into his background get pretty excited. Coached at LSU and Auburn, was a saftey for Georgia. The guy clearly has SEC written all over him and has incredible ties in the SEC. We need to make the move and quickly. I just saw where Auburn aced the OC and are about to announce the guy from Troy as the new OC. Mind you, this is a team that averaged 30.3 points a game this year against us, Florida and Georgia. I think Auburn only avearge about 17 a game against the same three. What I am trying to say is that had we possibly made a decision on Muschamp already this may have been the guy he went after as his OC!!!!! Come on Long, we are clearly missing the boat here on this dangit!!! Poop or get off the dang pot I say!!! Also say Nix leaving SC to go to Ole Miss....good!!! We have always lit his defense up!!! "

rumblefish wrote on Dec 11, 2007 3:00 PM:

" As far as an OC goes, if Muschamp is hired, I hear the man he would most likely bring on is Derek Dooley. Dooley is the HC for La. Tech. Muschamp and Dooley worked together in LSU and Miami under Saban. "

longtimehogfan wrote on Dec 11, 2007 5:40 PM:

" Indeed ESPN News-web- is reporting ongoing discussions between Petrino's agent and the U of A 2-3 years, or more? under a great college coach will certainly help re-right the ship, I hope this deal goes through quickly "
