FAYETTEVILLE - The wait is over.

Former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett has transferred to Arkansas and enrolled in classes, school officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Mallett's transfer has been expected for several days, and he has already moved into an on-campus dorm room. But there was a brief holdup that prevented his transfer from becoming official.

Arkansas associate athletic director Kevin Trainor confirmed Wednesday that Mallett has been admitted into the university.

Meanwhile, Arkansas compliance director Marvin Caston said the school has received an official transfer release form Michigan, clearing the way for Mallett to become a Razorback.

Both of Mallett's parents are from Arkansas, and he grew up hoping to someday play football for the Hogs. But former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt didn't make a strong push for the former five-star recruit from Texarkana, Texas.

New Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, however, made it a priority to get Mallett once it became apparent that the sophomore wasn't returning to Michigan.

Mallett visited Arkansas' campus and met with Petrino on Friday. He chose the Razorbacks after also considering transferring to UCLA, Texas A&M and Tennessee.

Petrino was unavailable for comment Wednesday because he was out recruiting.

The 6-foot-7, 252-pound Mallett must sit out the 2008 season because of NCAA transfer rules, but he will have three years of college eligibility remaining.

The addition of Mallett gives Petrino a big, strong-armed quarterback to base his pass-happy offense around in the future.

Mallett played 11 games as a true freshman at Michigan last season, and he took over as the starter when Chad Henne suffered a leg injury.

Mallett completed 61-of-141 passes for 892 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions in 2007.

But he asked for his release from Michigan because he didn't believe he fit new coach Rich Rodriguez's offensive system.

Arkansas is on it's way to the BCS and National Championship. Nathan Dick might want to consider transferring after this next season. Casey should not have the job for 2008. "

" Mallet is still growing...he is learning how to forgive his center who muffed the snap at least once a game leading to a dropped ball, he is learning to forgive his running backs for dropping hand offs, and he is learning to forgive his coaches for a lack of ongoing recruiting...with everything he has learned he should go pro soon. He is very generous to stay in college, and the Razorbacks are fortunate to get such a talented player. "

" I can't wait till he can play...oh how long have we waited for a good QB. Who was last GREAT QB at Arkansas...gee I can't remember it has been so long. I am though, getting concerned about coach not being warm and friendly, not that he is mean or anything but warmth can go a long way around here. Just saying hi every morning or asking how you are doing or the family is a good thing. Showing concern for those on your staff...the little people that get things done. Show them some respect and ask them how they are doing with true feelings. "

" Ponder this....might it be in the U of A's best interest to petition the NCAA on his behalf to see if they will waive the requirement to sit out a year? It has been done before under special circumstances and this certainly can be considered one. Your coach retires, your school brings in a coach that runs an offense featuring a running QB (which you are not) and the writing is on the wall that you will be forced out as the starter eventually. Might be worth a shot. If it were to go through....wow!!!!!! "

" Hey, all you Nutt haters and Monday morning quarterbacks. Why don't you go ahead and run Petrino off before the season starts so we won't have to listen to all that same stuff we had to put up with last year. "

" Hey, let's be patient with Ryan and don't get down if the center fumbles when giving him the ball or the running backs drop his hand offs, just keep recruiting him to stay at Arkansas, and things should be fine. Talk of Nutt haters has me worried... "
