FAYETTEVILLE — Bobby Petrino picked a few familiar faces and several longtime assistants to round out his first football coaching staff at Arkansas.

Petrino’s staff consists of two former Razorbacks (Tim Horton and Kirk Botkin), one veteran Arkansas assistant (Bobby Allen) and a handful of coaches who have worked with Petrino in the past (Paul Petrino, Garrick McGee and Mike Summers).

Former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson was officially named Arkansas’ defensive coordinator on Friday, though his hire has been known for several days.

In fact, Petrino has had much of his staff in place for the past few days, but he filled out the remainder of it by hiring the last few positions.

Arkansas on Friday evening released the names of all the assistants on staff.

Former Louisville linebackers coach Reggie Johnson was hired to serve in the same role at Arkansas. Former Virginia Tech secondary coach Lorenzo Ward will coach the Razorbacks’ defensive backs.

And Petrino named Mark Robinson, a former football operations and coaching assistant at Texas A&M, as his director of football operations at Arkansas.

“These coaches and administrators have a wealth of experience at the highest level of collegiate athletics and in the professional ranks,” Petrino said in a statement released through the university. “I’m confident that they (will) work tirelessly as we mold our program, and that they will represent the Razorbacks in a first-class fashion.”

Petrino, who was at the Broyles Center on Friday, was unavailable for further comment. He hasn’t spoken with the local media since a Dec. 18 news conference.

Along with naming the remainder of his staff, Petrino defined the roles of several assistants who were hired last month.

Horton, who spent this past season as the running backs coach under former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt, will have an increased role for Petrino.

Horton will coach the tight ends and serve as the Razorbacks’ recruiting coordinator in addition to continuing to coach the running backs.

Meanwhile, Allen will shift from coaching Arkansas’ cornerbacks to coaching its defensive tackles. But he won’t be in charge of the entire defensive line.

Botkin, who was named to Arkansas’ All-Decade Team in the 1990s as a tight end, will coach the Razorbacks’ defensive ends.

He’ll also coach the special teams, which proved to be a particularly troubling area in Arkansas’ 38-7 loss to No. 7 Missouri in last Tuesday’s Cotton Bowl.

Allen said last week that the addition of himself and Horton will benefit the new coaching staff, especially with all the change going on next season.

“Coming into any new situation, there’s going to be questions that need to be asked and it’s always nice when there’s people that have been here. (The other coaches) can ask us,” Allen said. “That’s probably been the biggest thing, just information, being able to give them information.

“Secondly, as you get to know a new team, the players are at ease when there’s a couple of guys that they know that know their personalities.”

Allen and Horton are the only holdovers from Nutt’s previous staff. All of Petrino’s other assistants spent this past year coaching somewhere other than at Arkansas.

Paul Petrino, who was hired Dec. 15 as the Razorbacks’ offensive coordinator, was on his older brother’s staff with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. So was Summers.

Summers served as Louisville’s offensive line coach from 2003-06, then followed Petrino to the Falcons this past year. He’ll have the task of rebuilding an offensive line that will lose at least two starters in tackle Nate Garner and guard/tackle Robert Felton.

" Anyone awake out there this morning?? I figured I would see all kinds of comments about the new coaching staff this morning but all is quiet. Not sure if that is good or bad..ha! I for one think the staff that has been put together looks pretty good to me. First thing that jumped out was that we put ourselves in position to continue to recruit in Texas which is very key. I also was very excited about the new DBacks coach and the experience and recruiting he brings in. That guy has coached some talent over the years at VTech. Ellis Johnson brings with him that stingy tough minded defensive mentality that Miss St seemed to always have even though the talent may have not been as good as everyone else. Once our offense gets going along with his tough defenses we good be pretty darned good. Maybe Botkin can teach us how to play special teams and actually develop us a real punt returner. H was soooooo conservative in this area that it hurt us over the years. Find someone with speed and good hands and turn them lose!!!! Offensively it looks like a very good staff too!!! I am ready for the change and let the recruiting battles begin!!!! Happy New year to all and GO HOGS GO!!!! "

" We'll find out in about nine months. "

" Looks like he has hired a great staff but only time will tell. All I know is that it should be fine to see some more wide open offense next year. I hope we find a quarterback who can throw in this offense. I think we all saw what happens when we are one dimensional on New Years day. We should not have to worry about that next year. "

" It appears we have lost many posters in the past 2 months or they have changed posting names. I trust Petrino knows who he wants for assistants and got them. On another chat board, many of the posters are looking for 10 wins next year, a conference championship in 09 and a shot at the NC. I hope when this doesn't happen they won't be too unhappy. Good coaches that can also recruit are necessary for success but no matter how good these coaches are, they are getting a late start this year. This group of players range from average to not good at all with no proven QB, very little depth, no idea about a passing offense and are in a conference that has 6 or 7 teams with coaching staffs as good or better than ours. All these other staffs have had longer to jell than ours. If we can beat the gimmes and the Mississippis that will be 5 wins. Maybe we can rake up another win or two and go 6-6 to 7-5. Most folks felt that Houston might win 4 next year if he stayed. I hope we don't set this staff up for failure. "

" We will have to give the guy a full season before he has a chance to recruit. There are a lot of HDN's guys left. "

" 12247...agreed...with this staff I think there is that chance to squeeze out another win or two because of the fact that we will not be one deminsional anymore but it will take time. We will win some and lose some with recruiting this year but next year will be full steam ahead.

rlbhogfan....I really think that QB is already on the team at this time but did not play this year and I think you know who I am talking about. There are several reasons for this but it is 2008 and I am not going start throwing those things out there and get the pot stirred. It is time to move and and I think ND has the tools to be the guy next year. This is his style of offense. "
